As a veteran, ousted House Speaker Jose De Venecia shielded Arroyo in every crisis that hounded her administration. Alas, the erstwhile speaker should have known that his and the President’s was a doomed affair from the start. For as Conrado De Quiros writes, there is no honor among thieves.

I didn’t follow yesterday’s long affair, opting to read everything about it in today’s papers. So I breezed my way through half of Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment as JDV made an impassioned albeit hypocritical and belated speech against President Arroyo.

By the time 174 House members voted “yes” to declare the speakership vacant, I was already sound asleep. Only upon waking up did I learn of the change in leadership. De Venecia was ousted. Davao City Rep. Prospero Nograles is the new House Speaker.
