***just before we move on this on this matter, check out the MALU FERNANDEZ PERFUME EXPERIMENT below***
“…To think that the paper itself is titled the Manila Standard Today, begs the question as to what kind of standards they are upholding. Indeed with such an article that was written by Malu Fernandez, The Manila Standard Today should have stepped up to the plate and fired Malu Fernandez. People Asia Magazine should never have ran that article as well…”
and so it begins … there’s now a signature campaign for Malu Fernandez to get fired and a boycott on the Manila Standard and People Asia. I wonder where this will all end? Is socio-economic bigotry going to be associated with the name Malu Fernandez in the future? Only time and history can tell.
I’m wondering why The Manila Standard hasn’t commented on this issue already. If you Google the phrase “Manila Standard” (even without the quotes), the boycott is now at 7th position.
UPDATE as of August 23 2007
It looks the Manila Standard responded via this blog

Magandang araw po. Bilang news editor ng Manila Standard Today, ipinaaalam ko lang sa inyo na walang kinalaman ang Manila Standard Today sa People Asia o kay Bb. Malu Fernandez.
Ang People Asia po ay isang magasin na inililimbag ng Philippine Star group of publications.

Am I being a diva? Or do you lack common sense?
UPDATE as of 24 August 2007
It seems that Malu Fernandez has apologized and also has resigned from the Manila Standard and People Asia. Here’s her (alleged) statement:
“…Statement from Malu Fernandez on the OFW Controversy
I am humbled by the vehement and heated response provoked by my article entitled ‘From Boracay to Greece!’ which came out in the June 2007 issue of People Asia. To say that this article was not meant to malign, hurt or express prejudice against the OFWs now sounds hollow after reading through all the blogs from Filipinos all over the world. I am deeply apologetic for my insensitivity and the offensive manner in which this article was written, I hear you all and I am properly rebuked. It was truly not my intention to malign hurt or express prejudice against OFWs.
As the recent recipient and target of death threats, hate blogs, and deeply personal insults, I now truly understand the insidiousness of discrimination and prejudice disguised as humor. Our society is bound together by human chains of kindness and decency. I have failed to observe this and I am now reaping the consequences of my actions. It is my fervent hope that the lessons that Ive learned are not lost on all those who through anonymous blogs, engaged in bigotry, discrimination, and hatred ( against overweight individuals , for example )
I take full responsibility for my actions and my friends and family have nothing to do with this. To date I have submitted my resignation letters to both the Manila Standard and People Asia, on that note may this matter be laid to rest…”
Of course, we want this matter to put to a rest and for everyone to move forward and move on but here’s a question – How will an OFW manning a booth react to Malu Fernandez if they see each other face to face?
and before we move on …
I’ve done this with my friends on the suspicion that NOT A LOT of people ACTUALLY know the scent of BOTH Charlie cologne and Axe Deo cologne. I know Axe Deo cologne but Charlie? One friend of mine said that’s the woman’s version of Jovan (which I know about). Here’s the thing though, while sitting in Hap Chan the other day I asked my friends and NOT ONE of them KNEW the SMELL of BOTH Charlie and Axe Deo Cologne.
which begs the question:
Why DOES Malu Fernandez KNOW the SMELL of BOTH?
(anyone agree this might be good stand-up material?)
btw I got BryanBoyed! Someone actually posted a link back to this post!

Taking note of topics that the mainstream media finds as the most important news of all (What sells the best – duh, what doesn’t sell is not news at all) led me to this – the sensational and the scandalous. And what is more in than showbiz’s bad girls? So here we have them:
First in line is movie beauty Jessica Alba who bravely appealed for more explicit male nudity in print.
The 26-year-old Fantastic Four actress is disgusted by the inequality between gender-targeted publications and is leading a campaign for more explicit nudity for female readers.
She says, “Men’s magazines have nipples, so why don’t women have a magazine where men show their penises?
“If there was a magazine like that I’d buy it. Nudity’s not a big deal to me.”

Now undergoing a major “facelift,” the “grand dame” of Manila’s theaters is on its way to being restored to its former glory.
The Art Deco building constructed in 1931 by Juan Arellano was badly damaged during wartime, and rebuilt in 1978 by former First Lady Imelda Marcos.
But the “Met,” as the “grand dame” of Manila’s theaters is fondly referred to, fell into decay a decade ago and closed down in 1996 following a long-running dispute between the Government Service Insurance System and the City of Manila over its ownership and management.

A U.P. Cebu College MassCom alumni gripes about why the media is not for her. The existence of Pinoy Big Brother (PBB), a deliberately shallow and contrived TV “reality” show, should be enough to discourage more from choosing the media as a career.
But no, I will not continue by indicting PBB as a mere triviality that no one should not bother with. The more than 1,571,556 votes for Beatriz Saw should dispel that notion for beneath the veneer of triviality are some deeper meanings that I have yet to decipher.
For the people who knows martial arts, they may have heard a lot of things from Japan, China and Korea. But not very many people know about Filipino martial arts. So here’s a little clip from the The Hunted (starring Tommy Lee Jones, and Benicio Del Torro) showcasing it.

Ligaw Liham, a film by Jay Abello, is one of the 10 finalists in the upcoming 2007 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Festival. It stars the very talented singer, Karylle, and newcomer John Michael Lee. This film also features two of Bacolod’s finest actors, John Gilbert Arceo and George Macainan. Ligaw Liham was shot entirely in Negros and beautifully pieced together on a Mac.
First off is Actress cameron Diaz who got harsh words from some Peruvian citizens over her use of “an olive green messenger bag emblazoned with a red star and the words ‘Serve the People’ printed in Chinese on the flap.”
“Serve the People” or STP, as Filipino militant activists would say, is one of Mao Zedong’s most popular slogans.
Apparently, a bunch of conservative Peruvians took notice of the movie star’s bag while she was exploring the Inca city of Machu Picchu in the Andes highlands.
With the rate of Filipinos dropping out of school has been increasing, can Manny Pacquiao save them?

“Super” at “Huwaaaaaaatt?!”
Huwaaaat?!
Mick Gleissner, the chairman of Bigfoot Entertainment, which is based in Cebu, Philippines was interviewed on this show. From what I gather in this conversation he is also an investor in the BPO industry.
Bigfoot Entertainment is confident that the movie industry will have stronger/greater rewards than the BPO industry.
Interview Highlights:
20:10
Local market is very limited. Thailand realized this and does not encourage locally target movies only.
20:40
It’s not just local film industry that there are revenues but enticing people to shoot movies in the Philippines. Thailand had 500 shootings, in the last 5 years which accounts for $1 Billion.
21:30
There’s a big government intervention in Thailand, because of it’s a big advertising tool for the country.
23:20
Movies (media) subtly, bring lifestyle, culture to the world, because we glorify what we see in movies. People go to Starbucks, buy SUV’s and acknowledge the power of cinema.

… what do these women celebrities have in common?
Gretchen Barreto and Jon Estrada scandal. A few days ago, pictures of Greta and Jon in what appears to be a display of intimacy, were circulated to the masses via the internet. Sisters, close friends, showbiz acquaintances have all been supportive and did everything they can short of admitting they were the ones who maliciously distributed the pictures. And here comes Jon, apologetic, taking in the responsibility, shouldering the burden and all the fault. Gretchen? She’s the victim here or so she has acted like it. But looking at the pictures – the “victim” is too comfy for the role. I wonder why everyone turned overprotective of her? For fear of Tonyboy’s talons? I can imagine Gretchen’s knees shake the minute she saw what happened to the pictures.
“No! It’s not right!”
Tell me, Paris. What’s not right – the fact that you drove under the influence of alcohol and endangered other people’s lives or the fact that you ignored the law twice after that and drove with a suspended license?
Oh, wait – you think it’s not right that you’re going to jail? Why is that not right? Is it because you’re special? Why, you’re Paris Hilton and you are above the law! Your family’s wealth can buy you out of any trouble!
