Bad debts are bad debts because they are way past due and are difficult to collect. Understandably, the natural reaction of companies is to focus their collection efforts in collecting these kind of debts.

This is fine except that, usually, they end up spending resources not commensurate to the benefits, and will most likely be distracted in their efforts to collect their “good” accounts. Outsourcing becomes an option. It is a strategy that most multinational companies in the Philippines have long adopted. Read more at Pinoy Seminars.

A Bloody Chamber

The recent days have been busy – complete with exams and all sorts of academic requirements. But at last, it’s finally over – for this year at least.

Haven’t read local and national dailies since the start of the week, but the last thing I picked up falls under the category of good news: Arroyo backpedals on subversion law. Scriptorium discusses why the Anti-Subversion Law should NOT be revived.

In this context, respected political analyst Mon Casiple observes of the military’s new position as a powerful arbiter in the game that is Philippine politics.

Before this, it was the military intervening in politics or negotiating with civilian politicians for its own ends. It is now having illusions about its decisive role in regime change and becoming the nation’s leaders.

The WidgetBucks Blog has officially announced that they do not credit clicks that are coming from the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Egypt, and Romania. This means that you will not be paid if the clicks come from the countries that are mentioned above.

What are the non-paying countries or regions?

We are finding that advertisers are not willing to buy traffic from Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Egypt, and Romania.

It’s really important to mention this is an advertiser decision regarding the value of that traffic, NOT WidgetBucks’ decision. We repeat: this is an advertiser decision regarding the value of that traffic, NOT WidgetBucks’ decision. I emphasize this because publishers, for whatever reason, will undoubtedly and incorrectly draw the conclusion it is solely WidgetBucks’ decision.

Business for a cause
Setting up a Botika ng Bayan

Want to do business with a social function? Why not set up a Botika ng Bayan? You profit from the sale of an essential product (pharmaceutical drugs) and you help the community because you are selling them at a price lower than other drugstores since your source is the government (via the latter’s trading company, the Philippine International Trading Corporation (PITC).

Eligible applicants for the Botika ng Bayan Program can be a sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation, even an employee’s association or a cooperative. Pre-qualification requirements are:

1) Valid and current registration, with the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA), SEC, DOLE, or any organization authorized and certified by a duly recognized agency;
2) Minimum revolving capital of P500,000.00 for the project, as evidenced by a certification issued by an authorized Bank

EVERY STEP I MAKE

So here’s what I’ve learned so far about this new crew of people I work with these days. Most of them have been with the company for quite some time now (10+ years!) — and they still love working here. And despite the highly physical kind of work we do everyday, they are active on their off days as well. For instance, one teaches Kundalini yoga, another one rides horses, one gal just completed her first triathlon, and this other guy runs miles before and after his shifts (he’s an actor so he says he has to stay in impossibly terrific shape). And me? I sleep until past noon when I’m off because my body’s achy and sore after two or three consecutive work days.

Recruitment 101

Having been exposed to the corporate world for a while, I have taken note of interesting match between jobs and people. Economic background, IMO, affects paradigm and job.

People who graduated from an A-list university and grew from a well off family tends to be good on property management (i.e. hotel, resort, shopping mall management) sales and marketing, and customer service management. The absence of financial need developed confidence in negotiations and limitless exposures on events. Likewise, living in an upscale environment have set the standard of elegance and understanding of superb service.

On the other hand, people who worked to support his studies, at the same time, and those who came from not so well off family tend to be good workers and good in people management. Understanding what it meant to be in need, these people can be happy with what they have (rather than having nothing), and tends to be more loyal to their jobs and company compare to their rich counterparts. These people, likewise, when given the opportunity to lead, can be good in managing people as they can easily sympathize and empathize with ordinary folks. They are also in the best position to inspire ordinary folks to gun for bigger things.

After the last Wowowee Scam a few months ago here’s another video to prove the cheating scam of the said game show “Wilyonaryo.” This video says it all and I hope that this is the last of scams Wowowee could ever produce. Watch and be amaze on how they practice the game show in private with music and fake expressions.

Somebody told me that one should write in the form that one loves to read. That makes sense, doesn’t it? Why grill steaks if you’re a vegetarian? (This also means I’ll never take my master’s degree as theses and dissertations are not exactly my kind of bedtime reading). Following that principle, people would probably deduce that my favorite literary forms to read would be the autobiography and personal essay as it is the form (not that literary though) that I most often write in, right? Wrong. I write personal essays and short autobiographies not because I like reading personal essays and short autobiographies but simply because I like talking about myself and myself is my favorite topic. ;)

Christmas Caroling in the Philippines

Dec 18,2007

Caroling is a part of the Filipino Christmas tradition. Once the Dawn Mass known as “Misa de Gallo” or “Simbang Gabi ” starts, carolers will be on their feet singing Christmas carols from house to house spreading the spirit of the season through songs.

Children like to form groups and enjoy hopping from one house to another every night singing Jingle Bells, Silent Night and traditional Filipino Christmas songs like Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit, Pasko Na Naman, at Namamasko.

2008 Demands Creative Minds

2008 Demands Creative Minds

While I was trying to create some sample teasers for our up coming Christmas bash, I then asked myself if I could really produce a really good out put knowing that I haven’t done these stuffs for couple of months now. Worst, I haven’t undergone any training on CS3 Photoshop though I can manage to outline some figures and throw some colors on it but I doubt if you’ll call that an art. But mind you, way back when I used to get enthused I tend to paint stuffs on a canvass. I wonder where those paintings are today…

Anyway, I wonder what the demands are for 2008. Would it still demand for an average employee with less competencies and skills for you to compete in the global arena? Or would it demand knowledge workers packed with innovativeness and creativity to be able to survive. My fellow Human Resource colleagues, what’s your pick? And why such a demand is inevitable? Below is a space for your inputs. Next entry would be a compilation of your random thoughts. Just stick with the format I’m providing below for your thoughts to be recognized.

What’s your pick here!

Its Christmas time around the world and people exchange gifts and wishes in this special time of the year. Good will wishes are expressed in many different languages during this joyous time.

You may want to add a special greeting in your Christmas cards, gift tags or in your e-cards this year to wish your friends, neighbors, colleagues, chat friends “Merry Christmas” in other languages. Or if you are spending Christmas abroad this year, here is one resource that will help you communicate the greetings for the season

Back home, when we were still kids, we called this game “pik”, probably the Visayan way of saying “pick”. The game is played by two players first holding hands and then, on the count of three, releasing the hold to do a gesture of a “bato”, “papel”, or “gunting”. The rule is simple: Bato wins over gunting. Papel wins over bato. Gunting wins over papel.

And guess what? I have just learned from the Thinking Blog that there is actually a professional competition for the game complete with an annual world championship at that. This was held last October 13 in Toronto, Canada with a total of $10,000 in prize money. In the championship, a woman bested a man to become the first ever woman world champion. Divorce

Monday
Dec 17,2007

I work for a company that employs people from around the world. Because of that, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the different cultures of the people I worked with. I got to know Americans, Italians, Brits, Australians, Japanese, Chinese, Indians and many more.

Because of this diversity, very interesting conversations materialize during lunch or coffee breaks. One such discussion was about arranged marriages and divorce. You see back then, I had a colleague who had requested for a month long PTO (personal time off). When we asked, he revealed that he was going to meet his future wife and her family for the first time.
