The Runaways movie premieres nationwide in the US, March 20th- the same day The Twilight Saga: New Moon DVD is released. Now Twi-hards have another thing to obsess about- Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart star in a biopic of the first all-female rock band in the mid-70s, known as The Runaways who lived up to that tumultuous era in rock n’ roll. This Indie movie was first presented in Sundance on Janaury 2010 and was luckily picked up by Apparition for wider distribution.
This movie isn’t for the fainthearted Twilight fans nor is it for under 17 (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian) as this gets an R rating for sex, drugs, rock ’n’ roll — all of it under age. I don’t recommend young girls to watch this unless they can clearly take the good out of the bad from it.
The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing. – Walt Disney
I think Walter got it right from the start. He did not only envision a world with “Disney” products or movies, but yes, he did create it. [continue reading]

I got a text from Mark Laccay (who did the sound re/design for Engkwentro) while I was in the middle of one of my missions fundraising gigs:
“It is done! Venice International Film Festival 2009 Orizzonti Winner ENGKWENTRO!!! Mabuhay ang Pinoy Film Maker! Ipagkalat at ikasaya natin lahat!”
Wow. It was just a few weeks ago when I was at the SweetSpot Studio documenting Pepe Diokno, Mark Laccay and their audio team doing the finishing touches for Engkwentro before it was shown in Cinemalaya, I was there shell-shocked when Cinemalaya didn’t give a SINGLE official award to Engkwentro, I was there outside the CCP smiling inside knowing, it took a lot of guts for the foreigner Cinemalaya juror to grab the microphone and give Engkwentro the first “unofficial” jury citation in Cinemalaya history, I remember choosing the Cory yellow-inspired poster for the Venice version and I remember having to FTP the Engkwentro soundtracks for the Venice red carpet while GMail was done via IMAP.
It’s all worth the roller-coaster ride and congratulations to Pepe Diokno who was ONLY 21 years old and a U.P Film undergrad (and still is I think) when he finished! Pepe Diokno’s Engkwentro is the second Filipino director to be in Venice (after Mike de Leon’s “Sister Stella L” in 1984- I have to disagree with Ricky Lo on this one since Engkwentro was already considered by Venice DURING Cinemalaya, so Brillante Mendoza becomes the third Filipino director to compete, although the first to compete both in Cannes and Venice)
one last quote from Mark Laccay from his facebook:
“Engkwentro WINS 2 Major Award At the Venice Film Fest 2009!!!!! Orizzonti 2009 Award and The Lion Of the Future Award!!!! Mabuhay and Pinoy Independent Film Maker!!!!!
Mabuhay ang Pinoy Talent!!!!!!!!!”

“when a mortal met THE meg ryan…”

Artistic pretensions rock!
They had to do it.
One of the jurors in Cinemalaya Cinco had to grab the mic and say what was on everyone’s mind -
“Why wasn’t Engkwentro recognized?”
The juror said that the jurors decided to give an unprecendented, unofficial SPECIAL MENTION to Pepe Diokno for his intentions with his film Engkwentro – that at 21 years old – for someone to make a film like that – was a feat in itself.
Hey, I love the fact that Last Supper No.3 won – I laughed my heart out in the film – an as an aspiring observational stand-up comedian, it heartens me that people get it now.
But I think they should have given Engkwentro the Jury Prize – maybe it could have shared it with the other two?
I’m thinking that maybe, just maybe, the jurors were thinking:
“… Pepe Diokno is ONLY 21 years old, he’ll make more films, let’s give him time to … mature …”
Some questions:
- how many 21-year olds do you know would do a social commentary on the vigilante death squads in the South?
- how many 21-year olds would try to do those 30-minute (“one take”) shots?
- how many 21-year olds would try to re-create the whole sound (yes, it wasn’t “live sound …) for his film
- how many 21-year olds would be brave enough to satirize a topic that has been put under the rug for some time
CINEMA FOR SOCIAL CHANGE – if you want to change society with films – you need to send out the right message to the young people.
I could still remember the perplexed expression in Pepe Diokno’s face when he exited the Main Theater of the CCP after the Awards night a few hours ago – and I’m thinking -
“Is this the way we encourage young people to change society with cinema – by giving a 21-year old first-time film maker ZERO AWARDS on your awards night?”
Somewhere, somehow there’s a lesson here. I hope the other film festivals would vindicate Pepe Diokno.
(full disclosure: I did some stills among other things for Engkwentro and my business partner recreated the whole sound of the film from the ground up (Mark Laccay FTW! )so at least you have a context of my rant but COME ON – ZERO AWARDS? oh well …)

I was searching for the trailer and anything I could find of “Fame,” a remake of the the 1980’s smash hit movie opening this fall 2009 because So You Think You can Dance Season 4 Top 20 finalist- Kherington Payne is part of the cast. As I was watching, Anna Maria Perez de Tagle introduced herself and my “Fildar” (Filipino radar!) beeped. scoured her name and my hunch was right!
Anna Maria, 19, born in San Francisco, CA is of Filipino, Irish and Spanish descent. She is the granddaughter of Filipina singer-actress Sylvia La Torre.
I think her long name: Anna Maria Francesca Enriquez Perez de Tagle kind of also gave it away for her. We Filipinos are among those who carry 4-6 names total. I have 5.
I didn’t realize how popular she is on TV playing alongside Miley Cyrus aka Miley Stewart in the hit Disney show “Hannah Montana” as Ashley Dewitt and another Disney hit show “Camp Rock” as Ella. I’m sorry but I’ve never seen a Hannah Montana or Camp Rock episode so I didn’t know. I never knew she existed until today. Yay!
from AFP:
“Brillante Mendoza of the Philippines on Sunday picked up the best director prize at the Cannes film festival for his dark movie ‘Kinatay’.”
I love the Brillante Mendoza quote:
“This is not just entertainment, these kinds of stories are real”.
twit about it an use the hashtag: #kinatay

There’s an upcoming movie this April starring Ali Larter (Heroes, Resident Evil) and Beyonce Knowles (you know her), which seems like the kind of movie I wanna watch. Simply because I wanna know some things that the trailer never tell yet.
Have you seen the latest Edition of Fast and the Furious yet or any previous installation parts of it? Or at least the trailer? I’m sure it’s not all about the actors or the story why you like those movies, but the car and the race and the intense and the excitement. What am I talking about… forget it…
I’m sure you’re very excited to see the Watchmen tonight in cinemas, so why not check out the trailer first?
Honey will not be caught dead watching a Filipino movie. But he is still in Cambodia and I and my three old friends had nothing to do one Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago. Perfect timing. I can be as jologs as I want and I have a jolly-ogs good time. So off the four of us (myself, two manangs and one son of a manang – who tagged along with us under threat of loss of allowance by his mother) went to Gateway to watch A Very Special Love, the romantic comedy movie of John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo.
To protect their kasosyalan (or so they think),
I am not disclosing the names of my friends (they all have dignified positions with decent employers and the son studies in a posh school). Myself… well, I can’t deny it any longer… I’m simply as jologs as can be.
Nonetheless, when we were queuing up in Gateway, we looked around surreptitiously to check if there were any media people waiting in ambush after we leave the theater to interview us about our rave reviews to be broadcast in the evening news or worse, The Buzz. Thankfully, there were none. Darn… secretly, I was prepared with my line which would have gone like this.. “Ang galing-galing ni Sarah! Ang guapo-guapo ni John Lloyd! Aaaaaaaaaaah!” with matching jumping up and down and clapping my hands in glee. Anyway, since there were no media people around at that time, I’ll just say it here – “Ang galing-galing ni Sarah! Ang guapo-guapo ni John Lloyd!” (jumping up and down and clapping my hands in glee).

Just awhile ago me and my hubby just finished watching “Twilight” at SM City Cebu. Well, frankly speaking the movie didn’t impress me — I was expecting the middle earth war
, on the other hand, the crowd really interest me — It was like watching together with a few hundreds of teens and kids.
