Being the busy bees that my hubby and I are, there isn’t always time to pack up and drive to someplace nice so we could just unwind and relax. However, about an hour away from the city, (at least without heavy traffic and all that) there lies Tagaytay, a small town frequently visited by those longing for some cool air and warm meals.

CLIMATE ACTION NOW

Rich countries must sign a global deal in Copenhagen to cut their carbon emissions and to promise to give $50 billion a year for people to adapt to the effects of climate change.

TCK TCK TCK

Tck Tck Tck is an unprecedented global alliance of non-government organizations, trade unions, faith groups and people like you—all calling for an ambitious, fair and binding climate change agreement.

This global alliance has come together to ensure a fair, ambitious, and binding agreement from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, a meeting of world governments in Copenhagen, Denmark.

On December 7-18, representatives of 192 nations will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark for the United Nations Conference of the Parties. The meeting is expected to draft and ratify a new treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which is due to expire in 2012. The outcome of these talks will determine the future of our planet.

To raise awareness of the importance of this historic meeting—and spell out the kind of treaty the group needs to create—the Tck Tck Tck campaign is uniting the voices of millions across the globe. Our ultimate goal: an fair, ambitious and binding international agreement that reflects the latest science on climate change.

Tck Tck Tck is intended to signal that “time is running out.” The science is clear that if we do not act immediately to drastically reduce the emissions that cause global warming, then we will condemn hundreds of millions of people to a life of misery, homelessness, or worse. Copenhagen stands as our single greatest opportunity to reverse climate change. Reaching agreement on a strong deal in Copenhagen is urgent; the impacts of climate change are already being felt around the world. There is still time to build a greener, safer world but the clock is ticking. We can do it, and we must do it.

TIK TOK TIK TOK

For Asia and the Philippines, the Tck Tck Tck branding was localized into Tik Tok Tik Tok to appeal to the region’s culture and language. Essentially, Tik Tok Tik Tok carries the same message as the international campaign calling for climate action.

LOREN’S ON CLIMATE CHANGE ADVOCACY

Wednesday
Dec 2,2009

Long before Ondoy and Pepeng hit the country, I had been asking myself are the Filipinos aware of global warming and its effect, climate change. I have always considered this environmental problem the biggest threat to humanity.

What have the advisers on global warming and climate change not done anything to make people more aware of the problem?

This is why I admire Senator Loren Legarda, the vice presidential candidate of former Senate President Manny Villar of the Nacionalista Party. Legarda has taken the world stage on climate change, even as she pursues other advocacies like peace, education, health, women and children’s issues and small businesses.

Legarda has the courage to take on an issue that strikes deep into the heart of poverty. After all, it is the poor who are most vulnerable to climate disturbances like typhoons, floods, mudslides and landslides, destruction of infrastructure and damage to agriculture.

Indeed, this issue affects not only the present generation but succeeding ones.

Mar Roxas Mahilig Mamulitika

Mar Roxas

Senator Loren Legarda Speech on Philippine Forest

Ladies and gentlemen, officers and members of the Society of Filipino Foresters, Incorporated, my partners in environmental protection, a pleasant day to all of you.

Across the years, Philippine forests continuously declined in physical and environmental terms. Forest land area alarmingly went down from 36.3 percent or more than one-third of the country’s land area in 1970 to 18 percent in 2001. Evidently, most of our country’s once rich forests are now gone.

This is tragic because forests are indispensable in the overall ecological balance of the world by acting as a home for biodiversity and by protecting vital water and soil resources. Also, forests serve as major carbon sinks that absorb great quantities of carbon dioxide that otherwise would add to the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming and rapid climate change.

Recent events have shown us the grim scenario of climate change impact. The intense and record-high rainfall by Ondoy, Pepeng and Santi, as well as the consequent fatalities and damages have shown us that the price we pay for denuding our forests and abusing the environment is well beyond our means.

It is therefore an imperative for us to do everything in our power to protect the forests left for our children and for humanity. It is an uphill climb but we must gather courage. We must pool in our knowledge, our skills, our commitment, and our passion. Essentially, we could find the know-how, the skills, and the passion among our foresters.

Our foresters are the ones who are literally “on the ground” in protecting our forests from abuse and misuse. They are the foot soldiers. They are our forests’ caretakers. And incident to their vocation, foresters are also our partners in reducing poverty in the rural areas. Indeed, many are already rising to the challenge, and our gathering here today is a testament to this.

Let me reiterate that forest protection, like environmental protection, is not its own end. As always, the strong environmental thrust of my advocacy is part of my larger plan and vision of eradicating poverty in the grassroots. Taking care of our forests not only responds to climate change and other environmental concerns but also deals with persistent local poverty because forests are a vital part of the development in the rural areas. I envision every part of the country, every nook and cranny, to be planted with trees so as to be eventually capable of developing to their fullest potential.

The recently passed Climate Change Act gives a window of opportunity for us to respond to the challenges of climate change in a comprehensive manner. As the principal author and sponsor of the law, I set out to give more stakeholders and communities greater responsibility and opportunity to initiate programs in their respective areas of responsibility that are aligned to the national and global goal of sustainable development.

This legislation mandates the creation of a Climate Change Commission which will create an enabling environment for multi-stakeholder participation. Moreover, it will provide technical and financial support to local research and development programs and projects in vulnerable communities. Financial packages for climate change related projects will be provided by government financial institutions.

Given the global condition of the environment, foresters are becoming more important in the future. Rest assured that my advocacy of tree-growing and rejuvenating our forests has not been a case of missing the foresters for the trees. You have my ears in matters of environmental protection and so feel free to tell me your concerns. We will find ways to address them.

For me, I wish Loren for success in this coming election. IMO, We crucially need a leader that has a theme like this. I am very happy because it is concerning with Environmental Protection. We need a healthy environment to adapt to the diverse effects of climate change. Healthy Evironment makes the world safe for habitation, and Loren is the instrument for making our country a better and safe place.

Katulad halimbawa ng Anti Money Laundering Law (RA 9160), National Service Training Program (9163), Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act (RA 9165), and the Government Procurement Reform Act (9184), among others. Overseas Absentee Voting Act (RA 9189), Citizenship Retention and Reacquisition Act (RA 9225).

At ng June 30 bilang Spanish Friendship Day (RA 9187).

Villar – Loren Tandem

Senators Manuel Villar of the Nacionalista Party (NP) and Loren Legarda of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) yesterday formally announced their team-up for the 2010 elections.

Villar face the Filipino people and say that his choice for vice president was not motivated by political accommodation but by a common vision for the country,” Villar told a crowd of supporters at the historic Laurel House in Mandaluyong City.

He announcement ended months of speculation over Villar’s running mate. He formally introduced Legarda as a candidate who will work for the poor and the environment.

For my own opinion I think they are qualified for Presidency and Vice Presidency. I think Sen. Manny Villar has a wise decision to choose Sen. Loren Legarda as his Vice President. They call their tandem as “a convergence of platforms,” because they’ll have the same objectives and interests. I hope that they win and begin their partnership and to help our Filipino people, and protect our environment
Filipinos are looking forward to the 2010 elections because they desperately want change.

All night partying is a thing of the past for me. Now I prefer to either dine, chat, or mingle when going out with my husband or with friends. Most of the time, these affairs call for casual getups instead of the all out bling. So my wardrobe and make up stash has turned to more subdued, neutral, minimalist hues that I can use everyday at work and afterwards. That means no blues, greens or yellows on my makeup kit.
