6 Ways to Write a Bad Resume

Below is a list of ways to write a bad resume.

1. Include pre school in your educational background

This is one of the most common mistakes people write in their resumes. Employers do not need to know where you went for your formative years. They just need to know where you went for college.

2. Lie about your “Awards” in college

There are some people who would do anything to get to get their dream job. Some would even go as far as lying about their ‘awards’ in college. But be warned! Lying can only get you in trouble. All lies that you included in your resume would surely come out during your interview. What if you said that you got awarded the best in debate award? Surely the interviewer would notice that you are not in fact a debater! And what about the inconsistencies you are bound to make?

The deadly Mother’s club

Tuesday
May 29,2007

Marie Claire magazine featured an article in its May 2007 edition about a certain mother’s club that exists in Japan. This club supposedly is composed of mothers within a community. Membership to the club is believed to be essential to one’s child’s success in school and in the community with regards to access to opportunity. Apparently, membership comes with opened doors to good schools and good services. Much like being in a high school clique.

It is a difficult task to get accepted into the club. One must be deemed acceptable by the members of the club and especially approved by the boss mom. One’s manners, clothes, income, friends, way of life is scrutinized and judged. Once a member, mothers have to behave, dress, walk, talk, and live according to the club’s defined standards which are mostly dependent on the club’s boss mom. Going against the group is social suicide.

I’m looking for a job.

There I said it. I can’t seem to find a job that suits me well. I graduated in 2005 and God knows how long (and hard) two years of being a bum is. If someone out there knows a part-time job or two then dude (or dudette) please help me out.

Anyways, good thing there is Jobstreet and JobsDB (PI version of Monster and Career builder). They seriously save my soles from being abused by the mangled road asphalt (no thanks to MMDA and DPWH!) of Manila. You could try your luck by browsing through their site for job vacancies in various companies around the country (most are based in Manila though). If you’re not lucky enough just like me, well you can always take the road and try to look for jobs the old fashion way but If you’re the type who doesn’t easily give up and you were born adventurous and is willing to face danger then check out this ad that I stumbled upon.

IGNORANCE IS BLISS

…It’s a routine we know well. They get to work, I read a bit, and often I fall asleep. The whole time they are talking and laughing — in Vietnamese. And if you think I’m about to complain about their speaking in a language I don’t understand, think again. I have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about (the only words I understand are “girl loves boy” and “boy loves girl” — which obviously has nothing to do with getting my nails done). For all I know someone is wondering why I keep biting my fingernails and the other is complaining about the rough, tough calluses on the heels of my feet. But I don’t know and I don’t care.

TV Networks in the Philippines are not really known for their creativity nor their originality to come up new ideas. This is one of the TV networks ripping-off several internationally known characters. Namely Lupin, Sailormoon, Indina Jones and finally Lara Croft.

Well, the Chinese ripping off a whole theme park is another matter… and you thought that piracy is that bad in the Philippines.

Very Merry Month

Tuesday
May 29,2007

The merry month of May was made merrier by the visit of two special people to our home. It is very rare that I get a visit from anyone in the Philippines so to get two in a month is such a treat!

First, my friend Sheila Francisco dropped by after her NY visit en route to San Francisco. It was a short three-day visit, but like a typhoon touchdown – very memorable. Those of you who know Sheila know much of a riot she is to have around. Even our pup, Katy could not leave her alone. She even kept Sheila company in the guest room for a couple of nights. Thanks for taking the time, my friend. We’ll see you in London!!!

Blonde and Purple

Tuesday
May 29,2007

This month has been a flurry of activities and I haven’t found the time to really unwind and just blog ever since that weekend my friends and I had in New York.

Lito Villareal, Sheila Francisco and I spent the time just eating, catching up, discussing their upcoming auditions and watching shows. We caught the matinee of Legally Blonde the Musical on their opening week and all I can say is “Omigosh, you guys!” We did nothing but laugh during the show, and those of you who know this trio know how we can laugh. Starting from that funny opening number in the sorority house, I sat there in disbelief that someone actually penned an entire song called Omigosh, You Guys – we were carried through the surreal story of Elle Woods ending up as a Harvard Valedictorian with flawless choreography, witty writing, incredible singing voices, solid ensemble, and two heart-melting dog actors.

At least four times a week, I travel along EDSA avenue from my home in Mandaluyong to my office in Pasay City and back again. Ever so often and whenever I have a little extra money jingling in my pocket, I take a taxi cab. I take the seat beside the driver and endure a constant stream of complaints on my way to my destination, usually punctuated by curses at the public buses that recklessly swerve in front in a bid to outdo its other bus competitors. I could only nod with bated breath as the buses swerve inches away from my side of the cab.

… hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails. (Anonymous)

In times when one feels lost and about ready to give up… from life, from love, from learning from both, it’s always nice to know there are people who’d gladly remind you that there are songs to still sing, sights to still see, reasons to live and hope for.

Like a Virgin Blue

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, we are about to take off. Please turn off all electronic devices like mobile phones, ipods, laptops and toasters,” said the voice over the public address system inside the plane.

The best word to describe Virgin Blue is cheeky. From their big red planes to the sexy Bondi Babe painted below the cockpit, Virgin Blue just screams attitude. And that is good.

I came home around 11:30 tonight. From afar, I could already tell that my idiotic neighbors were gathered in front of our house, having a blast with this godawful machine called videoke.

It’s 12:35 now. The idiots are still going at it. They don’t seem to have any plans of shutting up.

I’m currently finishing a web usability research study for my Master’s thesis and I am looking for volunteers who would be responding to an online survey tool. The research is an assessment of the usability of higher education institutions’ websites here in the Philippines.

If you would like to participate and volunteer (which I urge you), kindly download and fill out the User Profile Form. Please send the filled-out form back to me at regnard (at) raquedan.com. After which, I will send you more details regarding the usability research.
