Based on a recent article, regarding how it is the books we read early on in life which truly have a profound influence on us, I look back at literature which has been particularly influential to me, and note how I’ve read many of them well into adulthood – although I did in fact read quite a few books growing up that had a significant influence on my development, especially in terms of my perception of morality and religion.
For the second installment of Covers Carnival, I thought I should do something different. So instead of just typing text to describe and make fun of the covers, I figured maybe I should dick around with the covers themselves. Am I making sense? Of course not. Nevertheless, here are ten Baddified covers of Archie and Friends.

Looks like I’m on a one-post-per-three-weeks schedule with these reviews. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing, and I don’t want to spend a whole paragraph on figuring it out. So let’s get right on to the reviews.

Secret Six #1: I enjoyed The Six’s guest appearance in Birds of Prey so much back when Gail Simone was still writing that series, I decided to check out their first ever ongoing. It’s now on my pull list. I guess I just got to have a Gail Simone book in there at all times (I dropped Wonder Woman because it just wasn’t working out for me).

Umiiyak tayo, nasasawi, nabibigo, at natututo.
FilipinoWriter.Com is one such enclave that I’ve been regularly visiting since its inception a few years back. A community of wordsmiths both professional and amateur, this niche in cyberspace is a hotbed of talent waiting to erupt, threatening to engulf the mainstream scene and give established writers a run for their money. Consider one of the most popular novellas published in that site:

Judas Priest on a burning bicycle! Okay, so the proposed cover art leaves a lot of room for improvement. In fact, I think it’s about as abominable as an aging, washed-up Thai prostitute getting boned by a mangy Doberman named Rex on streaming video for a few grams of meth. Jeebus, but less excretable artwork have led wretches to the guillotine!
I’ve been defying my limit of comic book purchases per week for the last 3 weeks, and it feels so good. I do expect to cut down on some of the titles after Secret Invasion and Final Crisis. I’m starting to really despise big “events”. Bah. Now, onto the reviews!

X-Factor Special: Layla Miller – This one-shot made me regret not picking up the Quicksilver special, thinking that it was just as awesome as this one. Peter David gives us a depressing but oftentimes funny peek into one possible future where Layla has been trapped since Messiah Complex, and it’s a very good read.
Before we get into the reviews, here’s a short message from Dr. Doom:
DOOM: Behold! The new Emperor of Twitter: VICTOR VON DOOM! Follow DOOM on Twitter lest you feel his wrath! DOOM COMMANDS IT!
Thank you, Mr. Emperor of Twitter. Now, on to the reviews!

Uncanny X-Men #500 – I had great expectations for this issue, and that probably explains why I’m disappointed. Maybe there was just too much going on and it felt like an extra-sized preview book. Maybe it’s the distracting art. I don’t know. Don’t get me wrong, I love Terry Dodson’s art and I don’t hate Greg Land’s “lightbox style”, but they just don’t mix, is all I’m saying.
I didn’t go to the recently concluded San Diego Comic-Con, but thanks to the magic of the Internets, I got all the news and ridiculous photos of ridiculous people in ridiculous costumes from the event that I needed. And then some. It took me a couple of days to rummage through my bookmarks and feeds, but I eventually singled out 10 news items that made my balls sweaty with geeky anticipation. Here be the list:

1. Agents of Atlas Ongoing Series! My mancrush on Jeff Parker began when I was awesomed deeply by the Agents of Atlas mini-series back in 2006. My love for AoA has been well documented (Love & War, 2006 Awesome List, Lantern of Doom!, Agents of Atlas, Top 5 Lists #9 of 10: Graphic Fiction, and Giant-Size Rockery), so it goes without saying that I am extremely happy to learn that I’ll be getting my dose of AoA monthly starting early 2009.
Because nobody demanded it, a new blog series! In this new series, I shall cover (hyuk! hyuk!) awesome comic book covers just because. This is exactly the same kind of dickery I pulled in Face Rockery with the blog series Face-Rocking Covers. So yeah, this is basically me making fun of comic book covers. High five?
For this inaugural Cover Carnival entry, we’ll be looking at a few covers of Batman. Unless you were living under a stupid rock (I mean, who does that? Really.) for the last year, you’ll understand why I find Batman covers to be appropriate for this initial offering. The Dark Knight spelunked (New word!) into theaters last week and Batman is understandably in everybody’s consciousness right now. This is how I’m celebrating this most awesome of awesome movies.

The Bat-Signal. ON THE MOON. And it’s daylight where the signal is coming from. Think about that for a moment, will you?
I’ve been wanting to try out a couple of ongoing series these past few weeks, but looking at my pull list, I think I’ll wait for a few months before I add new titles to it. And with that inconsequential introduction out of the way, it’s time for some reviews!

Guardians of the Galaxy #3 – Continuing the energy and unadulterated awesomeness of the first two issues, this issue is full to the brim with action, suspense, mystery, and fun. I’m getting used to the “debrief log” framing device, and I’m getting used to the idea that this group of characters is an actual team. Sure, most of the awesomeness comes from a talking raccoon with huge ass guns, but the other Guardians contribute to the fun too. Add the mystery of Starhawk and Vance Astrovik, an attack force running on prayer power, and a fascinating cliffhanger to the developing group dynamics, and you have yourself a solid read.
The July 7/14 issue of Newsweek featured Yale University’s 2008 Environmental Performance Index (EPI)—“a global ranking of nations with the best, and worst, environmental track records,” the magazine cover said. Find out how the Philippines fared, as well as “who’s who” in the best and worst in being green around the world. Also, some concerns are highlighted, particularly on the application of weights for some categories like climate change, including some intrinsic limitations to some indicators, which may not be adequate enough to describe the Philippines’ performance.

Yes, I’m bringing the noise back into this blog. And when I say “noise”, I mean “comic books and other geeky stuff”. I bought a lot of comics last week so I thought now’s the best time to force some comics goodness down your unsuspecting throats. Also, I just closed Face Rockery, so, yeah. There’s that. And here we go:

Thor: Reign of Blood – The second Thor one-shot from my current man-crush, Matt Fraction, has everything I loved about the first one. Violence! Trickery! Cruel gods! Sexy goddesses! All-around awesomeness! Seriously, Thor piloting the Blood Colossus to smite the vast army of the undead while it’s raining blood? That’s so bad ass it should be illegal.
I love this song strangely because it quaintly brings me back to the simple things of life. It reminds me of the importance of appreciating the stops of life and the need to be thankful. Not at all celebrating the ordinary (which I often remember whenever I think of Neruda’s Ode to Simple Things), but it is simply being thankful for the things that we often take for granted and relegate to ordinariness. There’s no better way to bring back my totally useless blog series, Face-Rocking Covers, than the first day of this most momentous week: IRON MAN WEEK YAY! Obviously, we’ll be taking a look at some of ol’ Shellhead’s old face-rocking comic book covers. The Invincible One didn’t catch the fancy of the general public until the movie was announced, which baffles me since Iron Man is one rockin’ mofo. Observe:

One of the most suspenseful covers ever. Seriously. It’s a dude trying to get his normal clothes off and desperately trying to put on his suit of armor… WHILE FALLING TO HIS CERTAIN DEATH! If only he thought of bringing this thing called a “parachute”.
The deadline for submission of nominations for the 2008 National Book Awards is 30 April 2008. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, this information has not been widely disseminated. I am, therefore, reproducing the guidelines from the Manila Critics Circle (MCC) the National Book Development Board (NBDB) below. More…
