Every woman who claims to be a hopeless romantic would know Fitzwilliam Darcy, possibly one of the most romantic male characters in modern literature. In case you are not a hopeless romantic, then allow me to give you a little background reference about what the hell I’m talking about. Darcy is the leading man in Pride and Prejudice, the most popular novel of 18th century writer Jane Austen - possibly THE original chick lit author and predecessor of contemporary chick lit authors such as Helen Fielding (Bridget Jones’ Diary), Sophie Kinsella (Shopaholic series), Candace Bushnell (Sex and the City), and so many others.
Pride and Prejudice is the story of the love affair between Elizabeth Bennet, a rural, quite boorish girl, who is prejudiced against the silly landed gentry class with their mundane concerns with worldly things, and Fitzwilliam Darcy (or just Darcy), one of the landed gentry Elizabeth hates so much, owner of the Pemberley Estate as well as inflated pride that he thought that Elizabeth was beneath him. As it’s a love story, of course love found a way and they married and lived happily ever after.
Now, if you read the book, have you ever wondered how Jane Austen could vividly describe ultimate romantic moments between Elizabeth and Darcy like when Darcy pronounced his famous words to Elizabeth, “You must allow me to tell you how much ardently I admire and love you” when Jane Austen herself never had a lover and died a spinster? This line of thinking led contemporary author Sally Smith O’Rourke to hypothesize that perhaps, Fitzwilliam Darcy was a real man and Jane Austen’s secret lover.
