Sure, I still need my nitrate-fix, my transfat-ration, and my sugar-high from time to time. But I have been trying to eat healthier food lately. It’s not even about losing weight anymore. It’s about living a good quality of life. And with a ridiculous amount of longevity in my genes, I would probably live to a hundred and living healthily and happily is the only way to go about it.
Besides putting more fruits and vegetables into my diet, I’ve also been substituting white rice with its darker brother - the brown rice. Low-carb diets such as Atkins and the first phase of the South Beach Diet (or my version of it - the Tabing-Ilog Diet) prohibits eating any kind of rice and letting your lips touch any grain is the kiss of death. Yet it is only this generation which has been beset with obesity, heart problems, diabetes, and the like. So I deem it quite ludicrous, not to mention extremely sad not to include rice in a respectable Filipino meal. Just try eating adobo without rice and see if you don’t get into a fit of depression. It simply wouldn’t do to completely eliminate rice. That’s like taking the happiness away from eating.
