The present Manila Cathedral in Intramuros is the sixth structure erected on the site. The very first one, made of nipa and bamboo, was built in 1581 but was razed to the ground by a fire two years later. Another one, this time made of wood and stone, was built in 1593, but earthquakes weakened its foundation; it had to be completely demolished. A new cathedral was later built on the site. It was the most impressive with three naves and seven side chapels; however, it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1645.
Chapter 5 - An Alien Culture
The early days were a bit of a blur. Here I was in a foreign and sometimes truly alien culture sweating it out in a climate more suited to alligators than Englishmen! Outside there were an amazing amount of people with guns! There were check points and Martial Law and I was opening a store selling RTW clothing with my name outside - I was even decidedly unsure about the whole venture! And then there was the publicity! I wasn’t really used to that. I’d had publicity before in Europe and had even appeared (drunk unfortunately and telling a dirty joke to the Premier of New South Wales) on TV in Australia, but the Philippines was so “personal”. Everyone seemed to spend an inordinate amount of time just gossiping about everyone else: who was bonking who and why and when and even HOW. It is hardly surprising that the Philippines ended up as the text capital of the world!
In the mid 70’s there wasn’t much choice when it came to press publicity because Marcos had closed down a lot of newspapers for not being too friendly to him so one was very much left with the Bulletin Today and it’s magazine, PANORAMA. Chelo Banal interviewed me one afternoon – a delightful young lady – and soon I was chatting away nineteen to the dozen with no thought at all. As far as I was concerned we were just gossiping. Wrong. “And what did I think of our local actors?” I had been asked. “Well,” I had stupidly said with no thought at all, “I think Christopher de Leon has about as much talent as a dead slug!” It had been a throw away line designed, I guess, to make me seem both clever and superior. Such is the naiveté of the young and inexperienced. Actually Christopher was the ONLY actor that I knew about at that time and he was, in fact, a good actor; but I was just having fun. Gossip. I was enjoying this. Christopher de Leon wasn’t. As far as he was concerned it was libel or slander or whatever, but it wasn’t Kosher and I was in for big legal trouble.

A few years ago, I attended a forum on intellectual property and, on my way home, I hitched a ride with someone who was a self-professed inventor. Apparently, he was a member of one of those associations of Filipino inventors. While driving, he told me of a technology he developed which would allow people to store value in their cellphones using SMS. He said he was trying to sell the technology to the telcos, apparently referring to Smart and Globe. Read full post at http://pinoyseminars.blogspot.com.

Inspired by the words of the great Manuel Luis Quezon, former President of the Philippine Commonwealth — “education is the right of all citizens and that educated people is needed to ensure the upliftment of the masses and the creation of wealth for all” — several prominent lawyers and justices founded Manuel L. Quezon University School of Law in 1947.
Its two campuses (the Administration Building and the Monzon Hall) still stand today on Hidalgo Street in Quiapo, Manila. These two structures, along with San Sebastian Church to the west, are the commanding landmarks of this enclave of Manila’s Quiapo district.

He wanted to abolish the Senate and dragged the whole nation in a futile attempt at charter change last year. Now, he wants to run for the office he abhored.
Me thinks something is terribly wrong with his head. So, I searched the net and here is what I got. Please click here.

“Justice” Secretary Raul Gonzales has long been one of my personal pet peeves - even back when he was still an Iloilo Congressman trying to evict UP from its Iloilo City campus. Man’s man (ahh yes the beauty of hidden meanings
) that he is, Mon Tulfo admires Gonzales’ guts for voicing out his opinions on controversial issues like allowing the US custody of convicted rapist Lance Corporal Daniel Smith, but testicular fortitude is no excuse for being, at best, totally out of touch, and at worst, selling us out. But hey, that’s Tulfo for you.

Bobby Garcia (”Rent,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Dreamgirls,” “Beauty and the Beast”) is out of Hong Kong Disneyland where he used to be overall show director, and is now with Broadway Asia Entertainment. His first production with the NY-based outfit is Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “The King and I,” which will tour Asian cities with a largely Broadway cast plus seven or so Pinoy performers. Caught up with the director after he watched “ZsaZsa Zaturnnah” at the CCP (”It’s fun!”), and he also confirmed that Atlantis Productions will do the Tony-winning musical “Avenue Q” and the stage adaptation of Jessica Hagedorn’s “Dogeaters” in Manila this year.

Recently, a buddy of mine related to me a story going around in the entertainment business’ gay community. This tale is among the most celebrated in this community’s apocrypha, mind you. It stars a celebrity hairdresser and a respected dramatic actress’ man-child from her previous marriage with a bigshot veteran comedian. Now, for prudence’s sake, let’s call the mother DB, the son OBS, his comedian father VS, and the hairdresser Mr. Queer. The tale goes thus:
Here in Istanbul, whenever I go out, I would always encounter people asking me if I was Japanese. Taxi drivers would always say “Nerede geliyorsun? Japonya?” (Where do you come from? Japan?) This question really baffles me because I don’t look Japanese at all. My skin is brown. My hair is black. I don’t have chinky eyes and in my opinion I look very much like a normal Filipina. I would politely say I am Filipino and they would then think I am Korean! How could I look Korean if I don’t even look Japanese at all?
