Weblog Awards

Monday
Nov 27,2006

The extended nominations for the Weblog Awards 2006 closed yesterday. Voting will commence first week of December.

Weblog awards
This is the world’s largest blog competition with over 1 million votes cast in the last three years for nearly 1,000 blogs.

I was surprised not many Pinoy blogs were nominated, particularly for the Best Asian category.

I entered mine just for fun and experience. I know plenty of Filipino blogs deserve to be in the list. One can find them at pinoyblog.com

Pricewatch, Nov. 27

Monday
Nov 27,2006

I really do not know how the government define “stable prices” to try to calm our nerves for the holiday shopping.

I see so many changes in the prices in our local market. For instance, here are the changes last week and two months ago:

A Gay Womanizer

Monday
Nov 27,2006

Now going back to my friend’s smart-ass idea on Rizal being gay, he did presented some reasons to back it up. He started by making this observation; “Sa lahat ng babaero, siya[Rizal] lang ang hindi nagkaroon ng maraming anak.” “Of all the womanizers, Rizal is the only one who has not produced a number of children.”

True, Rizal did not have many children save for the one that Josephine delievered too early into this world, only to die later as a tragic consequence of Pepe’s misdemeanors. This is despite the fact that he is well known for having many lovers and flames everywhere he went.

Manila Cathedral_senor enrique

This is Intramuros about 6:30 in the morning. My workshop doesn’t start until 9:00 o’clock but I wanted to get here early this Saturday morning so I can take some pictures just before this part of the city begins its usual grind.

Next Sunday, the first Sunday of December, this place is going to be aglow with a procession of about a hundred carrozas. They are illuminated floats of Marian images from all over the country in celebration of the Immaculate Conception — Cofradia de Intramuros Grand Marian Festival. The floats will start gathering at around 3:00 pm at Plaza de Roma; hence, the entire Intramuros will be closed to vehicular traffic at 2:00 pm.

And later that evening at 7:00 o’clock, at the Manila Cathedral will be the gala performance by Belgian artist Luc Ponet on the newly restored organ with the Manila Symphony Orchestra. It is open to the public and free.

It should be a wonderful evening next Sunday in the walled city so join the festivities and bring your camera with you.

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR

Monday
Nov 27,2006

Question of the Day: Why should cousins — even fake ones — NEVER date?
Answer: Because they will inevitably bump into each other at family events. Literally.

Sports Telly

Monday
Nov 27,2006

Here in Turkey, football is the game to watch. It will always be a source of conversation and more often than not, you will find out that each person is a supporter of one team. The rivals in the national league are Fenerbahce and Galatasaray (or G-Bom as they are called). As expected my husband is a big supporter of Fenerbahce and would always watch all the games on the telly.

Philippe is–was–Philippe Noiret, the rumpled, crusty French actor who died of cancer last November 24 in Paris, at 76 years old.

Mr. Noiret became one of my favorite film actors after I saw his performance as the illiterate movie projectionist in Giuseppe Tornatore’s “Cinema Paradiso.” (That’s him in the photo, with Salvatore Cascio as the young boy Toto, who’d grow up to be the gorgeous Marco Leonardi in the film.) I caught the movie on TV in 1992, shown as part of a Holy Week special–no idea why–and fell in love with it unreservedly. Now, ask me a rundown of the movies I am most fond of and this 1989 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film tops my list.

Pics from the Annual Dinner & Dance. The theme was Masquerade. Felt like the belle of the ball, it’s the gown or I’m just naturally full of myself. My gown was rented (though I wish I owned one just like that..)

Noli and Fili
After my last post announcing the arrival of the rare first editions of “Noli and Fili” to the Philippines, now it is on Exhibit by Filipiniana.net for the España-Filipinas Tribuna this November 27-28, 2006 at the Grand Ballroom of Hyatt Hotel and Casino in Malate, Manila.

The exhibit will also showcase the world premier of a video-diorama of the Philippines-Spain 100 Years Ago. The film will shows an imagined dialogue between Philippine national hero Jose Rizal and eminent Spanish historian Wenceslao Retana, the representative thinkers of their generations. The second film portrays the historical reactions to the publication of Rizal’s two novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, which moved the Filipino nation to revolt against the Spanish colonial master.

This news caught my attention last week, finally I found time to write about it.

This is about the Temporary Restraining Order issued by the Supreme Court prohibiting the Govt. thru the Department of Health from implementing the Revised Implementing Rules and Regulations (RIRR) of the Milk Code.

In a nutshell, the RIRR would have

  1. Promote Breastfeeding with force
  2. Regulate the marketing of infant formula to children up to 3 years old.
  3. Require milk companies to put up labels warning that their products “may” contain either “Enterobacter sakasakii” or “salmonella.” The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization earlier found that “intrinsic contamination of powdered infant formula sakasakii and salmonella is a cause of illness and infection.

Because of this, the Pharmaceutical and Health Care Association of the Philippines (PHAP) filed for TRO with the Supreme Court citing the amendments as unconstitutional. The Chamber of Commerce of the United States of America also wrote a letter to the President on similar issue.

Interestingly, Nestle Philippines, supported the drive by the Philippine Govt– This is CSR in action.

When emails of Angelica Panganiban’s alleged unedited calendar photos clogged my office inbox, I promised myself not to forward the email to anyone for the sake of spreading the atrocity. Even if I knew everyone’s gonna see it, anyway. And even if it’ll make my friends realize that I’ve got a more decent body than Angelica effin’ Panganiban.

Leaking those photos was just too much. So f*cking what if she said that it was her body in that calendar? It was hers to begin with, anyway—with the kind help of Adobe Photoshop. And even if she had denied that anything in those calendars was enhanced, what was she supposed to say? “Uhm, actually in real life I’m fat and my boobs have been having a lovers’ tiff ever since they started growing into enormous proportions”?

Daily Snap

Finally jumped on a Project 365 bandwagon. I thought it would be really fun to have something like a photo diary of anything that happened that will remind you of that day. I thought at first that it would be hard to maintain another blog but this would just be more on pictures and less the words. And just for this I made a very simple template. So head on to the Daily Snap Site at http://dailysnap.ironwulf.net :D

School Patrolling

Sunday

Here in Winnipeg, school buses are provided to children residing more than one kilometer from their school. For students who are walking to school, the School Division provides trained patrols to assist with students crossing at major intersections and those within the vicinity of the school.

A week after school started this Fall, the vice principal at my youngest son’s school sent a letter home to parents asking for adult school patrols. She was looking for a volunteer at the post that is just around the corner from our home. I had wanted to do some volunteer work for the school for quite some time now. And this was just the perfect one for me.

Davey, Ousted by the People

Remember when Erap was ousted by the help of a throng of texters in 2001?
Although a loose analogy, this also happened to Davey. He got the lowest votes from the people against Yeng, Ronnie and Rosita who undoubtedly have bigger fan bases. This is the first expulsion night wherein the public was given the sole reponsibility to save who they think deserves to stay in the Pinoy Dream Academy.

Last night, Davey sang an original composition “Spending My Life With You” requested by his girlfriend, Angie. I like the song. It’s radio-friendly. And the man can really sing!
Good luck Davey.

Sunday Reflections

Sunday
Nov 26,2006

This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Liturgical Year (B). Next Sunday will be the First Sunday of Advent, Year C. It’s not easy for us to relate to Christ as King because we have not had any form of monarchy for the past four or five hundred years. But it can teach us a thing or two about the future and about the present. (Read on.)
