Arnel’s story is a fascinating look at how fame and celebrity have transformed in our super-connected Youtube age. Like fellow Youtube sensation-turned-pop icon Justin Bieber, Arnel was catapulted to stardom after being “discovered” by sheer chance. Our film follows him through this uncharted world of democratized media, where a celebrity’s fame is fueled by viral hype and destroyed by short attention spans and fickle opinions…
The Runaways movie premieres nationwide in the US, March 20th- the same day The Twilight Saga: New Moon DVD is released. Now Twi-hards have another thing to obsess about- Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart star in a biopic of the first all-female rock band in the mid-70s, known as The Runaways who lived up to that tumultuous era in rock n’ roll. This Indie movie was first presented in Sundance on Janaury 2010 and was luckily picked up by Apparition for wider distribution.
This movie isn’t for the fainthearted Twilight fans nor is it for under 17 (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian) as this gets an R rating for sex, drugs, rock ’n’ roll — all of it under age. I don’t recommend young girls to watch this unless they can clearly take the good out of the bad from it.
Is Arnel Pineda leaving Journey? I am very surprised to learn that this kind of rumor has been circulating the internet for sometime now. People who end up on the site come from search engines using the keywords: “Arnel Pineda leaving journey.” There is no news about it at all here in the United States. I can only infer that this type of fabrication could only come from malicious reporters in the Philippines who want to sell their fictional story to anyone who would buy it.
In the photo above, you’ll see the inside back part of my Nikon F3 camera where the film is put in. The roller on the right side is where the film is attached and rolled. The left side where there is a big hole with the knob pulled up is where the film canister goes in.

Because I’m not into writing anniversary statements these days unlike before, I leave this repost of an entry from my former blog to commemorate the imposition of martial law 36 years ago:
Orapronobis as directed by Lino Brocka, is a film that tackles the awful human rights situation in the country during the Aquino administration.
While the portrayal of the Philippine condition won it critical acclaim abroad, the film never got shown in public theaters in the country at all.
An article (some parts have been left off for the purpose of brevity) from the circa 1980 alternative magazine MIDWEEK explains why:

Lina Brocka’s internationally acclaimed masterpiece has yet to be viewed by its virulent critics
excerpts from Jim Libiran’s speech that he gave after winning Le Pari de L’Avenir (The Youth Jury Prize) in Paris Cinema Festival:
“I come from a country where, for decades, people have been leaving for greener pastures. It’s heartbreaking, but we didn’t know that by doings so, we were slowly exporting love and care. Now we are exporting culture and arts. In front of me and behind me is a whole army of Filipino talents. And not only that, as you have experienced here in the Festival Paris Cinema, Filipinos can fill your movie houses. We are a potent, profitable force. Let us continue appreciating and supporting each others’ culture, and we will give you 81 million more moviegoers…. because through this recognition, through this award, THE FILIPINOS ARE INVISIBLE NO MORE.“
Jim Libiran’s short speech was translated by festival president/French Superstar Charlotte Rampling while he was wearing a black barong designed by his cousin Francis Libiran paired by stonewashed jeans and leather shoes. The Youth Jury Prize, Le Pari de L’Avenir (Bet for the Future); was given at the MK2 Cinema, Bibliotheque National Francois Mitterand, 13th arrondisement, Paris. Stephen Walker’s Young@Heart won BOTH Le Pari du Public/Metrobus and Le Pari du Jury in the full-length (long métrage) film competition.

Joaquin usually jokes around that I blogged more about Ploning than his short film, “Bulong”. Well for one thing, it would be good if he had a trailer so that people would at least “buzz” about it. Well, we don’t need it now. Now that “Bulong” has been screened in Cannes and has won in China, I’m sure there will more interest about it. So here’s some blog love for Bulong.
