lumantao.comI have just launched a new website for my accounting practice and consultancy. As mentioned in the website, my services will be geared towards small and medium enterprises, or SMEs, as well as online or internet ventures in the Philippines.

I believe that, unlike large companies which have huge accounting departments with ready access to established accounting and auditing firms, SMEs usually make do with the crudest record-keeping by its owners and managers as source of financial information.

The following is an excerpt:

This morning, I finished half of a new feature story that I was planning on posting tonight. It was supposed to be about the characteristics of Jumpers (who are special human beings capable of doing special (what else?) things like jumping through space and landing anywhere in the world) compared to those of Bloggers. Basically, I wanted to draw comparisons between the two, and in the end say that although Jumpers are cool because of their powers, Bloggers can be cool too. You just have to look at things from the right perspective.

So anyway, like I said earlier, I had already finished half of that feature document, and successfully saved its draft in the memory card of my Nokia E50. You see, I don’t yet have a computer of my own, and my smart phone is the only thing that I can use as a compromise. I can read and write common documents on it, which is mostly all that a Blogger like myself should need anyway.

I would’ve already posted that darned Jumper article here right now, but unfortunately, I no longer have the draft with me. Why? Because I no longer have my memory card with me. Why? Because I no longer have my Nokia E50. And why? Because I pawned it earlier this afternoon for some lunch money.

So here I am, broke to the bone in a computer shop, living off debt money, faith and a few of my principles, trying to look for a subject that I could write about as a compromise for that missing Jumper article. I could try and recall it as hard as I could from memory, and just rewrite the whole thing as best as I can, but I feel it would just be a waste of my time. I believe that no problem should ever be solved twice. And writing that article again would become that — overkill.

So what now? Certainly I can’t just sit here and let my time pass by. I’m paying for my Internet access by the minute, after all. And if time is gold, my online time is gold-plated gold. I can’t waste any. That’s why I’m determined to make my online time today useful, just like I always do. Or try to do anyway.

It’s currently the hottest story at TechMeme. The New York Times reports that “In Web World of 24/7 Stress, Writers Blog Till They Drop“. Drop dead, that is. They consider professional blogging a “digital-era sweatshop”, referring to a factory where its workers are sorely underpaid and unprotected.

But I have to say that NYT is going somewhere with its term, sweatshop.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TRAINING

Wednesday
Mar 26,2008

The Blue Manila cadets of 2007 went through a week’s intensive training on English communication skills from July 9-13, 2007. The course: Effective Maritime Personality through English Proficiency.

Like in its previous English trainings, Blue Manila commissioned the services of Advanced Speech and Academic Professionals Inc. The Makati-based company assessed and trained the participants on the dynamics of English, how best to apply the language to Maritime situations, and how to become more familiar with its literal and idiomatic meanings.

The engine and deck cadets showed enthusiasm and interest during the sessions. They were particularly interested in the job-interview practice. Here, ASAP invited guest interviewers to measure the speaking skills of the cadets. They were graded according the presentation of their answers as well as the delivery and audibility with which they answered. ASAP uses internationally recognized references such as The European Framework of Reference for Languages to stratify the level of its trainees and give the appropriate intervention for each.

Maritime professionals are required to communicate clearly and give accurate information to seafarers worldwide. This was the guiding thought that inspired the ASAP trainers in handling the cadets’ training.

Blue Manila, through its management fully supports the continued training and education of its people. The Maritime industry continues to evolve and with it, so should its people. There’s a competitive world out there and Blue Manila is equal to the challenge. see there site @  www.bluemanila.com

It was good while it lasted. I appreciate everything you’ve done for me, and I’m sure the feeling is mutual. Things were great for a while and you offered me a life of excitement at some point. But we both know it won’t last forever. Relationships like this, especially for a young person like me, aren’t meant to endure forever. 5 years maybe at the most. Well for us, it was a 4-year-and-9-month itch that was waiting to be scratched.

Two days after finally deciding to leave my job at the call center, I haven’t even begun to process my separation papers or given a resignation letter. I’m waiting for a call from my supervisors telling me the real status of my resignation as far as operations and HR is concerned. You see, the thing that happened is, there was a company policy that states if an employee who resigns should ever want the option of being able to return to the company whenever he/ she pleases, the said employee should render a full 30 days of working on the floor one last time, starting from the date the resignation is filed. I told my superiors that I wouldn’t be able to complete a full 30 days but they were kind enough and offered me the option of doing at least 15 days instead. That’s not been finalized though, as 30 days is really the rule. Right now I’m waiting for them to give me a call so I can finally end my stint there officially and really say I’ve resigned to become a full time blogger.

I know a lot of nursing graduates are waiting for this since my last post about the June 2007 Nursing Licensure Exam. The exam result was made available today at the Philippine Daily Inquirer and the PRC website. The PRC official website went down a couple of hours ago as a result of nursing students, friends and family members trying to get the exam result.

Again, the Philippine Nursing exam results now for December 2007 examiners is available for download. As always, the files are in PDF, so you need to download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader first. I also made it available in MS Word format.

Mad Skillz

job huntIn the past few weeks, I have been on the hunt for a new job. It was an enlightening experience, really. I got to use a lot of the stuff I’ve been writing about in Bum No More. I got the chance to look back into my professional career (all two years of it!) and build a fairly attractive resume with surprisingly little padding. I also realized that I have several sets of skills that I can use to market myself, much like a young hooker after her first night of debauchery.

The skill I really want to develop right now is creative/content writing. It’s my passion ever since I discovered I suck at music and art. Writing is where I least suck, so what I really want to improve on is being a wordsmith. Drastically.

Potential Employer #1: Please write something about Makati.

Baddie: My pleasure.

Writers and Bad Attitude Part I: An Axe to Grind

Wednesday
Feb 6,2008

Television writers and bad attitude come together like ugly white tourists and Asian prostitutes. I honestly don’t know of any writer worth admiring who hasn’t got one at some degree (a bad attitude, not a prostitute… most employed television writers don’t have the time to fraternize with after-hours merchandize). Attitude comes with the package, methinks. Any writer worth his salt has raw nerve-endings instead of skin and can quickly smell the manure they throw around the room like effing wallpaper. That’s where the attitude comes from, dear brethren in the craft.

Attitude. Get it here.

MESSGAE

·                    The opposition groups issued a manifesto entitled “HATAK” and “HATOL” – the former supports Gen Esperon while the latter rejects PGMA… both of which are initiated by the anti-administration and aimed in dividing national unity…

·                    A manifesto entitled “HATAK” wants Gen Esperon to be the head of State while a manifesto “Hatol” wants PGMA to be removed from her position… its quite obvious that the perpetrators are desperate for military support to overthrow the President…

·                    OPLAN 4G which, was formulated by the Magdalo group  is underway… they are now in the part of insinuating civil disobedience…

·                    OPLAN 4G is a four-phase scheme intended to oust the President… insinuating the public through a chaotic atmosphere, promoting civil disobedience, withdrawal of support and taking over with the help of critical mass… such plot is currently in effect…

·                    The series of fire that gutted out several areas in Metro Manila are all part of OPLAN 4G… it was intended to insinuate the victims in going against the present administration for their misery…

·                    Destabilizers are pushing to the edge as to the extent of setting off the fires that left several families homeless… with this; they can easily make out misery and instill a chaotic environment enough for public outrage…

·                    A desperate attempt of  destabilizers to create chaos and go against the government is to hire arsonists to smolder certain squatter’s area in Metro
Manila… this is quite evident in the continual fire that hit slum areas…

·                    Serge Osmeña engineered Pulse Asia’s fabricated result of the most corrupt President… He allied himself with political opposition, destabilizers and leftist groups so as to oust PGMA before 2010…

·                    18 months starting this January is the most crucial period for destabilizers… the span of time is the only opportunity they have to oust PGMA, since any time longer than that, comes the 2010 election fever…

·                    OPLANs Hackle, Liras, Roundhead,
Jericho and 4G are all Magdalo schemes to oust the President… Oplan 4G is still underway for leftist groups and power grabbers are riding with the rogue soldiers…

·                    OPLAN Jericho, known as the Manila Peninsula incident was designed to draw supporters from all sectors… however, it was in vain since people are not anymore inclined in believing the Trillanes et al…

·                    The fabricated result of Pulse Asia’s “most corrupt” President is part of OPLAN 4G… to insinuate public outrage and eventually civil disobedience…

I’ll assume you are between 27 and 33 years old, my specific target reader for this post. Then, I’ll correctly assume your parents are baby-boomers and were in professions such as architects, teachers, doctors, lawyers, corporate managers and such. In your earliest years, they told you that you can be anything you want and the most important thing is to be happy. In your grade school and high school years, they told you to study hard, get good grades and it will all pay off.

In college, they encouraged you to get into computer, engineering or management courses. They might have nervously smiled if you took history, writing or art related courses. Now that you are working, they ask if you have your insurances covered and they tell you they have saved up for your MBA. Sometimes they ask you to check their email. Particularly your father, once in awhile, gives you “jewels of wisdom” when you ask for career advice but it seems he is on autopilot and resumes to read the newspaper.

You have to understand that your parents’ world and the times they grew up in are very, very, very different from ours. They grew up with the themes of security, simplicity, hope and progress. On the other hand, we started our careers in the world of Internet, Google, Friendster, outsourcing and call centers, DVDs, MP3s, and cellphones all of which were non-existent in their time.

I was blown away when Anthony Robbins in one of his lectures, succinctly characterizes our time – the 21st century – as the age of “fast and discontinuous change.” Of course there has always been change, but not as fast now and it was not discontinuous for change then did not eliminate and create jobs, processes, industries, and products overnight. Discontinuous means you cannot logically predict what will come next.

What’s more is that this fast and discontinuous change is not temporary or an adjustment that will soon plateau; it will be the norm.
