Gershwin, Anyone?

Saturday
Jul 29,2006

His music has become classic standards and no respectable jazz artist would be without a Gershwin in his repertoire. Balladeers from Frank Sinatra to Tony Bennet, as well as song stylists from George Michael to Rod Stewart had delved into the Gershwin catalog. And filmmakers like Woody Allen had used Gershwin’s orchestral work as soundtrack to his film Manhattan.

His songs — such as ‘S Wonderful, Our Love Is Here To Stay, Someone To Watch Over Me, Nice Work If You Can Get It, and But Not For Me — will remain forever etched in most music lovers’ hearts.

Why can’t we bring ‘em home?

Saturday

It’s the classic manana habit once more. Or it could have been something nastier.

With all the killings and bombings in Lebanon, I would have thought that the Philippine government would move heaven and earth to bring home our overseas Filipinos in that war-torn country. No country in the world, even if it’s ruled by a blood-thirsty dictator (no innuendos intended), can bear seeing its own people die one by one in some senseless war in a faraway land. Thus I was surprised and aghast to see on TV images and scenes of our fellow Filipinos packed like sardines in some church-turned-refugee camp. Read more…

It may be as small as losing my crush on some guy and finding another one attractive or changing my “dream phone” from a Nokia 6230i to a Nokia 6233 or as huge as being open to other job opportunities. It’s a tough world out there.

I remembered one of those sayings: “If you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of this world.”

Suddenly, a monk appeared in front of me barefooted and dressed in his worn-out saffron robe. Without thinking twice, I took out a few riels to put in his begging bowl.
That night I slept soundly.

What are you doing with what you have been given?

This was the question posed to a huge group of business leaders when Dr. Rick Warren, New York Times best-selling author ofThe Purpose Driven Life, spoke to members of the Management Association of the Philippines early this week in Manila. My husband and I were blessed to be invited to hear him talk on “The Stewardship of Affluence and Influence” at the Makati Shangri-la Hotel. A few days earlier, Read more about my encounter with Dr Rick Warren here

Whenever I’m caught in the horns of a dilemma, the quotation above never fails to remind me that sometimes you have to totally drop a way of thinking that you’re familiar with, especially if things are beginning to be very difficult. More often than not, there is a more direct and elegant way to approach the same end. Read more
