Recently I heard news that there is now a dress code when you want to attend a mass in a catholic church in the
Philippines right now. I was wondering what they are up to this time. The Catholic Church always surprises me when they making decision on rules and regulation especially when they say it was for the god of the people. Now I wonder why a dress code for people who wants to attend a mass. Is this a desperate measure coz young one now days wear spaghetti strap, tube dress, hanging blouse or sometimes miniskirt when attending mass. Or they envy other religion or catholic sect who is more formal when coming to church to attend mass. I see this act as a desperate measure coz the Catholic Church itself cannot discipline own followers mostly when it comes to dressing proper attire when attending mass. They always say god is everywhere so you can pray anywhere when you feel like to as so this is also apply to dressing want you want to attend a mass coz it’s not the dress or the place that matters. It’s how you pray to god that matters. The most precious thing of Catholicism teach me is you don’t have to wear fancy clothes and it doesn’t matter whether you pray or not as the bible say so but it’s always how you pray that matters. But now I see their ridiculous act again and again just as they always do when it comes to Philippine politics! Now tell me what is the role of the Philippine Catholic Church to our lives as its followers? Are they going to preach something about how we catholic wear our dress or what the government should or shouldn’t do in running the country or are they really to do something to save our soul from the grasp of the devil! Are they going to help us to find salvation or are they the one who would push us to seek the things we longing to see in other religion or in our own way! If there is really a god up there help us because we are all sinners down here even the one who is serving you or in front of you praying for everyone’s salvation! Shed light to their hearts and let them realize that it’s doesn’t matter how you dress but how you pray and how you live your life according to your teachings that is read on the bible. God bless……….

The Catholic Church has no other “sects”. The Church teaches that it does matter, and actually a matter of afterlife with Christ or in eternal fire, to pray. And how we pray is not limited to spiritual reverence but extends to physical gestures and attributes. In mass we encounter Christ Himself, His flesh and blood, we kneel, we bow our heads, we close our eyes in adoration, worship, and prayer, we receive Him…hopefully while not wearing what we wear going to the beach, or when we play basketball, or when we go to clubs, or what we wear when we go to bed but, out of reverence, wearing the most appropriate clothes that we can afford when we commune with the Lord.
And by appropriate we mean,
1Tim 2:9-10 In like manner women also in decent apparel: adorning themselves with modesty and sobriety, not with plaited hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly attire, But as it becometh women professing godliness, with good works.
This so-called new rule on “dress code” must not detract us from the central point that “prayer” and “meditation” is a personal encounter with God. For some, their relationship with God is a little bit formal that they would not feel right and would consider it irreverent if one is dressed in beach wear. We should respect that. But again, one’s relationship with his or her God might be different such that his or her God is indifferent to the attire. The issue of prescribing the “correct” or “appropriate” attire reveals really more about the comfort level of the Church heirarchy and leadership rather of God’s. For all we know, God does not care a whit about one’s attire. That you are in church is enough.
I believe that is not something new, it has always been encouraged.
And yes we should never judge people by what they wear. (Important thing to remember is that, the “dress code” appeals to the person himself in preparation to going to Church, as a guide to what is the appropriate attire and not merely a guideline that calls for judging somebody else’s attire.)
And yes, one might say, for all we know…but the fact that it is addressed on the scriptures, at least this, we are to know. The Old Testament and the New Testament have passages that refer to “attire” during worship. One of the most striking for me is, Exodus 3:5 “And he said: Come not nigh hither, put off the shoes from thy feet: for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.” It wasnt enough that he was already standing right before God but has to take his shoes off. Another passage is what I just posted from previous comment were decency in apparel is called for.
Also, Id be very careful not to downplay what it takes to be a Catholic, which is by the way i am sure is not your intention bongmontesa, but others might start to think that when you say, “That you are in Church is enough.”, they might think attendance in mass is all it takes to follow Christ.
There are many cases that one has no option but to wear a beach attire and that is fine. The main point of the “dress code” is to suggest what is appropriate. It is not a something like a “state law” where fines will be imposed for those who cannot abide. Again, the Church only suggests.
I can choose to follow it or not because yes, it is between me and my God, but its good that she cares enough to suggest what she knows is appropriate.
The last thing I want is to debate on the nature of God, belief, salvation, etc. But when I said that “For all we know, God does not care a whit about one’s attire. That you are in Church is enough”, I was engaging in speculation, in wondering: what if God is so generous, so loving, so understanding that, yes, even the “lowly” attendance in mass only or eve n the”loving thy neighbor only” without being part of an organized church, is all that is required. Who can really tell what the limits of God’s love and understanding are? Who can fathom His thoughts? Who can read His intentions?
Same here, i believe debate is always a lost cause. Sharing is whats important, and never without charity.
You are right about engaging in speculation because I also believe that everything about God is faith. It is never about any empirical data that can be quatified and subjected to physical assessment. There is absolutely no one who can fathom His thoughts. We are on the same page on that one.
However, as a Catholic, I believe, that He left us with a revelation that is entrusted to the “organized church” that we both are actually in. And the understanding of its members about this revelation is the responsibility of the Church. Be that as it may, suggestions like appropriate apparel, are not a prideful testimony of mastery over knowledge of God, but a motherly gesture of loving instruction that we may know what is appropriate, based on facts that are already known, i.e. Biblical passages, on worship and not on blind speculation of things that are still unknown.
The Bible is very clear about decency in clothings. Of course, while one may choose, especially those who have an option to be decently clothed but chose not too, to put the fate of their eternal soul on the speculation of God being merciful, I remain entrusting myself to what is already known and what can be seen as a factual information- that in the Bible decency is called for during worship, wihtout forgetting to include in prayers those who refused to follow and with a charitable effort to share what seems to be a restriction at first but in reality is a charitable act of the Mother Church.
On the subject of “”loving thy neighbor only’ without being part of an organized church”, i remain in respectful reflection- if it is possible that one can love thy neighbor only without being part of an organized church when an “organized church” is actually the mystical body of Christ that is made up of all Christians who apprently are our neighbor.

I’m having the impression that cutecpunkz have no grasp about the Church. I think there is a need for her (and for all those who have negative mind about “dress Code”) to understand what is proper and whar is improper. If you want to attend ther mass or any church service (this is not just a catholic issue) in spaghetti strap, tube dress, hanging blouse or sometimes miniskirt … you can do it, but think first! is it proper… I’m an adventist and we have a dress code too. I believe that its not proper to go to the swimming pool in gown. I think “dress Code” is common sence. … well, baka gusto lang ninyo magpakita ang hindi napansin nyo’ng katawan, you don’t have to do it in the church – sa kalye pwede ka maghubad.
the church failed to discipline its members? no… sa lakas ng immoralidad ng mga immature na tao na nagdebate tungkol dito – mahina ang mga simbahan dahil maliit lang kami. we are even running out of pastors ministers and priests dahil sa temptation ngayon. The churches are still on top…only some of its members wants to wear spaghetti strap, tube dress, hanging blouse or sometimes miniskirt that are pulling them down.
boooooooooooooo? what is this? she just want to wear spaghetti strap, tube dress, hanging blouse or sometimes miniskirt para mapansin… haaaaay buhay magreflect naman kayo mga ini.
Regarding the dress code in church or any where for that matter.
God has a reason for everything and also consequences for not following His word Galatians 6:6;7;8. A lax dress code shows a lack of respect.God dosen’t want men and women to dress alike or look alike if so why did he put a dress code into the Bible. He called it an abomination when women or men dress the way of the opposite sex Deut 22:5 If this is true the church of today is full of abomination.
As for dress the Bible tells us that women should wear dress that is Modest(Greek- orderly arrangement, proper, not boastful),Apparel(Grk-Appease,quiet,put down ,plain garment,a lowering letting down, dress, attire long flowwing down) I Timothy 2:9-10,I Peter 3:3.How long is long flowing down? Isa 47: 2,3.You see anything above the knee (the Thigh is showing yor nakedness thy shame shall be seen God will take vengeance.Don;t blame the church We are to preach doctrine II Timothy 4:2-4 Ultimately, the fruit that should be seen in the life of the true believer is obedience to God.Deut .22:5 is a moral law although it was commanded in the Old Testament,God does not agree somethings on the old testament but later He would hate them in the New Testament. These moral laws are still in effect and become much stronger for all. The Modesty of women dress is a moral law.I started to notice how sexy women where when I was only 12 years old and as a young turn to the church to help me with my addition only to find women in the churches dressing any why they like tight jeans short dresses,etc.. Women does not understand that men are stimulated by sight of a sexy women. .huff
Could I have the dress code “picture” suitable to display out side the church for catholics attending the Mass?
I need a dress code pictures suitable to display outside the church for catholics attending the mass.. Hope u can help me
I just experienced a non admittance in a catholic church in singapore coz of my dress.. im wearing a 3/4 pants and polo shirt… The minister told me im not allowed to enter the house of GOD!
maybe im wrong ,but how about those poor people who cant afford to buy a proper clothing to attend the mass???
what I know my clothing is not immoral, the priest him self is a totally GAY.. I think that is the most ridiculous thing ever than my attire . How to lead a catholic community if the leader is a sinner and unsure to his self!
What’s wrong if the church requires us to wear formal attire? If we go to a grandiose banquet with a very important guest then it is but normal for us to wear an attire befitting the dignity of the event. The Mass is the central act of Catholic worship, and there we meet our Lord sacramentally. By requiring us to wear formal dress, the church does not require that we wear the expensive ones. If you can’t afford it, you go to the ukay-ukay. That is not a problem for the church, for as long as you wear what is proper for the celebration. The problem with us today is that we take lightly the importance of the mass. Others go to church wearing spaghetti and other provocative dresses as if they are going to the disco.
The problem is not with the church, the problem is with hard headed Catholics like you!!!!!
In our chapel, a lot of churchgoers wear inappropriate clothes even shorts, flipflops. One lady even wore a very short maong jeans inside the chapel. I think that is a bit too much. Another thing that really annoys me about other churchgoers is when they come in late many times when the priest is already giving his sermon about the homily. That shows disrespect to the church organization you belong. Even some young people are texting or chatting while the mass is ongoing. So I just close my eyes so I won’t be distracted. Sorry, I just wnat to unload this. God Bless everyone.
i think the most appropriate and suitable word for that is not a “dresscode” it is…”dress accordingly”…it’s not about how brand new or signature ur dress is…and it’s not about how sinner the priest or the church goer is…for infact, we are all sinners…but it is how u show respect regardless of ur situation…for if we want to be respected…we should start it on our selves…Peace and God be with us….

If you follow the modern teaching of christianity, especially from USA, the moral decay will be the norm. Your daughters will be sleeping around (filthy). No dress code, you can go to church in swim suit literally. No respect to elders. No marriage is required. Proposing gay marriage and others. There is no Christian nation that value morality anymore. What the heck? Everybody goes to Heaven because Jesus (son of God) died for everybody’s sin. Even Hitler would go to Heaven because he was Christian and had Cross as his Nazi’s symbol.
