Ubuntu

I got frustrated with XP so I decided to try Ubuntu. My brother in law Erwin, the first vmware certified professional in the Philippines, gave me a copy of Ubuntu 6.06. Ok naman ang Ubuntu, but it can be a bit frustrating if one isn’t that patient. Buti na lang may leanings ako to be a mental patient. Hehehe.

ribbon I have been wearing this white ribbon since yesterday and I will continue to wear it everyday for sixteen days as a sign of my protest against violence against women. By wearing the white ribbon, I’m joining the White Ribbon Campaign (WRC), a campaign which started in 1991 in Canada but is now being practiced every year all over the world. What is striking about the WRC is that it was actually started by a group of men who deplore acts of violence of men against women. Hmmm… it’s nice to know that there are some men who actually care about women and are even protesting against fellow men for deplorable acts.

While looking at my shirts drying in the sun one day, I thought it might be fun to experience what it’s like to have something custom-tailored these days.

Having lived in New York, I had grown accustomed to buying my clothes off the rack — be it at Macy’s, Barneys, Bloomingdale’s, and Bergdorf Goodman’s Men store. Unlike as a kid when my father took me along to his neighborhood tailor; while ordering a shirt or a pair of pants for himself, a pair of shorts would sometimes also be requested for me. And during my early teens, I would go to Divisoria or Central Market with my brothers and cousins to shop for fabrics, and then take them to the tailor to be made as shirts or pants.

Ready-to-wear clothing then was unexplored territory; even our corduroy and denim jeans were custom-made. Nowadays, it’s the other way around, boosted by designer labels, retails sales of local and imported RTW garments (including its knock-offs) remain strong; consequently forcing most tailors to close shop.

vheater

This is not an electric fan, it is a portable electric heater. I bought it this evening at London Drugs for $79 before taxes. Everyday its getting colder and at night it gets even colder with temperature ranging from -10 degrees Celsius or lower. I hope this will keep my pad warm this coming days and the winter season. I guess the heater here in the apartment is not working properly because even if it is turned to its higher temperature it does not heat up my place.

Personalized DNA? You can bet a monkey’s butt on it. Which is not really surprising when one would consider that we humans are among the most dispersed organisms in the planet. We inhabit almost every terrain on Earth and continue to expand our territories, often with harmful effects to other species.

This also justifies the difference between ethnic groups and help us understand how they adapted to their specific environments; e.g. Why Asians have a smaller body build compared to their European cousins and why our African brothers are more resistant to HIV infections compared to our South American cousins and so forth.

    Verbatim: Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo

    Menchu who?

Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo is not a household name in the Philippines, and that is a shame. This theater actress happens to be one of the most accomplished and versatile performers Philippine theater has ever produced, with a glittering resume that can easily surpass those of actresses of her generation on Broadway or the West End. How many of them, after all, can claim to have played Liesl of “The Sound of Music” as a 17-year-old and, 26 years later, Maria Von Trapp herself (in Rep’s ongoing revival of the Rodgers-Hammerstein musical at Onstage Greenbelt 1)?

In between those two generational bookends have been some of the greatest female roles in musical theater: Maria in “West Side Story,” Luisa in “The Fantasticks,” Johanna in “Sweeney Todd,” Eva Peron in “Evita,” Genevieve in “The Baker’s Wife,” Tuptim in “The King And I,” Guinevere in “Camelot,” Fantine in “Les Miserables,” Fosca in “Passion,” the Witch in “Into the Woods,” Aldonza/Dulcinea in “Man of La Mancha.”

For such breadth and virtuosity and the unfailing grace with which she continues to inform her art, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo is truly the “First Lady of Philippine Musical Theater.”
