Prayers and Health

Saturday
Sep 9,2006

I found myself in a tunnel again the other day (Thursday) but thankfully, as always, God was with me.

H had left for the early morning flight for business down South and the kids where in school when I noticed that I had some minor bleeding goin on. Now, I had not had any since Sunday so this was literally a red flag for me. This was not unusual though because it had happenned to me twice before when I had P and L. However, having just been through an ectopic, it was already becoming quite traumatizing.

Double standard

Saturday

I believe it is totally unfair for hospitals not to accept Davao nurses from Batch 2006 simply because some crooks leaked exam questions in Manila and certain areas in Luzon.

The sonogram was just the start of a long day’s journey into night – perhaps, the longest night of all my 41 years. From Dr. Pangan’s clinic, we called my OB, Dr. Prudence Aquino, who then directed me to have a Beta HcG blood test done to confirm pregnancy. Since we were on the way home, she asked us to proceed to Medical City which was much closer to our house. continue here

A week ago today I was in a tremendous amount of pain. Little was I to know then that my life could have ended in that instant. But God is faithful and His hand was and is upon me.

Last Sunday, August 27 I was rushed to the hospital for an emergency laparascopy due to an ectopic pregnancy. For weeks now, if you have been reading my blog entries, I had been complainingof an unusual pain in my lower right side.

What’s Your Frequency, Kenneth?

By doing the test, I learned that my frequency threshold is 20,000 Hz.

How about you?

Take the test and find out.

Hangovers

Friday
Aug 18,2006

You wouldn’t want pure beer to come out of (and consequently burn) your urethras, so I believe that keeping yourself hydrated during a binge should already be a given. This would certainly aid you in peeing out the Jesus Juice without a snag. Mr. Fritz also suggested at the forums that “a bottle of Gatorade before passing out on your bed would prevent a hangover.” He adds: “It has some shit that replaces the liquid and ions you lost in the process. Proven and tested by some hardass alcoholic friends.”

I’ve heard from the rest of the guys that he’s like the Buddha of drinking or something, so we better believe what he says. Or else.

After the fog…

Tuesday
Aug 15,2006

In the midst of a great challenge one feels like walking through a thick fog where the road ahead is strange and uncertain.

In November last year, that’s exactly what my life felt like when I was vaccilating on whether to leave my job in the health publishing world. I hemmed and hawed until my body became so sick continue reading

In The Beginning

Monday
Aug 14,2006

In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth and populated the Earth with broccoli, cauliflower and spinach, green and yellow and red vegetables of all kinds, so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives.

Then using God’s great gifts, Satan created Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream and Krispy Creme Donuts. And Satan said, “You want chocolate with that?” And Man said, “Yes!” and Woman said, “and as long as you’re at it, add some sprinkles.” And they gained 10 pounds. And Satan smiled.

They used pregnant lab mice and exposed the embryos, or baby mice inside, to high doses of ultrasound at long periods of time. The results were quite disturbing as it turned out that the ultrasound had disrupted the embryo’s brain development and caused some abnormalities. More studies are needed to confirm or know if the same thing could happen to human embryos. So far, there has been no documented case of using ultrasound as having bad effects on human embryos. Still, the study is just a reminder that every medical tool or technique should be used responsibly and with great care.

Meanwhile, the most recent research news I’ve come across about the good medical use of the substance is a study that “Found Nicotine To Protect Against Parkinson’s-like Brain Damage.”

Don’t rejoice yet and start puffing tobaccos, cigars and cigarettes because smoking is still dangerous to your health as illustrated by Jam in Filipino Health Issues and Problems.

Diethanolamine – quick infos

Saturday
Aug 5,2006

Here in the Philippines, Diethanolamine or DEA can be found in cosmetic products and is used as sunscreen agents. Meaning, if your shampoo or any other cosmetic product is labeled “with UV protection” or something similar, it contains DEA specifically Diethanolamine methoxycinnamate (DEA methoxycinnamate).

You should also read the labels and ingredients lists of any cosmetic product or any other product for that matter, before buying them. Don’t be shy or afraid of asking questions about health risks or other related information about the product to the sales person or dealer. Better yet, write, e-mail, call or look up the manufacturer’s website for more information or to send your concerns, it is your right to be protected as consumers, after all it is your money and health we’re dealing with.

Interesting and quite scary isn’t it? Most of the shampoos we use everyday contains a substance that retards brain development in fetuses. Well, for one thing we boys are safe since we do not get pregnant but once I get married and start to plan on having kids, I’d be worried. Wouldn’t you?

I remember the advice given to me back in highschool by the school nurse. She said that daily use of shampoo should be stopped. Instead, use shampoo once every other day and when using shampoo, put some water on it before applying it on your hair to dilute a little. Too much shampoo get rids of the natural oil that our scalp produces which is good for our hair. For those who couldn’t go through a day without shampooing their hair, use a conditioner instead.

Issue #2: Smoking

Tuesday
Aug 1,2006

Current statistics say that about 60% of Filipino men smoke and more than half of Filipino households are not smoke-free. As many as 40% of Filipino adolescent boys smoke and mostly began in their teens. Every year, there are about 20,000 smoking-related deaths in the country. Many vendors of cigarettes are children. Sadly, there are no laws prohibiting minors from buying or selling cigarettes.

Effects of Smoking:

Cardiovascular Diseases: Recent statistical studies say that smoking is the most prevalent risk factor of cardiovascular diseases including heart attack and stroke among Filipinos.
