Artistic pretensions rock!
They had to do it.
One of the jurors in Cinemalaya Cinco had to grab the mic and say what was on everyone’s mind -
“Why wasn’t Engkwentro recognized?”
The juror said that the jurors decided to give an unprecendented, unofficial SPECIAL MENTION to Pepe Diokno for his intentions with his film Engkwentro – that at 21 years old – for someone to make a film like that – was a feat in itself.
Hey, I love the fact that Last Supper No.3 won – I laughed my heart out in the film – an as an aspiring observational stand-up comedian, it heartens me that people get it now.
But I think they should have given Engkwentro the Jury Prize – maybe it could have shared it with the other two?
I’m thinking that maybe, just maybe, the jurors were thinking:
“… Pepe Diokno is ONLY 21 years old, he’ll make more films, let’s give him time to … mature …”
Some questions:
- how many 21-year olds do you know would do a social commentary on the vigilante death squads in the South?
- how many 21-year olds would try to do those 30-minute (“one take”) shots?
- how many 21-year olds would try to re-create the whole sound (yes, it wasn’t “live sound …) for his film
- how many 21-year olds would be brave enough to satirize a topic that has been put under the rug for some time
CINEMA FOR SOCIAL CHANGE – if you want to change society with films – you need to send out the right message to the young people.
I could still remember the perplexed expression in Pepe Diokno’s face when he exited the Main Theater of the CCP after the Awards night a few hours ago – and I’m thinking -
“Is this the way we encourage young people to change society with cinema – by giving a 21-year old first-time film maker ZERO AWARDS on your awards night?”
Somewhere, somehow there’s a lesson here. I hope the other film festivals would vindicate Pepe Diokno.
(full disclosure: I did some stills among other things for Engkwentro and my business partner recreated the whole sound of the film from the ground up (Mark Laccay FTW! )so at least you have a context of my rant but COME ON – ZERO AWARDS? oh well …)

This is the best Entrance Wedding March or should I say dance, I’ve ever seen. It is so original and creative if not funny. Somehow in its humor, I was very touched because it felt real. Weird. I was laughing but it was so sweet I wanted to cry too. LOL! Everyone was genuinely happy as it should on one’s wedding day, including the guests. Awesome!
In just a week since its upload, the video has received over 6 million views/hits with a five star rating from over 37 thousand YouTube members with over 35 thousand and counting comments!
I stay away from hot or spicy food. My taste buds just cannot handle the heat and it numbs my tongue and prevents me from enjoying what I eat. My eyes water immediately and my nose runs which really embarrasses me so to avoid all that, I refrain from even thinking about anything spicy.
One exception to that rule is KFC’s “Zinger”. I swear it is one of the few spicy food I dare finish convincing myself how delicious it is. But they recently improved the sandwich’s flavor and it has become too spicy for me to tolerate it.

Who else here spends their time on Facebook, poking people and making sure that every ounce of possible productivity is wasted? Not you? Fuck.
Okay, since nobody wants to admit surfing Facebook a lot (you fuckers), I’ll just ask you a question: who else is sick of the stupid quizzes that pop up one after another on your timeline? The occasional “Are You A Pervert?” taken by that hot girl who you used to masturbate to back in college would be fine, because her quiz results show that she is, indeed, a pervert. Afterward you go masturbating to the quiz results, but that’s another story.
But yeah, we’re getting way too many stupid quizzes on Facebook. You know what? Quizzes like “What is your name?” or “Did you go to [insert name of school]” or “pAnU k p0h mGmAhAL p0h????????” are just way too abundant on Facebook lately.
Seriously, I wonder how it can get worse. What sort of Facebook quizzes shouldn’t see the light of day?

| From Filipina on Flip Flops: Travel Tales and the City Life of a Filipina |
Being on top of Pre Rup with its spectacular view of the horizon begged for a moment of contemplation, and so the three of us wandered the top level of the temple separately, perhaps looking back and slowly starting to digest what we had seen and experienced in the past two days. I felt an immense sense of gratitude on my part – to have witnessed that much history, to have seen and touched and stood upon something that had been there for centuries, which someone in another time – another world, even – also witnessed and saw, touched and stood upon…well, I felt pretty damn lucky. This will sound strange, weird, cheesy or incredibly nerdy, depending on who’s reading it, but to be honest, being there, on top of an amazing centuries-old structure by an ancient civilization, I couldn’t help but feel a connection to an era that had long gone and that was not my own, and I really, truly felt the immensity and expanse of time.

- Four new mini games in the works
Berlin, 24. July 2009 – “Brain Buddies”, the game that has become the new favorite of Facebook users, achieved the mark of one million users in the record time of only three weeks of being online.
Louise S. from Miami, USA is the one millionth user.
There seems to be no end to Brain Buddie’s growth: The game already belongs to the Top 40 games on Facebook – out of a total of 10,000 games – adding 100,000 users daily. Overall the brain training game has reached 30 million minutes of play time already. The availability of Brain Buddies in eight languages plays out to its advantage: It has attracted users from 208 countries, among them Albania, Rwanda, and Vanuatu, an island in the South Pacific.
“We are very happy about the extraordinary start, but are in no ways resting on our laurels”, says founder and managing director Jens Begemann. “Quite to the contrary: we are continuously working on the game and have already included a number of ideas from our users. In addition, we will be integrating four new mini games soon”.
The brain training game that was launched on July 1st is the first game of the international game development company wooga from Berlin. Currently the team is already working on completely new games that the company will publish in the next few months, building on the momentum of Brain Buddies.
Brain Buddies offers its users a playful way to determine their brain weight. The game is focusing on a contest among friends to find the one with the heaviest brain. A set of eight mini games as well as entertaining graphics make the game fun to play for a long time. Brain Buddies is available on Facebook at the following address: http://apps.facebook.com/brainbuddies.
