Legally bland

The mighty New York Times has weighed in on the just-opened Broadway musical version of “Legally Blonde,” and it’s not a pretty review.

Snark drips off the opening lines: “Flossing between songs is recommended for anyone who attends ‘Legally Blonde,’ the nonstop sugar rush of a show that opened last night at the Palace Theater, joining the ranks of such nearby temples to candy worship as the M&M and Hershey’s theme stores.”

Speech of A UP Diliman Genius

Take (Not) The Road Less Traveled

Speech of Mikaela Irene Fudolig, 16 years old, on April 22, 2007 during UP Graduation Ceremonies. She graduated Summa cum laude, BS Physics at UP Diliman.

“… Take NOT the road less traveled. Rather, MAKE new roads, BLAZE new trails, FIND new routes to your dreams. Unlike the track-beaters in campus who see where they’re going, we may not know how far we can go. But if we are brave, defiant searchers of excellence, we will go far. Explore possibilities, that others may get a similar chance. I have tried it myself. And I’m speaking to you now.”

Time Sucks

Why does a day only have 24 hours? I hate it. Time sucks.

So when the hell do we enjoy life?

Time flies when you’re having fun? Not really. Time flies while you’re busy doing the things that will bring you to the happy times that don’t really exist.

Change Will Do You Good

It’s true! Change will really do you good. I’ve been feeling terrible for months, but the simple news that my request to transfer to another project at work has been approved instantly lifted up my depression - just in time for my birthday.

Basang Panaginip

By my estimate there are around 6000-7000 pinoy blogs out there. Out of this only around 20 percent are active. And out of the active blogs, around 20 percent receive substantial traffic.

Blogging by the Bay

When we received our recall order last January that we were to go back home on July next year, the urgency of getting a place to live in Manila suddenly haunted us. We left the Philippines for Cambodia in 2002 barely two weeks after we got married with nothing to our name as a married couple save for a rice cooker or two which we received as wedding gifts.

Of course we know that Dad and Mom would welcome their youngest child and their favorite son-in-law who currently lives in Cambodia to their house in Kamuning. We also know that Papa and Mama would welcome their beloved only child and favorite daughter-in-law to their house in Lucena. But golly — we are much too old to be bossed around babied by our parents.

The urgency is also aggravated by the fact that of all the times for the dollar to devalue and for the peso to appreciate, it has to be now when we’re earning dollars and about to use our hard-earned cash to purchase a home.

Pogi Rock I: Fan Labels

Nakakatawa kasi, dahil sa Pinoy bands lang yata ganyan; enlighten if I got it wrong.

I was channel surfing earlier today when I stumbled upon the ever familiar “The BUZZ” (with Ruffa Guttierez-Bektas, Kristy Fermin and Boy Abunda) on ABS-CBN channel. My sister, upon seeing the gossip talk show, asked me to drop the remote and stop pushing the buttons for a while. I obliged since I wasn’t interested to any particular shows that were being aired. While watching the show’s cast dishing out the headlines, I was intrigued by one of their headline stories. They were insinuating that a “well known star” was an ampon ( adopted) and claimed to have the legitimate birth certificate of the “star”.

Facts Filipinos hardly know

“McKinley gave the Filipinos only one choice - submit to American authority or die. The Filipinos chose to die rather than submit to a new master. For almost a year, the Filipino army fought the better-armed American forces in open-field or conventional warfare. Attempts by the Filipinos to seek an armistice were rebuffed by the Americans. To the Americans, armistice meant an unconditional surrender of the Filipino army before any talks may be initiated, a condition that Aguinaldo considered a breach of the standard norms of warfare. The Filipinos refused to accept the American condition for armistice without any clear commitment that a government of their own will be respected by the Americans. After a succession of defeats in numerous battlefields, the Filipinos shifted to guerrilla tactics. The change in strategy surprised the Americans who began to suffer heavier casualties from sneak attacks and ambuscades. So the bloody conflict dragged on for three more years. ”

Bloggers, journalists and Garci

While campaigning in Lucena, Quezon, I found time to visit Delfin Mallari Jr., the Philippine Daily Inquirer correspondent who survived a slay attempt last week. As a blogger, I thanked Delfin for publishing some of my blog articles in his local paper, Ang Dyaryo Natin.
