As a parent, I urge fellow Filipino parents to be critical about what our impressionable children get out of political ads on television, particularly catchy jingles.  The “nakaligo ka na ba sa dagat ng basura” jingle of Manny Villar is a case in point.  I am of the opinion that half-truths are being spun to improve Manny Villar’s image and mass appeal.  The risk is too great to just ignore this, so the results of the coming national elections cannot be left to chance.  We should be wary about politicians/businessmen/people who have no qualms using less-than-ethical campaign tactics to gain the trust of Filipinos.  I believe that the Philippines and the Filipinos is heading for a big disappointment and further erosion of political institutions and trust in the Filipino, his capability and the Philippines in general if we allow Manny Villar to become President.

From the United States to Zimbabwe to Indonesia to the Philippines, CNN acknowledges ordinary people with extraordinary impact in its search for this year’s “Hero of the year.” Filipino Efren Peñaflorida, 28 is among the Top 10 contenders vying for the special recognition.

Efren has been making a huge difference in the lives of street kids in Manila, Philippines for the last 12 years. “Peñaflorida and his team of teen volunteers have taught basic reading and writing to children living on the streets. Their main tool: A pushcart classroom.” What he has accomplished in his young age giving back is truly remarkable if not indeed heroic.

This is sort of a last-minute plea to all readers! I just received the email from my sis in the UK and I’ve never heard of CNN’s ongoing search. To think that it started in early February! Goes to show, I am not a CNN follower.

And it’s history, today was the record-breaking Longest Total Solar Eclipse ever experienced by the Human race – 6 minutes and 39 seconds total at its maximum point.

Most only experienced a partial eclipse like us in the Philippines, but regardless, it was still an experience we will treasure and pass on to the next generation (and those who missed it).

Here’s the report of the solar eclipse, coupled with photos (locally) and video coverage (India, China, Japan).

I’m still quite sad over Karla Garcia’s short lived stint in So You Think You Can Dance and promised myself will stop watching the rest of the show this season. So I head over to my least liked reality talent show, America’s Got Talent (AGT) just to see what they have been showing.

Watching “America’s Got Talent” turned out to be a cheer me up for me. Oh my, watching and hearing 14 year old Thia Megia sing out “I am Changing” by Jennifer Holiday was unreal. But there she was, confident, beautiful and powerful! Seeing is believing! I have been scouring her and people have already compared her to Youtube sensation Charice.

Yes, she is of Filipino descent, born in Redwood City, California in 1995. Her long full name again gave her “filipino-ness,” Thialorei Lising Megia. :-) (Any relations to Filipino comedian Gary Lising?)

Watch her audition video on America’s Got talent where the crowd goes wild for her, leaving all three judges wowed and awed. Her mom is also shown in the vid:

Something to smile about! A Filipino-American dancer Karla Garcia from Oxon, MD is part of this season’s So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) Top 20. She is 23 years old currently residing in Brooklyn, New York. Her dance style is Jazz and Contemporary.

For those unfamiliar with the show, SYTYCD is a dance competition looking for America’s favorite dancer. It has the same premise of Idol to find the best in America- in this case, the best dancer. The contestants are asked to perform different styles of dancing every week tutored by America’s best choreographers. The catch, they have very little time to rehearse and learn the dance ranging from hiphop, broadway, jazz, jive, disco, ballroom, salsa, etc. and my favorite- contemporary. If the contestants find themselves in the bottom three that week, they are asked to “dance for your life” in the hope that the judges will save them from eliminations. Two dancers are cut every week until it gets to the finals.

Charice Pempengco who goes by the name “Charice” now released her first US single “Note to God” on May 18, 2009 and just 6 days later lands on the Top 100 iTunes popular downloads chart at number 55! She beats even Jordin Sparks’ single “Battlefield” released on the same day at number 72. She is currently at the number 7 spot in Amazon.com’s own Top 100 MP3 songs. She has been in the Top 100 charts for six days. That is very hard to maintain considering Charice is competing with big worldwide names in the music industry! Impressive.

Here is a classic sample of an Erap adage, ‘Don’t judge a book if you are not a judge’.

The clip is from the first episode of Britain Got Talent 2009, where Susan Boyle, a 47 yr old woman made a surprising display of talent. Honestly, when I saw this clip, I was thinking that this is probably one of those type of viral clips like the Bulgarian Idol who sang the “Ken Lee” by Mariah Carey. But unlike that performance, Susan Boyle’s performance is an ‘In your face!’ type of performance. Go click the play button and watch for yourself.[Read more]

I don’t know anymore why I still watch Grey’s Anatomy now on its 5th season. There was a time when this Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning television show was at its best. Their peak was in Seasons 1-3, 2005 to early 2007 then it went downhill. The show is highly-acclaimed for its so called blind-casting, resulting in a racially diverse cast. It is also praised by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community and Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) group for its gay-themed storyline- a scarcity in primetime television these days. All is changed. I had faith in Shonda Rhimes, creator of the show but it is soon wading into oblivion.

The recent speculations that Katherine Heigl and TR Knight are leaving the show would have to be the clincher for me.

Flash Mob

Monday

Flash Mob

Flash Mob: a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse. The organization of flash mobs is generally accepted as being limited to the social media or viral emails, rather than organized by public relations firms or for a stunt. Also flash mobs are not politically or commercially motivated as described by Bill Wasik’s in where he said, they serve no purpose (wikipedia)

Recently I’ve been very much entertained watching flash mob videos in YouTube after watching a T-mobile flash mob gig. Though technically, based on the flash mob definition, this is not a flash mob because it was a stunt for a T-mobile ad, but nonetheless it was very much entertaining. As the music progress you can see more and more people “joining” the dance :) [Read More]
