The Most Touching Divorce Letter

Tuesday
Jul 15,2008

Dear Wife:

I’m writing you this letter to tell you
that I’m leaving you forever. I’ve been a good man to you
for seven years and

I have nothing to show for it.

These last two weeks have been hell.
Your boss called to tell me that you
quit your job today and that was the
last straw.

Last week, you came home and didn’t
even notice that

I’ve been wanting to try out a couple of ongoing series these past few weeks, but looking at my pull list, I think I’ll wait for a few months before I add new titles to it. And with that inconsequential introduction out of the way, it’s time for some reviews!

Guardians of the Galaxy #3 – Continuing the energy and unadulterated awesomeness of the first two issues, this issue is full to the brim with action, suspense, mystery, and fun. I’m getting used to the “debrief log” framing device, and I’m getting used to the idea that this group of characters is an actual team. Sure, most of the awesomeness comes from a talking raccoon with huge ass guns, but the other Guardians contribute to the fun too. Add the mystery of Starhawk and Vance Astrovik, an attack force running on prayer power, and a fascinating cliffhanger to the developing group dynamics, and you have yourself a solid read.

If traveling is a crime, I’d be first to have his head go rolling. I simply can’t get enough of the quirks as well as the booboos that come with an unplanned itinerary: getting lost in massive and unfamiliar cities, going loco over labyrinthine subway stations, boarding (and hoarding) incredibly cheap (almost free) flights, taking long walks that end up at hawker food stalls, climbing breathtaking mountains (and literally losing my breath, injuring my knee and getting extremely dehydrated on my way down), and the thrill of having my passport stamped by excessively cheerful, or sometimes impossibly poker-faced or oftentimes unreasonably snooty immigration officers. Yes, I am a self-confessed backpacker. Give me a ticket and a Lonely Planet and I’ll be off to my next crazy adventure. Read more…

Backpacking Pinoy Style

Sunday

Filipino backpackers gave their insightful and inspiring, not to mention enviable, experiences on traveling around the world last July 3 at the Recreational Outdoor Exchange (R.O.X.) shop at the Fort. Five speakers shared their own travel plans and notes, and gave useful tips to the participants, each of whom was probably pondering silently on how they would execute such similar excursions.

Choosing the Right Martial Art for You

Finding Your Passion

I started learning about safety at an early age when my dad would teach me Judo techniques in his spare time. I’ve always been interested in martial arts and when I was young, would often fantasize about flying kicks and breaking bricks. As I got older, I wanted to turn my dreams into something real. I decided that I wanted to study martial arts formally. I then ventured into the world of martial arts to find out what I really wanted to get into.

If you’d like to start looking around for a martial art, try following the steps I took. They really helped me evaluate my options.

Yes, I’m bringing the noise back into this blog. And when I say “noise”, I mean “comic books and other geeky stuff”. I bought a lot of comics last week so I thought now’s the best time to force some comics goodness down your unsuspecting throats. Also, I just closed Face Rockery, so, yeah. There’s that. And here we go:

Thor: Reign of Blood – The second Thor one-shot from my current man-crush, Matt Fraction, has everything I loved about the first one. Violence! Trickery! Cruel gods! Sexy goddesses! All-around awesomeness! Seriously, Thor piloting the Blood Colossus to smite the vast army of the undead while it’s raining blood? That’s so bad ass it should be illegal.

PH ToyCon ’08 Photos

Sunday
Jun 15,2008

Today’s the last day for the 7th Philippine Toys, Hobbies, and Collectibles Convention (aka ToyCon 2008). Tonight, June 15, 2008 (Sunday), Ade‘s band, Lose Your Beer Belly, will perform from 7pm to 9pm.

To get inside Megatrade Hall (the venue: SM Megamall, 5th Level), you will have to pay a minimal amount of P80 (boo!). My friendly tip for hobbyists and enthusiasts: do not bring more than P1,000 with you because you will surely spend everything once you are inside. Happened to me. Wiped out the contents of my wallet. Good thing I only brought P1,000. Talk about foresight! I only spent P800 on rare comicbooks, no more than that. Right now, I wish I had bought more stuff, though. Oh, well. Today’s another day.

My Favorite Things

Thursday
Jun 12,2008

I love this song strangely because it quaintly brings me back to the simple things of life. It reminds me of the importance of appreciating the stops of life and the need to be thankful. Not at all celebrating the ordinary (which I often remember whenever I think of Neruda’s Ode to Simple Things), but it is simply being thankful for the things that we often take for granted and relegate to ordinariness. Today, we’re celebrating 110 years of Philippine Independence. To commemorate this awesome anniversary, I think it’s just appropriate that I introduce to you Marvel’s first Filipino super-team, the Triumph Division, that debuted last week in Invincible Iron Man #2!

Hit Where It Hurts!

Wednesday

In every self defense situation, awareness is key. It is not enough to be just aware of your surroundings–that is the first step. Sometimes, people forget that aside from being conscious and aware of the environment, we must also have knowledge of defense strategies.

Knowing how to use your body in self defense is like carrying a deadly weapon, specially if you understand the extent of damage you can cause to someone who attacks you. Always use self defense techniques responsibly.

Self defense is self preservation. In truth, the best defense is to prevent danger. Like they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

How does one prevent being mugged or attacked?

Before the Nokia N82 (five megapixels), even before the Samsung U700 (three megapixels), I used to carry around the then schmexy Motorola V3X, 2 megapixel snapper of a clamshell-type mobile phone. At times when I would get the urge to just point and shoot at people, the camphone is instrumental in curing the creative itch. The down side is, although the composition would almost always be impeccable (wink wink), the image output leaves much to be desired in terms of colors, depth, and contrast to name a few. Hell, it’s the general problem that plague users of mere point and shoot cameras.

Two years after I took Rochelle’s (my good friend’s) portrait, two years after I’ve tried editing the photo firsthand by only adjusting contrast and hues, would my newfound Photoshop killer skillz do more with an otherwise great photo? Another challenge is would said skillz work with an image taken using a two megapixel camphone? The result may make or break Scott Kelby’s reputation, author of the book The Photoshop CS2® Book for Digital Photographers so I better represent, ho!

Yesterday, I was left alone at a friend’s house and I decided to watch this movie called “Facing the Giants”. The movie is about a high school football team that has grown accustomed to losing. Parents blame head coach Grant Taylor. Taylor blames his apathetic players. And the players blame former star players who transferred to other teams to escape the vicious cycle in hopes of being noticed by college scouts. With Taylor’s job on the line, and his personal life in chaos (he’s growing tired of not being able to provide a nice car and home for his wife, and he’s just discovered that he’s the reason his wife can’t get pregnant), he turns to God in a deep and moving way. iron man week

Like all great movie trilogies, the second movie has to live up to the first, and maybe even try to surpass it. It also has to build the story and the conflict for the third movie’s awesome finish. On top of all that, it has to stand on its own. It has to be a strong enough movie so it won’t feel like just a bridge connecting two towers of AWESOME. That’s a lot of responsibility for a movie. Thank God this isn’t a movie. This is the second part of Cinemabuzz, Comicology, and Face Rockery’s collaborative list of the 15 Best Comic Book Movies of All Time! HAHAHAHAaaaiiineed a drink.

Now, before we start, make sure you’ve read the first part of the list over at Cinemabuzz. If you haven’t done that yet, please do so now. … Done? Awesome. Let’s go.
