2008 Demands Creative Minds

While I was trying to create some sample teasers for our up coming Christmas bash, I then asked myself if I could really produce a really good out put knowing that I haven’t done these stuffs for couple of months now. Worst, I haven’t undergone any training on CS3 Photoshop though I can manage to outline some figures and throw some colors on it but I doubt if you’ll call that an art. But mind you, way back when I used to get enthused I tend to paint stuffs on a canvass. I wonder where those paintings are today…

Anyway, I wonder what the demands are for 2008. Would it still demand for an average employee with less competencies and skills for you to compete in the global arena? Or would it demand knowledge workers packed with innovativeness and creativity to be able to survive. My fellow Human Resource colleagues, what’s your pick? And why such a demand is inevitable? Below is a space for your inputs. Next entry would be a compilation of your random thoughts. Just stick with the format I’m providing below for your thoughts to be recognized.

What’s your pick here!

Back home, when we were still kids, we called this game “pik”, probably the Visayan way of saying “pick”. The game is played by two players first holding hands and then, on the count of three, releasing the hold to do a gesture of a “bato”, “papel”, or “gunting”. The rule is simple: Bato wins over gunting. Papel wins over bato. Gunting wins over papel.

And guess what? I have just learned from the Thinking Blog that there is actually a professional competition for the game complete with an annual world championship at that. This was held last October 13 in Toronto, Canada with a total of $10,000 in prize money. In the championship, a woman bested a man to become the first ever woman world champion. wala ng tatalo sa pasko ng pinas.

Divorce

Monday

I work for a company that employs people from around the world. Because of that, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the different cultures of the people I worked with. I got to know Americans, Italians, Brits, Australians, Japanese, Chinese, Indians and many more.

Because of this diversity, very interesting conversations materialize during lunch or coffee breaks. One such discussion was about arranged marriages and divorce. You see back then, I had a colleague who had requested for a month long PTO (personal time off). When we asked, he revealed that he was going to meet his future wife and her family for the first time.

Teach Your Adsense What Ads to Display

Ever get frustrated every time your AdSense units display advertisements that are not related to your blog’s theme or content? You know, ads like beaches and resorts showing up on your sidebar when your blog is talking about cooking?

AdSense makes use of a very powerful technology which determines what relevant ads it should display on your ad units. This tool scans your blog, locates keywords, and picks up the most appropriate advertisement to display. However, like any artificial intelligence, it is not that perfect.

Out-of-Place Advertisement

Based on AdSense’s calculations, it may have assumed that your blog is talking about beaches and resorts because you have used a lot of these keywords on your blog post. Even with Adsense’s new feature that let’s you filter unwanted ads, you still don’t have full control over what advertisements Google chooses for your blog.

But don’t fret, you can still getting those cents from AdSense. All you need to do is to how it what keywords to choose.

Last July, I decided to buy a laptop using my savings from Stock Trading and Google Adsense. Because of my limited budget (Php42,000) I have to balance the quality versus cost of this laptop. I want a laptop that has a “name”, and has some “a little advanced” features like video cam, wireless connection, core duo, and a DVD support. I later decided to buy ASUS A8HE at Php 40,000 with free bag, Asus router, and Logitech mouse. Read More >>

BRAVO! Best of Theater 2007

BY RIGHT, 2007 should have been a red-letter year for local theater.

Repertory Philippines and the Philippine Educational Theater Association (Peta), the two most established and consistent professional drama companies in the country, marked their 40th anniversary this year.

But they’re not the only ones to feel a sense of accomplishment this year. Gantimpala Theater also celebrated its 30th anniversary, while Tanghalang Pilipino notched its 20th birthday in the business.

Milestones all, but the theater companies by and large held back on the self-congratulations–no grand fetes or nostalgic tributes–and just went about what they did best: mount plays.

Here’s the cream of the crop of Manila theater in 2007–productions and performances worth celebrating any time.

“So when you go home to the Philippines, do you still go back to Kamuning?” asked the young smiling girl at the back of my car.

“Yes,” I answer back. “I go home to my Mom’s house whenever I go to the Philippines.”

“And that Mommy, is she really your mother? She knows how to use the computer?”

“Yes, the commenter named Mommy is really my mother and she has her own laptop.”

“And it’s good that you’re through with that nasty bout of chickenpox.”

“Oh yes, it’s quite a relief. Honey and I were really miserable when we had it.”

“And where is Honey? Can I call him Honey too?”

“Uh, well no. Honey stayed home. He’s like Mr. Snuffleupagus. I talk about him a lot but no one ever sees him. He’s actually just my imaginary lover.” ;)

“Oh, it’s probably okay that he stayed home. I’m sure that he could cook something really good for himself.”

Christmas Pageant

Sunday
Dec 16,2007

If there are christmas presentations at the office, it is not surprising that there are presentations in school as well.

This is the second year that my son has participated in their school’s christmas pageant but it is the first time that he actually stayed on the stage to complete what their class has been practicing for weeks.

Christmas Shopping

I just realized that it’s only a few more days till Christmas, and I still haven’t shopped for a thing yet. So now I run the risk of losing a sizable number of friends, and I don’t want to lose any more especially after the last time I failed to give anybody anything for Christmas.

But the thing is, I’m sort of broke right now due to a certain really impulsive purchase I made around last week, and I’m contemplating robbing a bank or holding a head of state hostage so that I can afford to give anybody gifts. But everybody knows I am incapable of committing crime, so I’ll probably give head to random passers-by in a secluded Quiapo alleyway. But let’s just pretend I don’t do that and that I’m actually a dangerous convict who robs banks for the heck of it.

So I ran into the mall panting like crazy. It’s only a few days before Christmas. I’m becoming desperate, and time is running out. I need to get gifts. Fast. Before my friends kill me. As I get into the awesomely crowded department store – I push about twenty people, including a pregnant woman, an iPod-wearing metro fag with a pink t-shirt on, and an elderly lady – out of my way.

The Downhill Battle Against Impulsive Buying

As everybody and their mother knows, I have been lusting for the ASUS eeePC since time immemorial. When I say “lusting”, I mean “keep me away from the nearest eeePC because I swear, I will dry hump that bitch if I ever get my hands on one.” Well, I actually had the same feeling when I saw an iPod nano way back in 2005. I knew it wouldn’t be a wise purchase because my shuffle was still working faithfully. Well, a year later I was dry humping a baby blue iPod nano 2nd gen (yes, I know, baby blue. How manly. Shut up).

It was by then I realized that I have a little problem. No, I’m not talking about my penis size, you perv (that’s a huge problem. Har, har har). I’m talking about my seemingly innate ability to not save up. Just put a huge amount of cash on my hands, and I’d walk away with the most useless of things. By the time I need to spend for things I really need, I’d be broke. Yay! Read the rest of this entry »

HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW

Sunday
Dec 16,2007

Many, many summers ago my friend J fell in love with a boy and was so infatuated with him that she couldn’t eat or sleep for days on end. Two months later she had lost 15 lbs. and had gone from pleasingly plump to scorchingly svelte.

The only downside was that due to her rapid weight loss, she had lost so much of her thick, black hair that she had a huge bald spot on top of her forehead. I remember joking with her at the time: This is how God evens out the playing field for us women, you see. You may be able to show off your body but now you have to hide your head. She didn’t think I was funny at all, obviously.

Dear Mr. Technology,

Hi. I’m Gino Carteciano and I’m a big fan. In fact, I took up Computer Science as a sign of my devotion to you. I’ve been mostly happy with you and your almost magical wonders, but recently, I’ve been getting harassed by your failures that are quite simply irritating and frustrating. I think I’m starting to hate you and everything closely related to you. Well, except the Bionic Woman.

In Amsterdam, Holland’s sparkling capital, bustling streets like the Damstraat host shops and stores that are a breathtaking mix of the bohemian and the cosmopolitan, reflecting the country’s unique cultural watermark.

Chic haberdashery and strong coffee beckon to passersby side by side with mountains of cheese, traditional souvenir items and sex paraphernalia. Cheerfully lighted sex shops share cramped street space with quaint indie bookstores and cafés, while hazy pubs offer a choice of pastries laced with marijuana.

I dream of dancing in Broadway

Sunday

If today I was asked what I wanted to be when I grow up, there is only one reply I would give. I want to be a dancer in Broadway.

Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted to dance. In fact, I love movies that are all about dancing. Flashdance, Sing, Swing Kids, Dirty Dancing, Stomp the Yard, Center Stage, Save the last dance, Bring it on, Chicago, Take the Lead are just some of the dance-related movies that I have watched.

Networking: Headhunter secrets revealed and how ordinary professionals can learn from it.

Why other headhunters are so successful in this field while others tend to fail? Failure in the sense that, they run out of resources or referrals for such a really hot seat for a certain company. Was their network too small? Have they run out of ideas on how to pool potential talents, where to search them and place them on a very dynamic database that updates itself from time to time?

A vast network is the key ingredient for one headhunter to succeed and that’s a fact. Without a wider array of network a headhunter fails. If you are looking forward of becoming one, then I guess you’ll have to start networking now before it’s too late.

Headhunters are increasing in population now a days and this is to the advantage to various employers who taps their service. The more an employer taps a service of various headhunters, the higher the percentage of filling such juicy vacancy. Correct me if I’m wrong on this assumption.

Actually, I’ll be presenting to you both offline and online ways on how to broaden your network as a headhunter or just an ordinary professional because this article is not just for headhunters but for those who wanted to broaden their network in general. As they say, it doesn’t matter what you know but rather whom you know.

I always get those types of calls at the office. A telemarketer introduces herself on the phone as being from a certain insurance company and tells me about a free one-year accident insurance. I always turn them down saying “wala akong balak maaksidente ngayon taon.” (I don’t intend to figure in an accident this year.)

Curious?

Pursuit of Happyness

Pursuit of Happyness

This movie really reminds me of one person who’s very close to me. He shared his story to me just last night about some of his frustrations when he has still in school that turned out to be challenges for him to overcome. As you all know, I’m on call 24/7.

His story really was so inspiring that I really listened carefully word for word. So what’s the price Rodel for listening to him? This article of course, otherwise I won’t be listening to anyone.

Just to make the story short, his story happened long time ago when we were still in high school. Actually, we were at the same school and we have the same passion i.e. dancing & acting Clown. And hell no, this guy is not my alter ego in fact I’m a lot different than him. I was good at school or I was trying to be good at school but my teacher labeled me as a bad kid. She was just sooooo … arggh! Anyway, she labeled me as a troublesome kid wherein everyday I get into trouble and I was the source of it. Poor teacher… Worst, she didn’t even let me in to her class for a month! And it was my science class. Can you believe that? How many experiments I missed and supposedly lessons to learn? Believe me I was really good; it’s just that there were uncontrollable circumstances.
