In a few months I’ll turn 25. Afterwards, it’ll be like half a decade before I reach 30. Imagine that. Two and a half decades. And now looking back, I see I have this impressive list of achievements in my life so far:

Um, okay. Maybe I don’t have any real achievements at all. Except for that mustache. They can’t get any finer than that, nosiree.

So to help me out in figuring what i want in life, I’ve commissioned my inner child to give me a pep talk. Or something.

INNER CHILD:   So, you quit your job, eh?
ME:   Yes I did.
INNER CHILD:   Didn’t you enjoy your job?
ME:   Yeah, kinda. But c’mon, I can’t spend the rest of my life answering calls and helping rednecks find the start button. I have to plan and make sure I become a somebody by I’m 27. Or something.
INNER CHILD:   Oh shit.
ME:   What?
INNER CHILD:   You’re planning.
ME:   Yeah? So?
INNER CHILD:   You’re planning!
ME:   I honestly don’t see the point here.
INNER CHILD:   You’re *gasp* growing up! Read the rest of this entry »

The Philippines: Singular and Plural

From David Joel Steinberg’s The Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place:

The Philippines is a singular and plural noun. The name Philippines refers both to an island archipelago and to a country of over 75 million people. It identifies a unified nation with a single people, the Filipinos, and also a highly fragmented, plural society divided between Muslims and Christians, peasants and city dwellers, uplanders and lowlanders, rich and poor, and between the people of one ethnic, linguistic, or geographic region and those of another.

Cecilia Cheung Scandal

Tuesday
Feb 26,2008

Just when you thought everyone was innocent, a sex scandal would pop from nowhere. It’s unfortunate that one of the victim on this latest sex scandal is my longtime crush, Cecilia Cheung. Apparently, these scandalous photos were taken by Edison Chen in 2005, stored on a laptop, and “stolen” by the people who repaired the laptop.

Below is a year 2006 commentary by photographer Elson T. Elizaga about our very own Philippine dog, more commonly known as the “Askal”, which was featured in the website of the Mindanao News and Information Cooperative Center (MNICC): http://www.mindanews.com. I actually can no longer find the exact URL of this article (even Google didn’t help). Good thing it was posted by someone in the yahoo group of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). Please keep on reading. You will not be disappointed by what you will learn.

Lately I’ve been spending more and more time playing in the arcade at SM San Lazaro. At first, I’d only plan on spending maybe a couple of tokens to play my two favorite games, Drum Mania and X-Men VS. Street Fighter. But then I’d get really drawn into the games, especially when someone challenges, so I end up spending my early morning and the whole afternoon playing there. By the way if you also play those games, let me warn you to not even dream of challenging me unless you want me to put shame on your miserable gamer ass.

Indios Can Become ProBloggers Too

Indio. This was a name given to us by the Spanish colonists long ago to remind us of our inferiority to their race. It was used as an insult and of mockery that suggests that we are nothing more but ignorant savages. For 300 years we have endured this maltreatment from our oppressors. But instead of getting discouraged, their name-calling fueled our determination to rise up and prove them wrong. This eventually gave birth to the Filipino passion of showing the world that we can do anything in spite of what other people say.

Such a trait is present within the personality of Sustines Laplana, a fellow Pinoy blogger who has been labeled as an “idiot blogger” of the blogosphere. Just like our ancestors, he ignored the name-calling and used this as a challenge to strive for success.

Let us take a look into the life of the idiot blogger and how he ended up as one of the successful probloggers in the Pinoy blogosphere.

How to Detect Filipinos in Bangkok

Monday
Feb 25,2008

Bangkok is crawling with Filipinos. They’re here in droves… in our hotel, in the malls, in the bargain centers. It’s not difficult to point them out and differentiate them from Thais and other Asians. Here’s how:

  • LANGUAGE. Duh! Naturally, Filipinos speak in Tagalog. But even if they do speak in English, the Filipino accent is easily detectable. We definitely pronounce our Rs better than the Singaporeans, Malaysians, and Thais. And we don’t say lah after every word or sentence like the Singaporeans and Malaysians. But we do have our own mannerisms in our English like using the words ba, diba, na, ha. I can tell that I’m beside Filipinos while shopping in the bargain center. They say:

“You give me good price ha because I’m buying plenty from you, diba?”

“What is this made of ba?”

“Mommy, you buy me this watch ha?”

Paalala ng Pasimuno ng People Power

Monday
Feb 25,2008

It would always be the same crooks, the same money interests who would take fullest advantage of democracy or any kind of government in the Philippines, while the poor and the brave would always lose out. The batters change in the game of Philippine politics, but the baseball team remains the same and the game remains fixed.

                                                                             – Ninoy Aquino

As we celebrate the 28th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, it would be good to look back on the wisdom of the man who inspired us to unite as a people and defend our country against a corrupt government. We are more aware of Ninoy’s oft-quoted, “The Filipino is worth dying for,” but I chose the one above because it is more suitable to our present times…     Click here and continue reading…

Orosman at Zafira: a review

Dulaang UP’s reconfigured ‘komedya’ ‘Orosman at Zafira’ is the first great production of the year.

…For starters, ‘Orosman’ is as much dance as it is dialogue. Its electrifying display of movement is this play’s most glittering achievement.

The story of three kingdoms locked in endless strife, plot after vicious plot assuring a constant pileup of dead bodies and broken souls, gathers momentum and energy from a series of breathtaking stylized battles that director-choreographer Dexter Santos has devised…
