Dear Ashley,Hi. Remember me? I’m Ade. Am I glad to find you here on Formspring! We met back in college. Remember the party that Lloyd threw? The one where Sheena ended up puking all over your dress? That’s the one I was talking about. I just want you to know that I spiked Sheena’s orange juice. Didn’t know she had a low alcohol tolerance. Sorry. Also, yeah, I know I had whiskey dick that night, and you promised to call me back once we’re sober but you never did. What the heck is up with that?

Kubiertos.com in partnership with Discovery Travel and Living is giving away 10 cookbooks by DTL’s famous chefs, Willie Harcourt-Cooze, Kylie Kwong, and David Rocco to 10 lucky readers of this blog. All you have to do is post a comment here about what you plan to do this year to make Christmas extra special. You can post as many ideas as you want as long as they’re unique. It would be understandable if the basic idea will become similar to others but the details should be uniquely your own. (Ex. Special Christmas dinner can be an idea of many people but you can make it unique by how you plan to do it or what dishes you plan to cook to make it special). The contest will run from December 13 to December 27.

Arnel Pineda is NOT Leaving Journey.

Is Arnel Pineda leaving Journey? I am very surprised to learn that this kind of rumor has been circulating the internet for sometime now. People who end up on the site come from search engines using the keywords: “Arnel Pineda leaving journey.” There is no news about it at all here in the United States. I can only infer that this type of fabrication could only come from malicious reporters in the Philippines who want to sell their fictional story to anyone who would buy it.

What should we do? It is like a moral imperative (or categorical imperative). Wikipedia states: “A moral imperative is a principle originating inside a person’s mind that compels that person to act. It is a kind of categorical imperative, as defined by Immanuel Kant. Kant took the imperative to be a dictate of pure reason, in its practical aspect. Not following the moral law was seen to be self-defeating and thus contrary to reason. Later thinkers took the imperative to originate in conscience, as the divine voice speaking through the human spirit. The dictates of conscience are simply right and often resist further justification. Looked at another way, the experience of conscience is the basic experience of encountering the right.” John the Baptist was not a philosopher. His answer was both practical and to the point. What is Christmas?

Friday
Dec 11,2009

Christmas originated from the word “Christ’s mass“, a word of Catholic origin, meaning a special mass or a worship service for the birth of Christ.  To the Catholics, it still means this.  To the rest of the Western World it has come to mean something quite different. A mass called Misa de Gallo will be celebrated starting from 16th of December and ends on the 24th of December.  Also a mass called Misa de Aguinaldo will be celebrated on the 25th of December.

Christmas is a celebration of the feast of the birth of Jesus Christ, celebrated on December 25. It is a Christian celebration of the birth of the Son of God, the savior of all people.  With the birth of Jesus Christ, christianity begins; thus Christmas also celebrates the beginning of Christianity. “The date was chosen to counter the pagan festivities connected with the winter solstice; since 274, under the emperor Aurelian.  Rome had celebrated the feast of the “Invincible Sun” on December 25” (Grollier Encyclopedia, vol 4).

Christmas is considered as the longest celebration of the year starting as early as September and reaching its climax in December. As ber month approaches, people are usually busy preparing for material things such as christmas lights, nice and ostentatious decorations, giant christmas trees, christmas lanterns, loud music and over abundance of food. The event is generally a very important occasions for most families in the Philippines.  It is the time for reunion, gift-giving, exchanging cards, parties, feast and singing of Christmas carols.  Children ask gifts from their god parents or ninong and ninang. They are so excited to receive presents from them.

The activities usually done by most people are just the outward way of giving the meaning of Christmas.  Sometimes, children do not know and understand the significance of Christmas.  Health and Home The 2002 Book give the following activities that would help children better understand the meaning of Christmas.  First, Read the Christmas story in the Bible. The four gospels (Matthew, Mark Luke, and John) are the best source of facts about the birth of Jesus Christ. In the Christian story God descends to re-ascend.  He comes down; down from the height of absolute being into the time and space, down into humanity.  Second, Teach them familiar Christmas carols. Singing is one of the best ways to remember the Christmas story.  There are songs written to commemorate and proclaim Jesus like “Silent Night,” “Ó Come, All Ye Faithful,” “Away in a Manger,” and hundreds of others written throughout the centuries. Singing brings the truth in the level of feeling and emotion.  Children’s hearts can be touched by the soothing melodies of familiar carols. Third, Involve children in a Christmas play in  church. When I was in Grade 1, way back 1980 I could not forget our role playing in our school on the birth of Christ in a manger.  We were wearing the colorful costumes and using the appropriate props.  Likewise, children can learn and remember much from Christmas plays.  Their minds will be voluntarily drawn to the narrative.  Fourth, Watch a documented movie on the birth of Christ. There are plenty of materials on the topic. But parental guidance is still needed.  The parents should be ready to explain inquiries regarding Christ’s birth. Fifth, Explain the significance of the star, manger, three wise men, angels, shepherds, and Bethlehem to the birth of Christ. It is wrong to assume that  children will automatically grasp the significance of people, places, animals, and objects related to the first advent of Jesus.  Parents should explain that the star served as the guide that led the Magi into the presence of this noble Prince of Peace. Sixth, Share with the kids the joy of distributing gifts to the poor and less fortunate. Christmas is the time of giving- an antidote to human selfishness.  God exemplified genuine giving when He gave His Son to die for the unworthy people on earth.  Such gift can never be repaid!  Such is the message of the birth of Christ. Seventh, Visit grandparents and relatives. The fast-paced life today leaves almost no time for opportunity to visit loved ones.  Even children can get busy with studies.  Christmas is the time to visit with the grandparents, and relatives. The presence, hugs, and kisses of children bring joy to the grandparents.  Thus, children can see how Jesus visit to humans brought joy to lonely hearts.  Lastly, Find quiet moments with the family. Christmas is the time for reflection.  Amidst the hassle and bustle that have become all too familiar nowadays, commit your family to an hour of reflection on God’s blessings for the past year.   It is very important to help the kids realize how great a Gift was given on the first Christmas.

No matter how the people celebrated Christmas in many places of the world, the most important is to keep the spirit of Christmas  truly in our hearts.

A Backpacker’s Epiphany in KhaoSan Road

Khao San Road would probably be Bangkok’s answer to Champs Elysses of Paris. However, it’s not as grand as the latter, in fact Khao San is quite the opposite of Champs Elysses. It’s dirty, with narrow roads, packed with cheap hostels and mid-priced hotels and it’s full of street vendors peddling everything that they can sell to tourists and travelers alike.

I left my home around 4AM and took a taxi to EDSA Pasay. There’s a bus station there that goes to Clark Airport everyday. I can’t remember how much exactly I paid for the bus ride but it’s definitely not that much. For those who’re not familiar with Clark, it used to be a US base and now it’s a commercial airport for both passengers and cargoes. It serves budget airlines, perfect for cost conscious travelers and backpackers like you and me.

Talking to (a very cranky) Santa

“Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas! So, kid, what do you want to find in your stockings this holiday season? Come on and sit on my la-” the mall employee dressed as Santa abruptly stopped in the middle of his sentence as he looked up and saw that it was my turn. I was grinning enthusiastically as I waved at him.“Yo, yo, yo, dude. Stop. Stop it.” the Santa said. “Aren’t you… a little too old for this?”“What are you talking about?” I shot back. “I lined up in here fair and square! You can never be too old for Santa Claus!”“What the heck happened to your childhood, buddy? Everyone knows Santa Claus is-”“Fake? Dude, you’re going to ruin Christmas for these children. Tone it down a little.”Santa scratched his head quizzically and mumbled, “I swear there was a sign outside that said ‘For children up to age 13 only’ there. After that little runt tried to poop on my outfit the other day, I thought I’ve gotten the worst-”Little does this mall employee dressed as Santa know that this was actually my fifth attempt to line up at the “Tell Santa Your Wishes!” booth at this mall.

Any computer user knows how vital it is to have a backup of all our important computer files. Any computer user also knows that even with the risk of losing valuable data, half the time we are not backing up as we should. We have many excuses for it, the same excuses we use for leaving something undone or unfixed: procrastination, do not have the time, too taxing, time consuming, no extra storage available, etc.

When calamity strikes, when something hit us without warning, we are only left crying and hitting ourselves for not doing what we should have done in the first place.

Find out what to back up and where– the best solution…
