May 1 is RSS Day

May 1 may be more famous in the Philippines as Labor Day, but on the other side of the world, a campaign to raise awareness about RSS is also happening today. Continue reading the whole post…

We’ve all done it! Admittedly, I do. It’s among my fave pastimes in the internet: Googling my name, my family’s or somebody else’s name. It’s always interesting what one can find by Googling a familiar name. It’s even more surprising to find a name exactly the same as ours.

For Filipinos and I guess for people with Spanish lineage, it is very rare to find names that’s exactly theirs. Blame it on our parents who seemed to find pleasure in blessing us with 2 or more! I have 4 names (including my middle name, which is actually my mother’s maiden name) with Maria as the first name. My three other sisters have Maria for their first names as well and they have at least 2 more excluding our last name.

In America and most parts of the world, people have only one first name, a middle name (that is actually just any other name-not from their mother’s maiden name!) and a last name (which could be taken from the father’s or the mother’s). Most often, they would drop the middle name altogether and just use a first and last name as in James Smith, Charles Davis, or Jennifer Taylor. Much easier to Google and finding a match, isn’t it? Sure beats finding the exact person with the 4 names I have!

This guy from Los Angeles, Jim Killeen takes Googling his own name to the next level! He made it into a movie! It’s the latest buzzword now here in America, “Google Me”! Like you and me, he Googled his name and found a list of his namesakes. This lead to an idea of what if I track and meet these people? He did and thus transformed his remarkable journey from different parts of the world into a documentary-movie that premiered in YouTube last Friday.

“What do a cop, a swinger, an Irish priest, an engineer, a father of eight, an Aussie and a gambler have in common?” says the YouTube description. The documentary of course, stars 7 guys named Jim Killeen.

lumantao.comI have just launched a new website for my accounting practice and consultancy. As mentioned in the website, my services will be geared towards small and medium enterprises, or SMEs, as well as online or internet ventures in the Philippines.

I believe that, unlike large companies which have huge accounting departments with ready access to established accounting and auditing firms, SMEs usually make do with the crudest record-keeping by its owners and managers as source of financial information.

Entrecard has been proven many times over that it produces more traffic compared to other free traffic and free link exchange services and widgets in the internet. But, sad to say, some of its users find the traffic it produces as lacking quality; solely because they believe many of entrecard users are just after dropping their cards for credits, most of which resort to chain dropping and employing techniques to increase the frequency of their drops in a short period of time. Although there is some truth to it, I believe the majority of entrecard users don’t necessarily employ chain dropping without the attempt to take a moment and scan through what the blog in front of them is all about. The problem perhaps lies not in the intention of entrecard users but, with such a short attention span to jump from one blog to another, in the capacity of one’s blog to capture the interest of its visitor.

How then do you convert this constantly bouncing traffic from entrecard to the benefit of your blog? Here are the techniques I found through some hours of searches to help in taming entrecard and unlocking its full potential.

Raise

Okay. So I’ve been on almost a month long hiatus yet again and now, as always, I’m back explaining my absence as if you guys even care. But anyway, I have been spending so much time at work these days that I almost forgot I have a blog that I also need to update if not every day, at least every once in a while. Really, work has got me so “hooked up” that I’m doing this post here in the office on a Saturday – although it’s my day-off today – because the whole IT team is doing (some very confidential IT work that Uncle Marvin doesn’t really understand; in fact he doesn’t really know what he is doing in the IT field except for the occasional free internet – which he utilizes so profusely in his quest to learn about the possible benefits of Viagra to him and how it differs from other products such as Cialis and Enzyte – and Yahoo! Messenger in which chat rooms he frequents nowadays – that is if he’s not busy collecting information about Viagra* – where he is desperately trying to impress girls with relatively low self-esteem (no less) with any kind of conversations such as this:

The Top 30 Blogger Hacks Ever

This is an excerpt

…even though the blog add-ons (called plug-ins) that enhance WP blogs are free, you’ll still have to pay for them by way of ditching the yourname.wordpress.com domain and settling for your own custom one and paying for hosting.

So does this mean that Blogger users like you can never have the same functionality with your blogs? Of course not. I think Blogger users have an advantage over Wordpress users in terms of freedom and flexibility with their add-ons. So again, can Blogger blogs have the same functionality as Wordpress blogs? The short answer, yes. The long answer, this: The Top 30 Blogger Hacks Ever.

If you have a web site or blog and are using Twitter, you’ll find this very useful! I’ll show you how to tell your blog readers what you are doing not just on Twitter but all over the net with other Net services that you are using.

Matt Mullenweg’s recent post about a “bogus” WordPress security breach had me wondering about my own WordPress sites. Unfortunately, it turns out I’ve become a victim of a WordPress vulnerability whose symptoms are detailed here. Took me two whole nights of restoring my files and folders to their pristine condition. (Fingers crossed.) Take note that this is different from the ro8kfbsmag.txt hack, and seems to be a fairly recent attack. Thankfully, there are a lot of tell-tale signs:

If we consider the huge amount of content written by and about almost everyone in the internet, it is only logical to expect the increasing number of libel cases filed against bloggers.
