A rebellion of the Filipino clergy against the Vatican almost triggerred the demise of the Roman Catholic Church in the Philipppines and the birth of an independent Filipino church. The story of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, otherwise known as the Philippine Independent Church, also known as the Aglipayan church, is intertwined with the war of independence against Spain and the subsequent war of resistance against the Americans. Gregorio Aglipay, a Catholic priest who was a very active participant in the Philippine revolution became the leading figure of the schismatic church.
