Sinful Escape

Saturday
Dec 2,2006

It’s not as sinful as one might think, but since I desperately wanted to convince myself to start going on a diet, I committed a “crime” against myself… I “discovered” Penny Brown. I ordered a Smacker! and called it “Karen’s Sinful Escape”.

Pricewatch, Nov. 27

I really do not know how the government define “stable prices” to try to calm our nerves for the holiday shopping.

I see so many changes in the prices in our local market. For instance, here are the changes last week and two months ago:

This “slapping” incident would not likely happen at the City Council.

I guess we are more culturally and religiously sensitive than members of the House and/or their caterer in serving food during our official functions.

Go nuts over Krispy Kreme donuts

Donut eater

Okay, that was a lame title, don’t you agree? Well fuck you if you do. Anyway, when I got to the office a while ago (late as usual), I saw boxes upon boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts—okay, doughnuts—saying “hi” and “eat me” to me. Turned out the Philippine franchise gave our department like over 20 boxes of sample doughnuts (prototypes, if you will) just because we’re cute, suckers for freebies, hardworking (though always late for work), suckers for freebies, obnoxious, suckers for freebies, think we’re better than everyone else, suckers for freebies, the best, and overall, we rock their world. And suckers for freebies.

Can’t think if a witty come-on, but click here, anyway.

My hubby’s ultimate favorite is the Bolognese pasta. I myself am a pasta lover. I can eat pasta the whole day and I would not complain. And of course my 3-yr old loves the fast-food spaghetti (like most kids his age). So it is no wonder that we frequent Italian restaurants or pasta places just to get the chance to try out their fare.

One time in QC, having just brought my sister back to her apartment, we chanced upon this spaghetti place at the end of Sgt. Esguerra. Since we were both hungry, we decided to stop and eat. I was not really concerned about eating at a new place as I always see the restaurant parking packed with cars everytime I happen to pass by. This indicates that something about the place must be good…… Discover more…..

The Family Code clearly provides that a court declaration of presumptive death of a spouse is indispensable before the other spouse may marry again. Failure to comply with this requirement results not only in a void second marriage, but also opens the guilty spouse to a criminal charge of bigamy. Read the entire article here.

Quiapo Lumpia_senor enrique

This popular lumpia house started as a kiosk within the old Globe Theater where it also got its name. Its initial loyal customers were the moviegoers; followed by ardent shoppers of the various stores at Raon Street; and then the devotees of the Quiapo Church. And even when Globe Theater has long since closed its doors for good, the customers kept coming back for the lumpia, which has since moved from a kiosk to a narrow area right next to where the entrance to the cinema used to be. During the feast of the Black Nazarene, the restaurant would open at two o’clock in the morning to serve the beginning of a swelling number of pilgrims arriving at that time. According to Jenny, the daughter of the owner, quite a number of movie stars are also regular customers and would stop by every now and then.

Dumplings and Pork Chops

tasty porkchops_senor enrique

I’ve passed by this restaurant in Ongpin right across from Binondo Church so many times but never once felt compelled enough to go in and check out what they have to offer. It must have been its name, Tasty Dumplings, which turned me off about it; reminds me of some eateries I’ve been to back in New York and New Jersey named Good Food Diner, Delicious Bread Bakery, and Sumptuous Soup Kitchen. Oftentimes, eateries with such self-affirmation barely live up to their names.

However, after reading what Ladybug had to say about its pork chops, I finally went in one day to try it for myself; it was, in fact, really tasty. I had gone back a couple of times since then with friends in tow who appreciate this kind of meals. For eighty-five pesos, you get a piece of pork chop, rice, a small bowl of broth and some cabbage, which I usually mix with my rice. Everything is tasty, indeed. I also noticed that most people who come in usually order the pork chop.

Chicken at Savory’s

Savory_senorenrique

Still at the foot of Jones Bridge at the tip of Escolta, Savory Restaurant is one of the few remaining Chinese restaurants in the Sta. Cruz area that was once as popular as Max’s and Aristocrat. I had lunch there the other day and ordered Chicken Rice, which is a combination plate consisting of a quarter piece of chicken, fried egg, a cup of fried rice, and a generous serving of their famous chicken gravy. It costs about a hundred pesos.

Myron’s Pannacotta at the Powerplant

Thursday

One of L’s favorite foods of all time is pannacotta. He was drooling over the Vanilla Bean Pannacotta served at a family lunch one afternoon at Myron’s, a steak and seafood place over at the Powerplant Mall in Rockwell. Myron’s is owned by a childhood friend, Mon Eugenio, who seems to have a golden touch for the restaurant business…click here to view Myron’s delicious foodies

Where’s my beer belly?

Saturday
Oct 21,2006

If only algebra were this easy and fun I said to myself back then. Then again at least I can possibly master algebra as I was told and soon realised that no man – or woman – has ever beaten San Miguel (the popular beer and gin brand in the Philippines) and mean no one. I’ve seen the toughest of men, fell down on their knees, break down in tears or swear they had the power to fly after a bottle or two. But what the heck right? As long as you’re sharing a case or a few cans with your closest friends, it doesn’t matter if one may loose his car keys or reveal his deepest secrets, it may knock everyone out, what’s important is that the beer was plentiful and stories colorful.

I had my grocery last tuesday for a two-week’s meal. I barged in at Shopwise to finally meet the greens, since the supermarket nearby my place always doesn’t have any considerably “fresh” available.

mind you, these aren’t the greens that I shopped.

Esplanade Roof

I wanted to continue on the blow-by-blow account of my day at Singapore, but I also kind of wanted to fast track it a little just to end the series. Taking off from Little India I headed to Orchard Road, Singapore’s famous shopping district to beat the afternoon heat. I checked out Kinokonuya Bookstore to pass time and later, ate one of those Waffle Ice Creams at the streets.

Chinatown foodstuffs_senor enrique

Besides the daily grind of commerce, food is one of the main attractions of Chinatown.

I heard about some of its good restaurants such as the Lido along Alonzo Street; the original Lingnam Restaurant known for its fresh noodles; and the eateries along the estero such as Grand House that people rave about.

And for some quick meals Chinatown offers the original Mey Lin along Carvajal Street, Shin Tong Yon on Benavidez Street, and Ha Yuan Restaurant on Masangkay Street.

Over at Quintin Paredes Street there are the Golden Palace, Ocean Dragon and Dragon Seed. For afternoon tea and dimsum, some old-timers prefer the Wah Yuen Restaurant along Escolta Street. I was also told about other fine restaurants for lauriat dining such as the Royal Garden and Green Lake for seafood; Chuan Kee for its five treasure soup; and of course, The President Restaurant.

Breakfast with the Vietnamese

Another thing I learned about the Vietnamese is that they are very lazy when in comes to breakfast. Our guide Lee Tien, told us that most of them after waking up and before going to work usually just stops by at the nearest corner food stall and eat a quick breakfast.
