Until now, the government has not clarified whether it will dispense with the red tape that normally accompanies donations in kind: the last thing the country needs is a scandal associated with donated relief goods being impounded by the Bureau of Customs or taxed upon arrival.

I had already written about my own personal experience as I waited in agony for news of my mom and sister. Now I wanted to share a bit of what my family had to say. They were stranded on top of the roof of our family home for 2 nights as Typhoon Ondoy’s flood waters submerged the whole town of Cainta.
Please help the victims of Typhoon Ondoy. Here are some info on how you can help.
“Be it hereby resolved by the Philippine Senate, to enjoin all senators to allocate at least P1 million from their Priority Development Assistance Fund to aid victims of Ondoy,” according to Senate Resolution 1378 filed by Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago on Monday.

In her State of the Nation Address last July 27, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said: “As a country in the path of typhoons and the Pacific Rim of Fire, we must be prepared, as the latest technology permits, to anticipate natural calamities when that is possible; to extend immediate and effective relief when it is not.” She also asserted that the mapping of flood-and landslide-prone areas is “almost complete,” citing the improvement of “early warning, forecasting and monitoring systems” and the installation of flood-control infrastructure in areas of Luzon, including the Pasig and Marikina rivers.

I can now only write about this terrible calamity that has wreaked havoc on many Filipinos and their families. I personally am dealing with this tragedy as I await for the safety of my mom and sister who remain stranded at our family home in Cainta Rizal. The home that my siblings and I all grew up in has been overcome by a flash flood brought on by Typhoon Ondoy. Flood waters has caused many families living in Marikina, Cainta and Pasig to seek refuge on higher ground or on the roofs of their houses for fear of being carried away by the strong current. While I was miles away safe at my home, I connected to my sister through many text messages as we didn’t want to use up whatever life her battery had. But just after lunch, she called me crying trying to tell me that water was rising fast. She was mostly incoherent but I didn’t need to hear the words to understand what she was going through. I only had time to tell her “Don’t cry. Be strong. Go up to the roof now!”. That was the last I heard her voice.
