Let’s go talk about the Philippines and the spread of GNU/Linux in this, as PGMA calls it - 2nd World Country.

“A Computer for Every School” or ACES is a government project aiming to put at least one (1) computer in every school in the Philippines. But with the budget limited, they are now considering using GNU/Linux instead, with that, I strongly recommend using Edubuntu.

MPAA Violating the GPL License?

Saturday
Dec 29,2007

The Motion Picture Association of America or MPAA has been forced to stop distributing its “University Toolkit” online. Many are familiar with MPAA as they are in the forefront of Anti-Piracy campaigns especially via BitTorrent and related sites. But people are claiming the MPAA violated the GPL License with their University Toolkit….

Its a Merry Christmas indeed for me today as I finally got my Google Adsense earnings at Western Union.

I reached the $100 limit before the end of November so I was actually expecting a payout from Google. But when I reviewed the Adsense payout schedule, I calculated that I would be getting my money around the middle of January. That would be if I opted to be paid via standard check.

EXPECTING THE EX

Friday
Dec 28,2007

The gal who was processing my return at Saks today was young and cute. Makeup in place, hair nicely styled, outfit quietly hip. So it surprised me when one of her co-workers walked by and commented after greeting her chirpily, “Oh — and you look good today!” As if looking good was more of an exception rather than the rule for this young, cute thing.

She must have sensed my invisible raised eyebrow because, without looking up at me from the register, she explained, “My ex’s new girlfriend was in here yesterday and I looked really awful. You know, it was early in the morning, the day after Christmas…”

marqllosa460.jpgAfter Ang Lee’s espionage thriller Se, Jei, the film adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s celebrated novel is another movie I’d like to see – Love in the time of Cholera by the esteemed author, who more often than not looks like one of the Mario brothers of my childhood years. I haven’t read the book yet and I still don’t know when it’d be shown here in the Philippine shores.

In the meantime, Inquirer entertainment columnist Ruben Nepales shares an interview of the pop music Shakira, who was asked by Marquez, a fellow Columbian, to write songs for the film:

The Obligatory Year-End Post of Pwnage

I believe I should start this entry with an apology. Sorry sorry sorry for not updating for the last… uhh… 3 weeks. At first I just didn’t have anything to write about I was too lazy to post shuddup and when inspiration finally struck, my internet at home died on me. Hence, no entries on Christmas day and no online greetings for my fellow bloggers and 3 precious readers.

“Boohoo. Excuses, excuses! Kring, you suck!! *kicks*”, you are probably thinking to yourself right now, and guess what, I’m with you on that.

So anyway, 2007’s about to bid us farewell and we all know what that calls for… Yup! The Obligatory Year-End Post of Pwnage! This year had been more than amazing. I experienced so many firsts that it felt like I went through a series of rites of passage, as if I got circumcised over and over again (not like I actually know how it feels. I’ve already denied the existence of my penis).

So the year’s almost ending and I’m just beginning to get the hang out of blogging regularly again after my nth leave of absence. Let’s see, this year alone, I abandoned my blog at least twice, then changed my mind, then got tired of blogging, then went back to blogging regularly. And somewhere along the road, I managed to put out a couple of articles for TMB that I’m somewhat proud of. And by that I mean none of these articles will get me banned from churches, malls, and hospitals.

Factors such as originality, public reaction, and whether I was naked or not while writing them were taking into account into ranking said posts.

So anyway, without further ado here’s the list. I hope you enjoy reading some of them as I have writing them. Happy New Year everyone!

Articles I’m most proud of in descending order.

  1. Lips of an Agent
  2. Teri Hatcher Speaks Up!
  3. Honeyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!
  4. 50 Reasons Why Sesame Street Sucks!
  5. Job Hunt
  6. A day in the life of TMB
  7. Filipino Driver Aptitude Test
  8. It’s Hard Being a Cannibal
  9. HAIKU!
  10. Dear Mr. Internets

After years of people hearing me say that I wanted to dye my hair blue, I finally did it!

Right now, I have blue hair. Obviously, blue is not my natural hair color. It came from a bottle, or more like a packet of dye.

On Fitting Rooms

I hate fitting rooms. It’s not really the happiest of experiences when you try to put on the, um, “hippest” clothes, only to find out in dismay that the clothes look horrible on you. And you’d have somebody waiting outside the dressing room, waiting for you to show them how you look.

You cower in one corner, begging to not show them how you look like. Then you’d get a stern voice coming from outside the dressing room, saying “Gerard Adrian, if you don’t come out here this very moment, I’ll leave you alone in the dressing room. And have that serpent-man who lives in the bowels of the mall come up there and eat you. And I’ll throw in a tear gas grenade in there as well. Just get the fuck out!”

A few tearful tantrum-filled minutes later, you would hesitantly open the dressing room door, in the shittiest clothes ever, and you’d find about twenty people (mostly women) staring at you and stifling their laughter because you’re dressed like a Mexican.

Yeah, I have like the shittiest childhood ever. Fuck you.

Boxing Day Madness

Every December 26 Canadians celebrate Boxing Day. The madness starts with rock bottom Sale in every store all throughout Canada. Most retail stores opens as early as 6 AM and buyers are already lined up outside the doors of every store not minding the freezing cold just to get a great deal. I am one of those buyers who waited in line early this morning. According to Canada Stats Canadians spent $1.2 billion from buying electronic items, clothing etc.

I got myself a Panasonic MP3/WMA car deck, TMA 6.5 coaxial speakers, and Rockford Fosgate 10″ subwoofer for my car. It was my first time trying to join the madness of Boxing day and it was fun. Next year I am planning to buy a 52″ Plasma LCD TV which are %50 off.

boxing day

I spent almost $200 for my car electronics which is still way low than its original price. For the Panasonic deck I got it for $79.99 from $99.99, TMA speakers for $64.99 from $109.99 and the Subwoofer fof $54.99 from $111.99. I saved $122.00 which is a good deal.

There’s nothing like murderous air gun-wielding village dwellers to ruin the Christmas spirit.

Below is a very grim email that has been circulating in animal welfare/lover mailing groups about the heartless massacre of some caged homeless and harmless kittens using air guns in Dasmariñas Village. The incident happened on December 16, 2007. It’s one of those news that show how cruel human beings can get and how they can abuse the power they have over other creatures of this world. Dasmariñas Village residents should be very concerned about this and should do something before these criminals get their hands on real guns with real bullets.

Reverse New Year’s Resolution

Ang New Year’s resolution ko ay hindi na ako gagawa pa ng anumang new year’s resolution.

One of the things that I look forward to every time January 1 draws closer is the new year’s resolutions list. While I do wonder why people would wait for one long year in order to re-wire their lives, I don’t have other qualms to have my own. Hey, it won’t hurt to follow this tradition and I don’t think anyone has ever died writing one (except perhaps if that person’s resolved to kill himself, but that’s another story).

Of course, I am well aware that this list is like a Philippine ballot form - it is not always counted and followed.

Garlic Mashed Potatoes

I would not call potatoes as the Philippines staple but I can say that it is very popular. Almost everyone loves french fries, others prefer the healthier baked potato, or mashed potatoes which come as side dish to most fast food dishes.

My mom has done mashed potato in several different variations. I myself have done a bit of experimentation on this popular dish and would like to share how I do my yummy garlic mashed potatoes.
