The Philippines According to Blogs

Yesterday, I was left alone at a friend’s house and I decided to watch this movie called “Facing the Giants”. The movie is about a high school football team that has grown accustomed to losing. Parents blame head coach Grant Taylor. Taylor blames his apathetic players. And the players blame former star players who transferred to other teams to escape the vicious cycle in hopes of being noticed by college scouts. With Taylor’s job on the line, and his personal life in chaos (he’s growing tired of not being able to provide a nice car and home for his wife, and he’s just discovered that he’s the reason his wife can’t get pregnant), he turns to God in a deep and moving way. EXT. INSIDE AN APC CRUISING THROUGH AFGHANISTAN - DAY

TONY STARK is flirting with some SOLDIERS

		TONY STARK
Hi, I’m Tony Stark. You might know me
as Robert Downey Jr. and I’m perfect
for this role because I’m an alcoholic.

		SOLDIERS
OMG we’re in the same van as Robert
Downey Jr! Let’s all fanboy him and do
kawaii signs because we’re idiots and
we’ll die within the next 3 minutes!

The APC in front of them explodes. The soldiers try to
protect TONY STARK the best way they could- by getting
killed and leaving TONY STARK to fend for himself.

We’ve all done it! Admittedly, I do. It’s among my fave pastimes in the internet: Googling my name, my family’s or somebody else’s name. It’s always interesting what one can find by Googling a familiar name. It’s even more surprising to find a name exactly the same as ours.

For Filipinos and I guess for people with Spanish lineage, it is very rare to find names that’s exactly theirs. Blame it on our parents who seemed to find pleasure in blessing us with 2 or more! I have 4 names (including my middle name, which is actually my mother’s maiden name) with Maria as the first name. My three other sisters have Maria for their first names as well and they have at least 2 more excluding our last name.

In America and most parts of the world, people have only one first name, a middle name (that is actually just any other name-not from their mother’s maiden name!) and a last name (which could be taken from the father’s or the mother’s). Most often, they would drop the middle name altogether and just use a first and last name as in James Smith, Charles Davis, or Jennifer Taylor. Much easier to Google and finding a match, isn’t it? Sure beats finding the exact person with the 4 names I have!

This guy from Los Angeles, Jim Killeen takes Googling his own name to the next level! He made it into a movie! It’s the latest buzzword now here in America, “Google Me”! Like you and me, he Googled his name and found a list of his namesakes. This lead to an idea of what if I track and meet these people? He did and thus transformed his remarkable journey from different parts of the world into a documentary-movie that premiered in YouTube last Friday.

“What do a cop, a swinger, an Irish priest, an engineer, a father of eight, an Aussie and a gambler have in common?” says the YouTube description. The documentary of course, stars 7 guys named Jim Killeen.

iron man week

Like all great movie trilogies, the second movie has to live up to the first, and maybe even try to surpass it. It also has to build the story and the conflict for the third movie’s awesome finish. On top of all that, it has to stand on its own. It has to be a strong enough movie so it won’t feel like just a bridge connecting two towers of AWESOME. That’s a lot of responsibility for a movie. Thank God this isn’t a movie. This is the second part of Cinemabuzz, Comicology, and Face Rockery’s collaborative list of the 15 Best Comic Book Movies of All Time! HAHAHAHAaaaiiineed a drink.

Now, before we start, make sure you’ve read the first part of the list over at Cinemabuzz. If you haven’t done that yet, please do so now. … Done? Awesome. Let’s go.

Bored Ka Na Ba? Manood ng Ploning!

If you’re looking for a great movie to watch this season, Ploning is a great movie to watch.

I was able to watch it last April 25, and it was just amazing. The last scenes had me bawling, and it wasn’t Gina Pareño’s tour de force moment of high drama.

What made the movie amazing were:

  • The cinematography.
  • Miss Judy Ann Santos’ subtle and alluring acting.
  • The beauty of Cuyo.
  • The fluidity of the story, the transitions, everything. It’s all like a dance!
  • How it sears you to the bone and yet leaves you with a light feeling.
  • It gives you something to think about.
  • It is NOT your usual Filipino film.

Looking for something to watch other than the usual brainless slapstick fare? Looking for a glimmer that Philippine Cinema is on the way to a renaissance? Ploning the Movie is one movie you shouldn’t let out of your list of movies to watch.

For more of what it was like, more incisive pre-showing and post-watching analyses, head on here.

A True Mean Girl Story

mean girls week

To end Mean Girls Week, I think it’s appropriate if I share a mean girl story. A story plucked from my own retarded high school past. It’s not a story about skanky bitches calling everybody “sluts” and “whores”. It’s about high school drama, angst, and awkward silences. It’s about me being in jail with a girl named Vanessa.

I went to a Catholic school in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Canossa School to be exact. A place were dreams are born and hearts are broken. A breeding ground for leaders, jocks, losers, artists, mean girls, and background dancers for noontime TV shows.

Gretchen: That is so fetch!
Regina: Gretchen, stop trying to make fetch happen! It’s not going to happen!

This being Mean Girls Week, I feel that it’s my duty as a responsible blogger to ask and explore the question “What if So fetch! happened?”

Why I Love Narnia

I first learned of the Chronicles of Narnia when I was in high school. If you’re a die-hard geek, there is this certain arrogance that you feel that tells you that since you ‘almost’ know everything, there is nothing more to it than intimidate people with those geeky jargons. And so when I heard of the Chronicles of Narnia, I was like, “Why would I read a book for kids? It’s too LOWLY for my taste.” Read more…

Robots

I like very much movies that talk about how a seemingly helpless individual who is gifted with a special mission can end up creating a change in his society. Examples of such movies are The Lord of the Rings, Happy Feet, and of course Robots. Read more . . .

DVD Library #14: Mean Girls

mean girls week

To open this totally fabulous Mean Girls Week, I think it’s just appropriate that we start with a review of the Mean Girls DVD. Yes, I got weird looks when I bought it. No, I’m not gay (not that there’s anything wrong with that). I’m just an admirer of this often misjudged modern classic based on a self-help book for parents with no narrative whatsoever. Also, I have a thing for hot girls in pink.

Why the Terminator is Bittersweet

The theme of The Terminator is something commonplace–pessimistic futurism, human induced everything-ends-in-chaos view of the world. You see this in Matrix also. The same theme (minus the high-tech) is in Mad Max, Waterworld…and other storylines. However, what makes The Terminator interesting is the use of the time travel concept. the concept itself is not new, but the way that it is used makes it interesting. Read more . . .
