Not about the Babuyan Islands

Thursday
Jun 5,2008

But let’s not talk about the Babuyan trip because as the title suggest, this isn’t about the Babuyan islands. When the waiter finally served the food we ordered, it lead me to a question “Why doesn’t my food look like the one in the picture?”. My friend told me, “You don’t know what you are asking for”. I asked why? “You will die if you eat that” he said. Read more…

Truthfully, I am not an avid fan of Chinese cuisine. I cannot say it enough that my taste buds are tired of sesame oil, oyster sauce and soy sauce. But I live in a country where Chinese food is as staple as rice. But once in a while I chance upon a place that serves great tasting Chinese dishes. And I am a hypocrite if I do not admit that of all Chinese edible creations, dimsum is the best. It is also the easiest to imitate. Imagine all the stalls that sell siopao, siomai, sharks fin in all shapes and sizes.

Ginataang Kuhol

I had always thought that Kuhol (a.k.a escargot or brown snails) was an expensive dish and very hard to find. But despite that perception, I always welcomed when my mom served ginataang kuhol at our house. I did not have the icky reaction to that fact that it was a snail I was trying to pick out from the hard brown shell with a toothpick. Not only was my reaction surprising (I hate anything slimy and slithery a.k.a worms and slugs), my jaw dropped when I found out these little buggers cost about P10 to P20 a cup at the local market.

The easiest thing to do to kuhol is to cook and serve them with coconut milk. It has actually evolved into a famous dish served at places like Cabalen or Kamayan. Now you can have the same at home.

Anyone who likes caramel will also love dulce de leche. They have the same thick gooey consistency and tonsillitis sweet flavor. And that’s mostly why they are best served atop cakes, ice cream, or mixed with other ingredients as an enhancer to the overall flavor of a dessert or pastry. Imagine dulce de leche in your coffee… hmmm sort of like a restructured caramel macchiato.

The Philippines has always been a good place to start a food craze. Many restaurants and food establishment that start abroad often makes its way through to the malls and stores of Metro Manila. Often, these places customize their menu to cater to the Filipino palate. Take McDonald’s rice meals. There is no such thing in the US.

Such is the same for Roti Mum - the famous coffee bun from Singapore. I had the opportunity to fall in love with this coffee bun last year. A couple of months ago, I heard that they were now serving choco buns. Hmm… sounds yummy right. Unfortunately, I missed the launch of these chocolatey-ness which they offered for the christmas season. So when I found myself looking through the glass at the choco buns cooking inside Roti Mum Megamall, I did not even think twice and bought a box of assorted buns.

The Fish & Co Seafood restaurant is one of my favorite dining places in Makati. I accept that their prices are way beyond my daily budget (or even my weekly) but there are times when the craving for fish and chips justifies blowing your budget to smithereens. To satisfy my desire to eat fish and chips, I have devised a plan to convince a friend or even several friends to come and share the dining experience with me.

Our house always have loaves of bread in stock. My husband needs to have his daily “baon” of ham sandwich and I usually bring egg or tuna sandwich with me to the office. My kids also love cheez wiz on bread and if anyone of us at home feels hungry in between major meals, bread would be the first we look for.

Cello’s Doughnuts and Dips

You might shoot me if I admit that I have never heard of Cello’s doughnuts until now (ducking quickly). It was a good thing that their boxes were designed to be bright orange that when a colleague at work was carrying these orange boxes, I immediately asked what goodies were inside.

If there is one thing I try to avoid eating, it would be Chinese food. Why? Its because I grew up practically dining in noodles, chop suey, beef with broccoli, dimsum, steamed fish and ending always with one dessert almond jelly with lychee. Birthdays and special occasions were often celebrated at places called Jade Garden or San Jancito Panciteria. Back then, I always found the dishes bland and everything tasted alike.. they all tasted like sesame oil. It did not take me long to have taste buds stress.

Triple Chocolate Mousse

Sunday

ver since my constant eating companion went AWOL on me (wink!), I have not gone out to eat at all. I mostly stayed at my desk and befriended the trusty microwave at the office pantry.

I guess I missed a lot during those bagged lunch days because I saw some new additions to the classic confections menu when I recently visited. This brown polka dot mini cake beckoned to me from the glass counter. I stooped to get a closer look at the tag… which said triple chocolate mousse. And the exact same words escaped my lips. I could not help but order it even if I was really bent on rekindling my relationship with the mango torte.

Xtreme Food Trip

3/19/08

After the Anawangin Camp, we decided to stop over SBMA to have our lunch. We were supposed to have lunch in some generic place that serves typical Filipino food but we passed by this cafe and I remember hearing good feedback from those who tried eating here before.

Xtremely Xpresso Cafe is located near SBMA’s Boardwalk where Legenda Suites is. Their tarp outside says “It’s the biggest pizza you’ll ever see!”

I can’t really confirm if it really was the biggest pizza I ever saw. But sure, at 22 inches the Big Ben, which is their premiere pizza, is big enough.

The pizza, although big, has a thin crust which I like in pizzas. And it tastes good, even if I had to pick out the onions and green peppers. For some reason, I tolerate olives. Sarap, hehe. (P649)

We also had Fish and Chips (P160) which was okay and Meat Lasagne (P140) which had really delicious cheese/cream topped on it.

And then we had desserts. Banana Split (P150) and Cakes (P90 per slice).

The place is a cafe but we never got to order any coffee-based drinks. We were too full.

This place is really good. I’d give it a 4/5.
