it’s really funny how the discriminated often display the very same discriminatory attitude, that they’re supposedly very much against, back to their discriminators.
I have a confession to make — I sometimes wonder what it would be like to spend the night with gorgeous chicks. Most probably, I’d get tired stroking their warm bodies.
Getting a driver’s license here in Vancouver is very different from the Philippines. The agency that handles driver licensing here is ICBC or Insurance Corpoaration of British Columbia. Its very different from LTO coz there’s no “Buwaya” at ICBC. You don’t have to bribe a certain individual in the agency just to process your license unlike what we have in LTO.
I am going back to the Philippines on a holiday this coming sunday. As early as last week, I’ve been thinking of the things I would bring over here in Istanbul. My “must buy when you get to Manila” stuff. I am getting excited just thinking of the list.
I guess every expat, makes his list of things to buy back in their country of origin. It’s a way of bringing back a feel of home.
What do you bring when you go back home?
One book that made you laugh:
Pugad Baboy 17 – Brosia rules!!!
One book you have read more than once:
Das Kapital by Karl Marx (direct German to English translation) – my mind went numb for days upon my first chapters. I actually read it over 5 times, I knew I should’ve read Marx for beginners beforehand, oh well.
One book you would want on a desert island:
U.S. Army Survival Manual – Eric and I are on the ’same page.’
One book that made you cry:
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden – a beautiful book.
One book you wish had been written:
Bonifacio: Siya ba ay kilala ko? by Ed Aurelio Reyes – an excellent companion to Ambeth Ocampo’s “Rizal without the overcoat.”

When the Spaniards discovered that the land and climate of Ilocos is perfect for growing tobacco, they forced the people to plant only tobacco and no other crop. The sakadas were also forced to sell the tobacco leaves only to the Spanish government. This has lead to numerous resistance among the locals. There were also stories of untold abuses done by the authorities. For one hundred long years, 1781 until 1881, the tobacco monopoly existed in Ilocos. A period of dark history in Ilocandia.

Here’s something interesting… A website called Freenigma seeks to provide encryption for those who use free web-based emails (HotMail, GMail & Yahoo!Mail). It uses industry-standard encryption technologies and should provide some semblance of privacy for people stuck with using free email service.
It was my first time to wear a necktie to work last night. I like it! Why? Click here to satisfy your curiosity.
Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante are more than Pinoy champions. They are more than Filipino prides. And as seen in this photograph… they are indeed more than friends. Efren Reyes and Django Bustamante was recently seen together grabbing each others balls and being so happy and gay about it.
My lab partner and I fought over who would be first author on our paper. The authorship issue is now settled, but… can we still be good friends as before?
Ah, grad school…
So yeah, stories can be overblown with this quick-to-judge attitude. I see the Americans as more tolerant of other people. Diversity works here in the US. The Philippines, diversity is a weakness. That brings us to the tribal and regional debates again. Let’s leave that topic for now. Here, Americans bring equal treatment to gays, blacks, handicapped, elderly, women, ethnic minorities, and many others; in the Philippines, you are laughed at because you’re gay or black or black or handicapped or older or a woman or of ethnic miniroty. What a difference.
