First Friday Five

Several readers have been writing me to request for my recommendations for health and medical websites. I have been planning to put every great website I found so far, but I think doing so in one shotgun affair would probably overwhelm you. So I thought of making every Friday a day when I will post not only the coolest sites I found about health and medicine, but other websites that are also worth your while and will inspire you to learn something new. Compulsive Shopping in Men

Monday

You think only women deserve to be called as compulsive shoppers?

Think again!

Even men can become compulsive buyers and end up ruining their lives.

Eddie Mercado’s “Key-Kwan”

Monday
Sep 25,2006

Key-Kwan. Key-Kwan!!! Key-Kwan???

Sadness and happiness rolled into one
Frustration wrapped in one capsule
Irony of ironies, Oh Fate so cruel!
You were the Master of your craft
Your words and your voice made
Acclaim, fortune, and beauty
Haunt you endlessly
To you, emceeing was child’s play
Suave, cool, decent, and refreshing
Everyone was under your spell
But good things end
A gaping void now remains
Crestfallen with your extinction,
We bid you —
Good night, Eddie
Rest well

I bid goodbye to a great man.

More On Dengue Cases and Deaths

Wednesday
Sep 20,2006

I found more confusing and conflicting statistics regarding dengue cases and deaths in the Philippines covering last year and this year. Worse, our very own DoH has published the said faulty statistics last weekend in major dailies and made a hasty conclusion that there was a “42-percent drop in dengue cases this year.”

There might be a drop in the overall number of dengue cases this year, but it is not 42-percent.

Also, if you do some math, the noted increase in the number of dengue cases in Metro Manila is definitely more than the 43-percent published.

Dengue is already an alarming disease as it is. Giving conflicting numbers and deriving erroneous conclusions is even worse.

Sabio’s Blood Pressure

Tuesday
Sep 19,2006

The Philippine Senate should cut some slack on the plight of PCGG’s Camilo Sabio. I know many of you might think it’s a lame excuse, if indeed, this man is guilty as the Senators say. But with the kinds of possible diseases he might already have by now, I think justice has already been served.

Dengue and the DOH… duh

Saturday
Sep 16,2006

I woke up to this paid advertisement this morning — DOH it na!”4-S KONTRA DENGUE” 42% less DENGUE cases this year compared to the same period last year. When you look at it parang impressive diba? So why all the hullabaloo from media about the rise in dengue cases? Wait…

In that same paid ad, the DOH comes up with a chart showing the decrease in dengue cases and deaths by region as of September 9, 2006. Nation-wide, yes, admittedly there has been a decrease from 25, 682 reported cases in 2005 down to 14, 915 cases this 2006. Pero teka, that is on a national level. If you take the chart apart, and read the fine print, so to speak, you will note three striking figures … more on the dreaded dengue and DOH’s response here…

Fighting the common cold

Friday
Sep 15,2006

Of course, the healthier the immune system you have, the better chances your body has in defeating the invading cold virus and prevents you from getting the common cold. You can boost your immune system by of course eating a healthy diet, resting well (read: getting the right amount of sleep), drinking lots of fluids, vitamin supplements, covering your nose and mouth when some one else coughs or sneezes nearby and of course by washing your hands before eating something or rubbing your eyes.

I’ve been doing everything I mentioned before except for the part about getting the right amount of sleep, because for the past weeks, no months, no years, I’ve become accustomed to sleeping late at night and often times less than the recommended 8 hours. Then again, I compensate with regular green tea, tai chi practice and citrus fruits.

Sleep Paralysis

Monday
Sep 11,2006

I experienced my first sleep paralysis several months ago, and since then, I’ve had it four times — all after waking up.

The first time, I was lying on my right side, facing the wall, when I woke up. I saw the wall, my pillow, and my rottweiller doll, but I couldn’t move. I was in that state for what felt like a long time, a little panicky that I wouldn’t be able to go back. I thought it was one of those out-of-body experiences gone wrong. And my biggest worry was not dying, but that my housemate would go in my room to wake me up, find me dead, and freak the hell out. So I concentrated, tried to move, and succeeded after a while.

I’ve been sick for the past few weeks. I think my sickness is worse than what the doctor diagnosed. Am I hypochondriac?

    Buffy Unaired Pilot

    Monday
    Sep 4,2006

It’s been what, a year, and I’m still on Firefly withdrawal. So I finally decided to try out Joss Whedon’s previous work: Buffy and Angel and apparently it’s the best time to get started because thanks to the magic of Youtube, the unaired Buffy Pilot is now available to the public.

Because of the huge number of PCs in the world, volunteer computing can (and does) supply more computing power to science than does any other type of computing. This computing power enables scientific research that could not be done otherwise.

This advantage will increase over time, because the laws of economics dictate that consumer electronics (PCs and game consoles) will advance faster than more specialized products, and that there will simply be more of them.

Volunteer computing power can’t be bought; it must be earned. A research project that has limited funding but large public appeal (such as SETI@home) can get huge computing power. In contrast, traditional supercomputers are extremely expensive, and are available only for applications that can afford them (for example, nuclear weapon design and espionage).

Volunteer computing encourages public interest in science, and provides the public with voice in determining the directions of scientific research.

The sonogram was just the start of a long day’s journey into night – perhaps, the longest night of all my 41 years. From Dr. Pangan’s clinic, we called my OB, Dr. Prudence Aquino, who then directed me to have a Beta HcG blood test done to confirm pregnancy. Since we were on the way home, she asked us to proceed to Medical City which was much closer to our house. continue here

A week ago today I was in a tremendous amount of pain. Little was I to know then that my life could have ended in that instant. But God is faithful and His hand was and is upon me.

Last Sunday, August 27 I was rushed to the hospital for an emergency laparascopy due to an ectopic pregnancy. For weeks now, if you have been reading my blog entries, I had been complainingof an unusual pain in my lower right side.

Come to think of it, isn’t true that you’re barely using the full capacity of your computer’s horsepower? You conduct a performance test only to find out that the fraction of your computer’s full capacity and capabilities that you use on your average e-life could be delivered by an another computer costing less than what’s on the price tag of your machine?

Simply put, you’re not using your computer to its full capacity, hence its full monetary value. That’s your hard earned-money idling away inside a metal box with a lease to be on the “latest model” shelf for barely three years.

Worry not too much. For there is hope in turning this investment into something worth every centavo you’ve sweated and toiled over for it.

    In The Beginning

    Monday
    Aug 14,2006

In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth and populated the Earth with broccoli, cauliflower and spinach, green and yellow and red vegetables of all kinds, so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives.

Then using God’s great gifts, Satan created Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream and Krispy Creme Donuts. And Satan said, “You want chocolate with that?” And Man said, “Yes!” and Woman said, “and as long as you’re at it, add some sprinkles.” And they gained 10 pounds. And Satan smiled.
