Patriotism and Nationalism in MMOGs

Thursday
Jul 13,2006

The CJK Bloc (China-Japan-Korea) is well known for their patriotism, love of each other as well as hatred of each other for countless of reasons. Even in-game, wars errupts based on their nationalities and patriotism and nationlism are so strong. Richard Garriott himself mentioned this years ago during an interview when he studied the Asian MMOG market, then only Lineage 1.

Cold Fusion and the Future

Wednesday
Jul 12,2006

The Philippines, being an oil-importing country, falls prey to OPEC and the ever escalating price of world crude oil and intermediately: gasoline.

To become not dependent on oil, we need viable, renewable, and sustainable alternative energy sources. While local celebrities have started an advocacy called 10 by 2010, calling for the enhancement of existing hydro, geothermal, solar, and wind to account for 10% of the country’s energy sources, the massive capitalization, machinery, and implementation of these sources renders the country virtually unprepared for petrocollapse.

There is a two-pronged solution: culture change and cold fusion. Read more…

I ask my students, now ok, so what nationality do you want to be? They want to be British or Canadians. Many want to be French. Now those seem to be a proud people. And they are. Or, they market themselves as such. The French are a proud people. But what most of us don’t realize is that this pride has taken hundreds of years in the making.

The Northrail Project – much criticized – has caused the displacement of thousands of families. This has an unfortunate effect that no one seems to have commented on just yet: these families will be moving into new territorial jurisdictions where they aren’t registered to vote.

Thanks to some alert COMELEC officers, this problem has been spotted and things are moving very quickly to address the situation. COMELEC field officials in Bulacan (Region III) are cooperating with the COMELEC Education and Information Department (EID) to conduct an intensive information drive to remind these displaced families that they have to file applications for the transfer of registration from their old to their new places of residence.

Back when I was still working for the Senate Committee on Energy, it was around the early half of 2005. The issue on the sale of Masinloc Power Plant in Zambales exploded when the winning bidder, YNN Pacific Consortium, was found out to be under-capitalize, no experience in power industry, incorporated only around 4 months before the bidding, and according to Joker Arroyo then, to specific office (the company staying in the listed address in SEC was a manpower services office). Lost in transition

Monday
Jul 10,2006

The transition council is neither an esoteric political proposal nor a novel concept which should surprise everyone. Last year, it was THE alternative to Gloria Arroyo’s fake government which was acceptable to major political groups. It was the subject of numerous debates in media and in different assemblies. Pamphlets were distributed to inform the public why the transition council will work better for the country.

Her parliament

Monday
Jul 10,2006

Because the Malacanang occupant cannot hope to have her “parliament” this month with the derailing of the Chacha Express, the next best thing for her is to pack her cabinet with members of Congress.

That is to continue her delusion.

The list is getting longer.

Out of Country, Out of Mind?

Saturday

Tuason is absolutely right about the chilling effect of the distances that some Filipinos need to travel just to exercise their right to vote; He may also be right about overseas filipinos balking at the thought of having to sign a return affidavit; I’m not quite sure what he means when he talks about “attitude and perception hampering registration efforts;” and I think he forgot to say: ‘the OAV law sucks!;’but when he says “apathy,” I have to say I understand his frustration, even though I think he’s got it wrong.

Its not that overseas Filipinos don’t care – half-an-hour’s surfing on the internet will reveal a terrifically vibrant blogging community of overseas Filipinos, all of whom obviously care – the problem is that many are disgruntled with the politics of their homeland.

Going to war for aid

Friday
Jul 7,2006

Here we go again.

Licking the ass of Uncle Sam.

During the events leading to the Iraq War, the Philippines was one of the earliest to enlist in the Coalition of the Willing. The Filipinos were not at war with the Iraqis, nor the Philippines a party to the conflict in the Middle East. Nevertheless, the Arroyo government committed the entire nation in this totally unjustified war.

The Ombudsman simply set out to provide the “factual basis” for the SC’s earlier conclusion that – despite the Court’s careful legalese – criminal liability existed; it never really wanted to ferret out the truth. The truth, to quote Al Gore, would have been inconvenient.

But why does the Court have to rely on the Ombudsman to prove that criminal liability did exist? The simple answer is that the SC couldn’t do it.

Why not?

The tribes of corruption: the fraternities, the labor unions, the Establishment, the Superstars…La Vida Lawyer

Tuesday
Jul 4,2006

With a vote of 9 pro-judges against 5 dissenters (with one abstaining), this reflects the high level of maturity of our Supreme Court system for it only upholds one’s freedom of religion. It’s only because our SC judges are wise enough to realize that a democracy like ours should never be retrofitted with narrow and baseless Christian mores.

Last week, we had a conversation with the building architect and building administrator of one of the towering buildings in Makati City. The main topic of the conversation was the current technologies in the solar energy conversion to electricity but the course of the discussion shifted on the power industry and the effect of the establishment of electricity market to them, bulk consumers. Manny won; Money lost

Tuesday
Jul 4,2006

Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao won the bout all right. But many Filipinos lost Money in the fight.

Confident that their ring idol would KO Mexican Oscar Larios, many wagered that the match would not last ten or even six rounds.

I know two city officials who lost not just their wallets, but shirts too.
