A separate report on “Immigration Judges” reveals that of 1,678 Filipinos who sought asylum in the United States and whose cases were decided from 1994-1999, 91.1 percent were denied. Of the 631 asylum cases involving Filipinos where decisions were handed down from 2000-2005, 75.8 percent were rejected. More

raining cats and dogs

Frequent storms are really a pain in the ass nowadays. The monsoon rains they bring never stop pouring causing destructive floods, and I hate having my shoes all soaked wet everytime I get out of the house. I’m getting the feeling that a lot of Filipinos don’t care if it’s caused by our fast deteriorating global climate, or maybe they consider it as just a myth or a media propaganda. I also get a feeling that, when an expert speaks of environment, all they could think of are the forest and the landslides on elevated portions of land, nothing to be worried about if they live in a city or the metropolis. Maybe when the entire Metro Manila becomes a swampy region like that of Malabon will they only start to care about their carbon contributions to global warming. Or maybe they’ll just blame the government for not informing them earlier.

Bridge_River_Youth_senor enrique

A clear and breezy afternoon along the north promenade of the Pasig River is the perfect weather for some college students from nearby schools to enjoy their lunch break.

At the background is Jones Bridge. It was named for William Atkinson Jones, a member of the U.S. Congress and chairman of the Insular Affairs Committee who sponsored the Philippine Autonomy Act in 1916. Jones Bridge was once hailed as Manila’s queen of the bridges until it fell into neglect and disrepair in the 1980s. However, some partial restoration has preserved the elegance of its neoclassical architecture.

Pasig River is a 10-mile course that flows from the north side of Laguna Bay and westward into the salt water of Manila Bay. Laguna Bay is the world’s largest fresh water inland lakes with its own islands and tributaries.

Read the complete entry and find out what this bridge and river may or may not have in common with our youth.

Liquid Bombs – How and Why?

Friday
Aug 11,2006

Here at work the topic of conversation revolves around yesterday’s foiled attemp to bomb 10 planes out of the U.K. bound for the United States. Terror takes on an even more evil face and the latest threat poses a nightmare to airports all over They foiled it here first in Manila, read on…

Nothing, it’s just some silly thought I have for the war going on in the Middle East. When bombs rain around you, I just can’t imagine what you’ll be thinking or where you’ll hide since concrete can’t even save your life. What’s your best defense then? Pray? Have your government beg for the lives of its countrymen, it’s an option. But what if there would still be casualties after the begging? Beg, again, for the lives of the remaining survivors. It’s all we can do, I guess?

Time for a Charter Change?

Tuesday
Aug 8,2006

Once again, me and my colleagues discussed about politics and the Philippine 1987 Constitution. I am surprised however that many of those who were once not in favor of a charter change or chacha are now in favor of it. The latest social survey is indeed correct, the number of Filipinos now favoring chacha is growing.

Gloria and Cory

Monday
Aug 7,2006

Gloria Arroyo is not afraid that she will suffer the same fate of Marcos. On the contrary, she is inspired by Cory Aquino’s ploy: implement total war and violate human rights but still manage to be known as peace advocate and moral leader in the end.

When Cheese Escudero thinks out loud, it’s time for the country to take cover. Escudero proposes that “subjects like trigonometry, calculus, geometry, and algebra, should be taught only in college or as high school electives since these are not relevant to the everyday life of Filipinos.”

Davao OFWs in Lebanon

Thursday
Aug 3,2006

We know that Davao is one of the country’s largest sources of overseas contract workers (OFW). It is surprising for me therefore to learn that there were only 204 Davaoenos of the estimated 30,000 Filipinos in war-ravaged Lebanon.
