The Beatles Remasters – Part 1

Almost everyone who’s been born into this age knows that the best way to carry around your albums would be in digital format, safely tucked away in your iPod, along with hundreds of other songs downloaded from thenet. I won’t contest that. It’s convenient, and it lets you carry your entire music library in your pocket. Which brings us to The Beatles.

They’re my favorite band, and I’m so glad that I was able to listen to their music because it was easily available. But the thing is, the CD versions of The Beatles songs sound vastly different from the ones originally released in the ’60s. This is because the audio tapes that were converted to CD back in 1987 were not of the best quality. There was noticeable degration of sound quality, and the sound was way too tinny.

Enter the bootleg remasters. The remasters attempt to recreate the original vinyl sound by grabbing the audio from thevinyl discs themselves, and cleaning up the sounds.

Ellen DeGeneres gave all Rin on the Rox fans a reason to smile again after the pair’s YouTube channel “Hiphoprox” got canned. Ellen invited Erin Paula and Roxanne, whom she referred to as “friends” to cover Sir Elton John’s Oscar Party! Rin on the Rox, though a little bit too bubbly did a great job interviewing Hollywood stars who stopped by their spot.

I got this straight up from Kevin Rivers, the CEO of WaTunes himself when he buzzed me and told me to check out the new WaTunes blog post. Here’s the relevant excerpt:

“So what if you’re a paid artist now? If you’re a paid monthly artist now. This month will be the last time you’ll ever submit your $10 monthly fee. Starting April 1st (And this is NO APRIL FOOLS joke!), every artist will be able to sell their music unlimited, earn 100% of royalties, to any store, all for FREE! This is a plan that will never change and will be a permanent view of the ever growing music industry. We’ve now set the pace, now it’s up to you to embrace it!”

Well, amen brother. It’s good that WaTunes has decided to take the lead on this one.

Talk about great timing for the princesses of YouTube to pay Ellen DeGeneres a visit! Rin on the Rox, that would be Erin Paula and Roxanne, made their first ever television appearance on Tuesday, February 3 on the highly-popular, syndicated worlwide- Ellen DeGeneres Show. As a thank you, Ellen handed them a pair of tickets to see the Grammys where huge popular music stars attend every year! Confirmed performers Rin and Roxanne will witness are: Neyo, Rihanna, Radiohead, Jennifer Hudson, Katy Perry, Chris Brown, T.I., Carrie Underwood, Justin Timberlake, Estelle, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Paul McCartney and U2!! The Oscars of music and Rin on the Rox are going to see it! Ellen so casually reminded them to bring a camera for this big event that you and I won’t probably ever get to see live in our lifetime! Of course, they MUST bring a camera!

who do we believe this? This:

“…There were hits. Bamboo kept the rock flame alive and he had Kailan. Also okay were Callalily’s Ako’y Babalik, Hale’s Leaf of Faith, 6Cyclemind’s Saludo, Betamax by Sandwich and Parokya ni Edgar’s Akala. But that was the problem. They were just okay. We had no Narda by Kamikazee or Pinoy Ako by Orange & Lemons, Spagheti by Sex Bomb or even a Pagdating ng Panahon by Aiza Seguerra, songs from the past that really took the country by storm…”

Just got this from Kevin Rivers:

“”By introducing this new business model for our digital distribution services, we’re able to put in a huge effort and go beyond a normal distribution method to establish a personal relationship with each artist and label to help them strive to reach their true sales and music potential.”

If you’re a Filipino indie artist/band, this is good news! There’s quite a number of tracks by Pinoy musicians on the site already! Check my latest startup in beta.watunes.com

So, I haven’t touched this blog for the longest time. But since I’ve already started a tradition of posting my favorite songs of the year (plus, I’ve got lots of not-at-work time to spare), I can’t not do the same for 2008. Like the previous years’ top 10, not all of these were released in 2008. And of course, this list is based purely on personal enjoyment. Check out the list in my blog.

Okay.

Maybe there’s a better word to describe 2008 for Filipino music? Lackluster?

Payong as BEST SONG OF THE YEAR for 2008?

NOT TO DIS the singer or the song (Ms. Ganda is church-mate and I love the “redeemed” lyrics)

But C’mon. Read it again.

I could think of several hits – Betamax by Sandwich, Yugto by Rico Blanco, Buhay ng Gangstah by OG Sacred of the Tribu Boys (hey they have almost 3 MILLION hits on YouTube!). In fact that’s why there was QLE Awards because THERE WAS TOO MANY SONGS, BANDS and ALBUMS that was WORTH MENTIONING for 2008! We could argue that 2008 was a GOLDEN YEAR for OPM as Cris Ramos points out in his Golden Brown article:

“… 2008 has been a year so great for local music that even with the long list below, a lot of these same albums could have placed higher if they had been released in most of the previous years and a lot of other releases were left out. In a year where musicians have learned the values of guerrilla marketing and the virtues of the Internet, they relied much less on major labels. 2008 was truly an outstanding year where new albums were released virtually every week. The downside of this, of course, is that this list will probably get more violent reactions than ever before. Some of the good stuff are bound to be left out. But hey, the point is to go out there and make your own…”

I’d also like to re-quote Erwin Romulo (who is all QLE-d out by now hahaha) from his REAL ARTICLE, that got re-posted from Luis Katigbak blog title appopriately enough, THIS IS OUR TRUTH, TELL US YOURS:

“…This year, there was so much great music released locally that a couple of us—namely, music lovers Luis Katigbak and Quark Henares—decided that we should make up our own awards to point out the stuff that was regrettably overlooked by others. Let me offer apologies that we couldn’t think of a better title for it but let the winners be our saving grace. In any case, we did this for nothing more than love of music—and only that. No, we certainly didn’t agree on everything but that’s how these things go, especially with how opinionated we all are. What’s important is that we explain to you our choices and not just dish them out with no one the wiser. But then again, anyone who still wants to argue can buy each of us coffee and we’ll gladly discuss. After all, this is our truth; what’s yours?…”

And just to respond to their inspiration, I even came out with my own QLE Hommage and an interview to boot.

So there.
