Race to the Future

The 2008 Clark Freeport International Marathon

Clark Development Corporation (CDC) proudly announces the launch of RACE TO THE FUTURE – The 2008 Clark Freeport International Marathon.  This major sporting event has been in the planning stage for several months and CDC is proud to say that all the hard work is now coming to fruition.  To attract participants from all over the world, CDC is providing a track route that meets international standards and is offering world-class prizes totaling to 1.8 million pesos.  International marathon runners from Singapore. Malaysia, China, and Korea will also be joining the event.

International Marathons have gained great popularity all over the world, involving runners from all walks of life.  It is high time the Philippines gets involved in the international marathon circuit, a Clark Development official reveals.  Also, this is now the chance for every Filipino to win great prizes and international recognition.

Determined to comply with international standards and regulations, CDC has been conferred the sanction of the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) and the endorsement of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).  Recently, CDC held a contract signing with ActivAsia, Inc., a frontrunner in corporate events and product activation.  The contract signing officially launches the event and is headed by Mr. Liberato P. Laus, the President and CEO of CDC.  With the involvement of Locators at the Clark International Freeport, the event is expected to be a resounding success.

The marathon is set on January 13, 2008, Sunday.  It is expected to draw in spectators from all over the country. For more information, everyone is invited to log on and register online at http://www.clarkmarathon.com.

Seeking A Cure

Wednesday

My husband has psoriasis and has been suffering with the affliction for about 12 years now. Lately, it has graduated to psoriasis arthritis, which means it isn’t just an inflammation of the skin, which is the general characteristic of psoriasis, but it has also now inflamed his joints.

It isn’t easy living with the disease. Hubbie has had his moments when the pain would just be too much. A bottle of Advil, Tylenol and every other pain reliever would always be by our bedside table. And somedays, it doesn’t help anymore. So you could just imagine how much we’ve prayed for a relief from the illness.

Nov 27,2007

I’m hosting the 10th edition for the fourth year of Grand Rounds today at my health blog, Prudence, M.D.

What is Grand Rounds, anyway?

Grand Rounds is a weekly rotating blog carnival of the best of the medical blogosphere. Each week, usually on a Tuesday, a blogger will host in his site links to posts of different bloggers about medicine, medical life, experiences with doctors, nurses, and patients, commentaries and reviews about medical news and drugs…actually, anything that is related to medicine and health care.

So, if you’re interested in participating, just check out Grand Rounds later at my health blog, which would be available online today, November 27, 2007, 3:00 p.m. in the Philippines (and that would be about 2:00 – 3:00 a.m. EST).

Time Cover

It’s always fun to read about the Philippines in other countries in a positive light. Even this is just a blip on Time Magazine again.

Studies in the Philippines show that later-born siblings tend to be shorter and weigh less than earlier-borns. (Think the slight advantage the 6-ft. 5-in. [196 cm] Peyton Manning has over the 6-ft. 4-in. [193 cm] Eli doesn’t help when he’s trying to throw over the outstretched arms of a leaping lineman?) Younger siblings are less likely to be vaccinated than older ones, with last-borns getting immunized sometimes at only half the rate of firstborns. Eldest siblings are also disproportionately represented in high-paying professions. Younger siblings, by contrast, are looser cannons, less educated and less strapping, perhaps, but statistically likelier to live the exhilarating life of an artist or a comedian, an adventurer, entrepreneur, GI or firefighter. And middle children? Well, they can be a puzzle—even to researchers.

Wake T-Rex

I listed thirteen problems (a bad luck number, from ten) and hope to have covered all the problems Filipinos are facing.

13. Garbage (Dirt and Filth)
I am not really sure whether what I am doing here is pure garbage, but garbage on the streets surely irks me. The average Filipino takes a bath daily, but does not clean about as often. I think we have to solve this problem.

12. Floods
Related to #13, this problem is personal to me. In Meycauayan where I grew, there is flood everytime there is rain (not so before). In fact, even when there is no rain, there is flood due to high tide. The same is true in many parts of Metro Manila. I guess flooding is a concern of many Filipinos and deserves to be on this list.

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month’s goal is to increase awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a worldwide campaign. Through the pink ribbon, people honor survivors and loved ones, and support the progress towards defeating breast cancer.

The ribbon can be worn different ways – mostly by using it as a lapel pin. This website can also wear the pink ribbon and this can be done by listing up for the Pink for October. To support breast cancer awareness, blogs and websites will go pink for the whole month of october to get more people talking about breast cancer and just maybe raise money for cancer research.

Using contact lens

I cannot remember ever having clear vision. What I do remember is pretending I had clear vision such that it took years before I even bothered to have my eyes checked.

Now I find it funny as I recall waiting for the jeepney to stop in front of me so I will be able to read what route they will be going to. I would flag them down once I was sure I had the right ride which was most often seconds too late and they would be driving off.

I got my eyes checked when I was in my last year of college. My father was good enough to spend for expensive eyeglasses that made me look so…. round. At that time, there weren’t many choices for eyeglasses or I really was just clueless resulting in my buying the standard gold-rimmed ones. The lens and the frame were so heavy my already very small nose turned even smaller.

I can’t imagine going through Isabelle’s experience — living with a mutilated face for more than two years and then having someone else’s face (a suicide victim) for the rest of her life.

UP Going Cold Turkey

Saturday
Oct 6,2007

Cold Turkey- A smoking cessation strategy that involves abrupt cessation of smoking. Used alone, only 5% to 7% of smokers will remain abstinent long-term.

The shock of my life came when I saw the notices posted at Vinzons Hall banning smoking in UP. A no smoking policy inside the building is reasonable enough but every other place I can think of where one can smoke such as parking lots, tambayans, gardens are still off limits to smokers. What the hell? Is this still UP?

The horror!

Don’t get high on drugs

In the Philippines, medicines are 3.4 percent to 184 percent higher than the international reference index. For example, a 250 milligram Amoxycillin costs $9 in Indonesia, $8 in Nepal, $5 in Pakistan and $22 in the Philippines. Erythromycin costs $12 in India, $5 in Pakistan and $22 in the Philippines.

Getting Twisted with a Question

Monday
Sep 3,2007

Isinuksok nga nila yung bago kong brain through my nostrils dahil ayokong magkaroon ng surgical scars sa aking mukha. Basahin ang kabuuan.

[I don’t know. Maybe it’s the way I feel when being told of that so I don’t do it to others but I think it’s unethical to greet a person negatively. Everybody’s been there. You’re on a date, so you wear your nice suit/dress, you get your hair done, and you even went to the spa – so you feel you look stunningly awesome. Then by the time you meet up with your date he/she just suddenly blurted out, “I didn’t really notice this before but you have close similarities with Carrot Top.”]
