St. Mark unlike Matthew and Luke just states blandly that Jesus was tempted by Satan. He doesn’t say anything more. Why? Perhaps, he was more interested in the meaning of Jesus being tempted rather than what the temptation was all about. What then was the meaning then of Jesus being tempted? (1 Lent – B)
Which is easier to say: Your sins are forgiven or stand up and walk.” Indeed, which is easier to say? If you were an ordinary Jew and you were before a crowd and you know that among the crowd were scribes, it would not be easy to say “Your sins are forgiven.” Why? Because you would be guilty of blasphemy and the penalty was death by stoning. But was Jesus an ordinary Jew? (7th Sunday in Ordinary Time – B)
