When Husbands Get Sick

Tuesday
May 27,2008

About two weekends ago, Honey threw his back after exercising. Suddenly, he couldn’t move and he was in excruciating pain. I panicked. What was I to do? Who’s going to cook my lunch? ;)

Well, you know the rule here in Cambodia where emergency and hospital services and facilities are not yet very good and medical evacuation is ridiculously expensive - Bawal magkasakit sa Cambodia (You are not allowed to get sick in Cambodia).

So I was about to do the only Filipino-style first aid remedy I know - apply White Flower. Thank God that Evil Big Brother (and I say evil with much affection) had the foresight, good sense, and presence of mind to marry a physical therapist who I called up immediately. I must say that although I got a great family discount on the consultation fee (i.e. pro bono, gratis, or free), it still ended up expensive due to the high overseas calls rate.

I’d like to help encourage more people–especially young bloggers–to join the Philippine Issues Writing Project of FilipinoVoices.com. I’m donating three books to the pool of prizes that will be raffled off to participants at the end of the project.

The three books consist of two glossy, lavishly illustrated coffee-table books on Philippine attractions and one literary anthology.

Most people who have received an invite code from approved ümobile subscribers have been reporting login issues — and I’m one of them. Mr. Angelo Teves of ümobile called me last night to clear things out, including the page to invite your friends that mysteriously vanished which Mike mentioned here on my blog.

Apparently, newly registered users who have used an invite code to register cannot immediately login to their ümobile account. Your application needs to be approved by ümobile. The first need to verify the information you have entered during the registration process.

One point of our lives ay ninais nating sumikat. Aminin man natin o hindi, inasam din natin ito. Ang hindi umamin, may tae sa puwet. Marami namang paraan para sumikat, in the smallest possible ways. Simple lang naman ang mga paraan para sumikat. Paano malalaman kung sikat na? Ganito lang. Basahin ito ng buo.

Ginataang Kuhol

I had always thought that Kuhol (a.k.a escargot or brown snails) was an expensive dish and very hard to find. But despite that perception, I always welcomed when my mom served ginataang kuhol at our house. I did not have the icky reaction to that fact that it was a snail I was trying to pick out from the hard brown shell with a toothpick. Not only was my reaction surprising (I hate anything slimy and slithery a.k.a worms and slugs), my jaw dropped when I found out these little buggers cost about P10 to P20 a cup at the local market.

The easiest thing to do to kuhol is to cook and serve them with coconut milk. It has actually evolved into a famous dish served at places like Cabalen or Kamayan. Now you can have the same at home.

Everything by Doghouse Riley ccmixter.org editorial pick by Teru

Everything by Doghouse Riley, a remix of Drip's In-Between Remix

Listen to the remix here

Doghouse Riley’s remix just got an editorial pick from TERU:

“…I hear a hit from 1967 (Motown) or 1987 (Mod revival) in this great remix of dripmanila. And wail, it’s about time ol’ Doghouse Riley got an ED pick. ; )”

here’s some of the reviews of the remix:

“…Could have ended with my review after 23 seconds, but still wanted to listen to the rest of it. If there is a true follower of Phil Spector, it could be for sure Doghouse Riley fo ma thankin.
There seem to be two sort of producers: DR and those who can´t reach him! ;-)
Love always the humour and profesionality that you combine in your tracks!…”

“…more wickedness from the pound! :-)

ok - finally I have a couple of extra minutes to write a few more words:

My first reaction was just this really big grin, because if this music can’t put a happy smile on your face, you’re having a really bad day. Of course my previous comment about wickedness is based on the chasm between the emotion of the lyrics and the emotion of this remix And your note about PS illustrating the chasm that can exist between the music and the man (he’s not the only one either!) serves as an almost eerie parallel to your remix. And that ends up triggering kind of deep questions below the smile. A little like an old Woody Allen movie - lots of laughs while watching and then the deep thoughts sneak up on you. If that’s not wicked, what is?

On an a technical level, the period/genre homage is just striking - the attention to detail from the harmonies to the horns, from the piano to the drums. So professional, yet so playful. How do you do it?…”
“…Yes, it sure as hell feels like it’s 1967! Great job on orchestration and creating that vintage vibe. Love the horns…and that baritone sax! Mega Woof!…”

“…get out the white go go boots, go down town and yell at the H & R Block lady for the audit letter you got in the mail- everything is so taxing- but nice little Ronettey re mix here- Mick Ronson has nothing on you…”

“…Whooo YEAH I’m lovin’ this!! The Funk Brothers vibe fo sho! You just need a reverby tambourine and some electric sitar to make the picture complete. Damn, did this put a big stupid grin on my face :D …”

“Nice…VERY nice! I like everything about this! I swear I keep waiting for Smokey to jump in somewhere on harmony or something!!! And the illest thing of all is how it sounds retro & contemporary at the same time. Too
Sexy!!!
…”

“…Is this your Larry Levine tribute?
If so I’m sure he’d be dancing in the aisles to this one!..”

“…What the hell just happend….
Is this for real?:D
Do you do seminars to?
Bad ass DR…”

“…Sugar pie honey bunch…( me singing )…..yeah this is hot….!!!!! Motown, 60s and new school…..Very well done DHR. …”

“…Oh yea, that’s gro-o-o-vy… Course I’m too young to really remember the sixties (and no it wasn’t the drugs) but had I been listening to music back then I would have liked music like this, because I do now.

Not bad for a dog ;-)….”

“…hell yes. wall of sound indeed. …”

check out how DR did it!

Let’s just say last week was pretty weird for me. I’d rather not go into details, but let me just say the weirdness went into automatic proportions (a private joke there, har har har- what.) which rather left me depressed for the remainder of the week. If not for Sorsi I’d probably be depressed still. And that’s saying a lot, because when I talk to her I usually end up depressed and suicidal most of the time.

Anyway, I’ve probably been so awesometastically used to rejection that I don’t mind it lately (which is scary in itself). I really don’t understand what’s wrong with my approach. C’mon ladies, isn’t getting various pictures of me holding your mom hostage with the words “I Love You. Love Me Back. Or Else” written on her forhead the sweetest thing? Or the time I helpfully handed you your soap and shampoo in the shower? Wasn’t it a pleasant surprise?

How far will you go for a man?

Saturday
May 24,2008

Lately, my friends and I have come to talking about our past lives. I cannot remember how it all started and why. I can only guess that because of the years between the past and the present and the fact that we were all happily married now, we can all look back and laugh at all the stupidity of youth we once called our lives.

The topic that day centered on the lengths one would go to for the man they loved. Calm down! I know what you’re thinking! It was the same way that day. Everyone talked at the same time. Each wanting to share their experience and all wanted to be the most stupid of all. Oh yes, we can forgive ourselves and laugh at all our antics now but I’ll bet during those times, we were all lovestruck, blind and deaf. Even I cannot forget the years I used to run around in circles trying to please my guy.

Why it is Cook and not Archuleta?!

I was surprised by the decision of America to vote David Cook as the American Idol for 2008. If we garnered up all the comments said by the judge from their performances prior to the finals night it is so obvious that David Archuleta would probably bring home the bacon but how come the people of America didn’t hear about it?

After what seemed an eternity (at least to the wife) of explanation, we sat a little while at the mall we used to wait for my brother-in-law at (yes, he picks us both after I picked her up from the office – it’s complicated; don’t ask), then she said, “Let’s buy an iPhone.” I was floored because I didn’t really expect it that she’s really, actually thinking of buying an iPhone and that she’s just asking me about it. After a long discussion about our finances (lie), we bought two, yes t-w-o iPhones: one for my wife and one for…
