Stupid Elevator

The building where my office is located is one of those old structures in makati that looks quite unique when you picture it amidst tall skyscrapers that seem to be made of all glass and steel. Packaged with it is a very very old elevator that travels to each floor at a speed of 1 min/floor (might be an exaggeration but you would agree if you had the chance to actually take a ride in it).

How to get hammered like an adult

It was day 2 of Toast 2006, the wine festival by Wine Depot, which was being held at the Rockwell Tent. Oberon asked me to accompany him to the event at the last minute and only because the friends he was supposed to go with bailed that morning. Given that I used to make fun of his fondness for wine, I really don’t blame him. “I don’t drink vinegar,” I replied everytime he’d ask me to a wine tasting.

Of course, I was just covering up for my lack of wine knowledge. When it comes to wine, I’m — how do I say this delicately — an utter moron. I’m not completely embarassing in restaurants, being able to pronounce Merlot and Shiraz and whatever fairly well, but that’s only because I’ve seen too many episodes of Frasier. My attitude towards wine is simple: if it’s yummy, I’ll drink it. So when confronted with a roomful of the best wines in town, all of them up for tasting, I .. well, you know.

Unfortunately, it was Oberon who got delightfully tipsy first. “AG, am I walking criss-cross already?” he asked, during our fourth lap around the room*. I was eloquent in my reply — “Mmmm..mumble.. mumble,” I said, my mouth full of feta cheese and grapes.

Sleepover

Well, actually not really. We had to work last night as usual. I cannot remember a time when I was so comfy at work that I wanted to have a blanket and a pillow with me. Too bad sleeping is not allowed during office hours. Hehe! But did have fun during the third day of our dress-down week. No stiff and uncomfortable work clothes and no painful high heels.

We were in our jammies/sleeping clothes.

Me And My Almuranas

A poem about love, passion, heartache and hope about a silly sili and the mighty almuranas.

Oh I love them spicy foods
Though I know it won’t do me no good
Especially when it’s hot and sunny
It’ll make you perspire oh my golly

Bicol Express! I want it hot!
Not like in the can where it’s full of crap
I want my chopped sili spread out evenly
By just thinking about it, it makes me hungry

Observations of a wedding guest

bridal bouquet

A few weeks ago, we were invited to a friend’s wedding. The bride (a family friend) and her fiance used to live here in Winnipeg but they both moved to Hawaii last year and were coming back here to get married.

The bride’s sister and the cousin, who are both my childhood friends and my kumares now, helped her plan the wedding through phone calls. It was the sister and the cousin who made all the arrangements, from the church venue, restaurant, invitations, cake, flowers and all the little details for the wedding. Because the bride and groom were arriving just one week before the date set for the wedding. I think that was so nice of her sister and her cousin. But that’s what family is for, right?

The First Time

Adolescent Period

When I was 4th year in high school way back 19kopong-kopong, I had two female classmates who were older than me and were married. Seventeen na ako noon at nasa stage ng adolescent transition to adulthood. Well, well, as we all know adolescent transition is often conceived of as a turbulent, rebellious period of hormonal flux, fluctuating moods, and sexual exploration. Hmm, sexual exploration, I had no chance to explore neither theoretically nor practically. Sa aming pamilya sex topic was taboo. At sa edad na seventeen ay hindi pa ako nagkaroon ng nobyo dahil sa super tindi ng aking takot na baka magulpi ng Papa ko. Ang naging information source ko about sex was my above mentioned classmates. Kapag nag-uusap ang dalawa, nandoon ako at ang iba ko pang mga ka-klase na katulad kong curious sa gilid nila at naki-usyuso.

One time, nung nag-usap na naman sila tungkol sa sex. I asked one of them kong ano ang kanilang naramdaman noong una nilang maranasan ang sexual intecourse. One of them answered, super sakit daw ang unang penetration and that she was bleeding.

Then I asked another question:

Not another internet cafe in Makati

I visited the office of the only Filipino-owned VOIP provider in Makati. As I stepped out of the car, I was surprised. Oh an internet cafe cum office ! As I looked in, I liked what I saw.

An informal ambience of comfortable chairs, swings, gorilla nest and computers in the corner for internet use. continue reading?
