Lately, most of the attention has been centered on the ZTE National Broadband Network (NBN) project. This is understandable of course in view of the juicy detectails bared by Joey De Venecia on the alleged bribe try by Abalos, et al. Now, we understand why the NBN project, which is not needed in the first place, is grossly overpriced. Nakapag-advance na pala ang mga tsino. I will not be surprised if, in the end, PGMA would be discovered to be behind (or atleast gave her permission) the project. This is another impeachment in the offing. I would like however to bring attention to the twin of the NBN Project which is the DepEd’s Cyber-Ed Project. It is as costly and as a waste of money. In the first place, DepEd has not done any in-depth research on this project. When ask for any study that led to the creation of said policy, DepEd officials have nothing to show. This fact alone shows that the project was not conceived primarily to arrest the deterioration of the state of education. Secondly, we all know that the poor state of education in our country can be solved by hiring better teachers, by training teachers already inside the system, by procuring error-free textbooks, by fine-tuning the management and governance of the Department and by increasing public investment in education. One could not be faulted, in the light of what has been stated above, to make the conclusion that the Cyber-Ed Project is nothing but a “fund-raising” activity like the NBN Project.
